View Full Version : Judgement's graphics.... too cartoony?

Am I the only one who thinks the graphics downgraded big time on this game and look like it's from a comic book? Please post your opinions on the matter. Do you think they're worse or better?

Doesn't look cartoony to me. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwW7IsS-bN8)

I know what you mean. The style of Overrun is very 'Arcade'. I personally don't mind that too much, but I hope regular MP is a little less saturated with colour (which it won't be since we're unlikely to see things like tac grenades etc. which really pump up the colour).

Apparently not being desaturated and filled with brown and grey makes Gears games cartoony. SMH

I know what he means though.

Things like the Gears 3 tac-com (and subsequently the tac grenades) do saturate and give the game unnatural colour.

While I rather enjoy that change, and think it looks clean and fresh, likening it to a cartoon is not far from reality, and others may not like it.

I understand people not liking the brighter look, but calling it cartoony just seems silly to me.

This whole thing has been going on since the first screens of Gears 2 were released. People said that was cartoony. Then when Gears 3 was first shown it was called cartoony and suddenly Gears 2 wasn't. It's all pretty ridiculous IMO.

Not really cartoony. Having more then just grey and brown is a good thing and its just MP.

No really. Look at Gears 3 graphics. They're more detailed and look more real. The character models, buildings, environment, and everything. GoW: Judgement looks like a arcade game. I've been watching gameplay of GoW: Judgement and I've been playing GoW 3 all this morning. It's just... different.

We've only seen a few trailers and like one or two videos of gameplay.

I'm sure they might change some of the appearances of characters or items etc.

So long as they don't use cell shading it'll be fine.

Joey Lane

I took that into consideration too. Most games do update their graphics and models from the demos and betas before the actual release.
But anyways, here's a comparison..

This. It's way too early to say what the graphics are really like, we've only seen a few minutes at most of footage, of a game still in development. Most speculation about the game, and not just about its graphics are a bit redundant at this early stage.

^ this ^

But I do miss the old desaturated monotone. Made things eerie. The sky being that hazed grey look instead of blue added to the feel of GoW1. Aesthetics > Graphics.

Adding more grey and brown is most certainly not the way forward... it's the way backwards for game... It's seems every recent game has the same set of colours. The bloke who brought this to my attention was Yahtzee from Zero Puncuation and its amazing how right he was!

Colour is a good thing and this game looks brilliant to me!

Game is still a long ways out, we saw a demo, and nothing about it is cartoony.

The colors that were in the previous gears were perfect though. The whole reason for them was because it fit the mood and feeling of the game. It fit the setting as well. I mean, all of Sera was purged into war and the cities were left scarred by war and were in ruin. Would you really expect the skies that would be polluted with so much dust, smoke, and debris to be a pretty blue? No, you'd expect to be a bluish-gray tint. Same with the environment. It'd be scarred by battles... And don't forget all the hammer strikes. Then again, all those tie into the story which most don't even care about so I guess all this explanation is pointless.

I think the graphics are nice, not cartoony like Adventure Time, which i can mention cause John Dimaggio's on it :P haha. But I think Gears 3 did have a really good blend, when they went dark, it felt like Gears 1 soo much, but you could show off the Unreal Engine without ruining the series in the game, i think they're having to change the graphics for a demo, like the Gears 3 beta.

OP has a point , I think. Overall graphics look the same , however the wall markings, ie the big yellow hands indicating a wall can be climbed do look a bit cartoony.

I was told at E3, that they were there to help people understand that they could go up there. I'm guessing they could get rid of them in the retail.

That makes 2 of us. It doesn't look cartoony, but it does look "Arcade" Like a Namco game from back in the day. hahaha *Don't hate!!

It is only in development though. It can look completely different when it comes out. I mean the GoW Beta looked really different when compared to the game. That was in about 3 months as well.

I doubt they'll switch over to cell shading for no reason, and the art style hasn't changed much so it'll be like Gears 3 mainly.

Reminds me of the dark comic book feel of the first title. Which I loved.

Ok, so yeah. I watched more. It's good graphics, but at some points the colors and textures are just.... animai-like. The girl's hair for instance is a shiny red color and it doesn't look natural. I'm not hating on the game neither, I'm gonna' get it whether it has cartoonish graphics or not. It's still Gears! But idk, I just loved the graphic-scheme and style in the previous 3 gears.

I think you are panicking too much. I mean it is still almost a year before release. A lot can change. The colour scheme looks great. Some things will look of par, but then again it is basically a demo.

Its too early to pass judgement, some may, some may not look cartoony right now to someones eye ( I see a few here and there, but it is just a demo. We have a long way to go before release, I mean you do know they are still working on the game. Plus visual comparisons are a personal view, some people may see things others don't.

Keep it friendly. This topic in no way is meant to be offensive or bash the greatest game franchise ever made. It's for personal opinions.

GoWJ doesn't have the post processing filter thrown on it yet which makes a significant change in looks.
Notice in GoW3 you have that grainy image? That's a filter overlay on your screen. GoW3 would look identical to the shots posted if it didn't have that.

In some of the brighter areas that I saw in the gamplay footage the game did seem to look a bit cartoony but it was really just with the character models. Everything seems to look ok in the darker screenshots.

I get what the OP is saying (I think lol). The first installment had many elements of a survival horror. The second installment had less. By the third installment, there were very few elements of survival horror. Could it have been the brighter, colorful graphics that made it less scary? Possibly. Judgment will be the judge of that I suppose. Can they pull off bright graphics with heart-racing moments?

this. adding more color does not make it cartoony

Some people are artists. Others are not. No matter how hard you try to explain the difference in art direction, the lack of edge, people like this poster will not be able to wrap their heads around it. I have come to understand that after being on this forum for years.

That said, I appreciate this thread, and I hope that those in charge see these posts from those that care. Maybe someday, years down the road, Epic will rediscover the gem they created in Gears 1, combining state of the art tech with bleeding edge art direction for the cinematic game of its time, maybe the decade.

Whenever I see a thread like this, I want to start beating my head against the keyboard to stop the pain.

I don't even think people understand what they mean when they throw around the term "cartoony".

The game looks good. Let's leave it at that.
