I'm sitting here playing Halo Anniversary and it made me remember something I appreciate about the Halo games, it most cases the game will let me retrace my steps to the beginning of the level or chapter.
It's pretty cool the weapons, grenades health kits and so on all stay right where you left them.
I am playing on Legendary and it is so nice to be able to go back to a previous area and do ammo sweeps, trade out weapons to fight different enemies in the levels ahead or go back and pick up skulls and other collectable I may have missed is the midst of a firefight.
In Gears you always get some sort of cave in, locked door behind you or area you have to jump down to and can't climb back up.
In my opinion it also makes the game feel less linear even though you are going down corridors and such.

I agree, I like being able to backtrack instead of having to reply a level from the beginning.

You're forgetting that other wonderful thing Halo does for you when playing co-op.
You've back tracked all the way to get that sniper rifle you were saving for a Hunter or high level Elite, then bamm!! Your partner drags you all the way to them before you pick it up.
I definitely like the idea but Gears always has those climactic cinematic moments within a chapter that mean you can't go back. Plus, I think having the right weapons feels much more vital in Halo. Gears usually gives you the right weapon for the right job just before you'll need it. Remember the amount of Scorchers lying about just before you meet the Sires in Gears 2, or the Longshots scattered about next to the Oneshot during the 2nd Act of Gears 3, when you need to take out the Locust before they blow the horns to alert everyone.

That is very true. That is also something that has always annoyed me about Gears campaign. It never feels like survival. It's "Oh look there's a sniping weapon - meaning you're going to be facing key targets from a range". Gears just kinda hands you the win.
What they should do is pretty much what he suggested. Allow you to backtrack to get a more ideal weapon for the fight ahead.
Example: You're going into a wide open area where theirs roofs overlooking where you need to cross.
You see some Boltoks and Hammerbursts laying around dead Locust.
They gave you what you need - but not the ideal weapons -- but wait a few blocks back you found a dead Gear in the middle of a hallway with a Longshot and thought to never pick it up since you were in Close Quarter areas.
Would reward the player who will backtrack and remember that as he now has a much better weapon for the area up ahead.
It simply rewards players who think.

This exactly.
There is no real element of surprise, I approach an area and I see several hammer of Dawn scattered about, I know I will be fighting a Brumak or Corpser soon.
The other thing this adds is strategy and it makes me think, I have to conserve ammo and not just spray and pray, I have to use the right weapon at the right time.
It also adds it own toughness to actually earning the Achievements.
Right now I am working on the Achievement where I have to have 4 rounds left in my sniper rifle at the end of the level, so I know I can't just make it easy on myself and use the sniper rifle, I have to pick and choose which targets I'm going to use my rounds on because I have no idea if there are more ahead an how long the level is going to last me, I have 7 rounds right now so I'm not going to use it any longer, this adds challenge and strategy because now I have to find a different way to take out those 4 brutes on the screen and I've limited myself to one weapon now.
