View Full Version : Alternate "CTF" Game Mode idea

Everyone loves Capture the Flag. Great game as kids, great game in video games.
Flag though, do not represent anything in Gears. Nobody cares about flags. The Locust don't even have one.
What if the flag was more crucial? Not a person or a leader. We've tried those types. What about something that is a matter of life and death for both Humans and Locust?
I am speaking, of ammo. Specifically ammo crates. The crate would be picked up and can be dropped at will. No weapons can be used, and you can roadie run at 50% speed. You would susceptible to damage from all sides.
Rules:
Must Capture 3 ammo crates per round.
2 Rounds
5-10 second respawn
Spawns would be setup as static locations. No swapping spawn points.
Crates would be in static spawns and must be returned to your own spawn point.
Crates can be "walked back" to your spawn point, or can be defended for 30 seconds to return it to your spawn point.
Like it? Hate it? Suggestions?

I'm on board with any form of CTF type variant. I like this though, when you say "walked" d'you mean like 2 people in a team carrying the one crate like in Gears 2? If so I like that idea. It'd promote teamwork.

I was thinking it could be a two man system, but the "walked back" meant that if you stop the crate, you could grab it and run back to your spawn to protect it more.

Never understood why Gears doesn't just have a normal CtF gametype. All this business of 'get the AI bot to the zone' and lolCapturetheLeader isn't that great. Didn't Unreal Tournament used to have a CtF gametype? There's nothing wrong with the simple stuff; Gears 3 even got a TDM gametype. I'd gladly take a Capture the Flag mode in Judgement.
As for your ammo crate thing? Why? Just have flags... who cares if the Locust don't use them. It's multiplayer and there's no point in trying to be 'alternative' by making it Capture the Ammo-Box-That-Doesn't-Give-Out-Ammo.

Nothing in multiplayer fits in with survival and war very well.

There's no essence of realism that needs to be satisfied in multiplayer. Four Marcuses on COG; 5 Myrrahs on the Locust? No need to make them ammo crates for the sake of it fitting in. Besides, flags give a clear indication of which team owns them. Ammo crates are kinda' generic in design.

I game for CTF mode. I would like it to actually have flags though. Just b/c it's multiplayer and it doesn't really need to make sense. Have 2 flags that look like the one on the cover, one red and one blue. Person carrying the flag run normal speed, just can't use a weapon.
The ammo crate thing isn't a bad idea though. It's probably more likely to make it in the game too.

In your OP, you talk about defending it for 30 sec to have it auto-capture.
-I think this would be too easy.
I think that if you protect it for 30 sec, something should help transport it back.
-said thing would pick up the crate, and carry it back, while you protect it
--this would help you team, (5 people protecting instead of 4) and be more difficult than just holding the spot and auto-capping
I think it should be:
Idea 1: (trying to think of 2 similar shaped things)
CoG: Jack comes to carry it back
Locust: Kryll Cloud maybe
Idea 1: (trying to think of 2 humanoid things)
CoG: Onyx Guard in Silverback carries it back
Locust: Skorge or RAAM (full size) come and carry it back

eh no need to make it so gimmicky, i think we get it at this point epic wants gears to be different but just make it something to capture that fits in the universe

I've always enjoyed these sort of gametypes and would like something like that in gears besides guarding a weapon spawn,or capturing an actual person or AI.

I said it before and I'll say it now, CTF would not work in Gears gameplay. Maps are way too small and have too many chokepoints, spawns are much too easy to camp, and CTL has made it clear that if you have an objective that leads away from combat it becomes too imbalanced. Once one team pushes the other back into spawn they are almost guaranteed a capture/win outside of extreme circumstances.
I would rather a bomb gametype, as carrying something into enemy territory is a lot more action driven and strategic than carrying something away from enemy territory. Even then the bomb mode would have to be neutral in some way (1 bomb each team, central bomb plant spot) for it to work.

I like your idea Tao. I was playing GOW2 a few days ago and thought "This would be interesting as a game mode"
Times are changing my friend. I'm thinking the majority will probably not play it due to the fact that you actually have to try being decent at the game. Now it's about quick easy kills and caring about K/D W/L * Long live the retro and ink

The only thing I'd change, is make the carrying like the bomb used to blow open the door in GoW2.
Two people works exactly the same (assuming it can be tweaked to not be so Goddamn hard to go straight T_T), but with one person you'd grab one end, and drag it. You don't NEED to work as a team to win, but it sure helps.

I would love this Idea
CAPTURE THE RESONATOR
both spawns get a resonator instead of flags, grabbing one moves you at heavy weapon speed but you can have your pistol out, works just like Unreal CTF 3 rounds wins and your team must have resonator in base to score a point
This would work well with the story as resonator worked to map tunnels for COG, and it could be used by locust to get better tunnel data for faster E holes

I was thinking map specific for this reason.

That's what i was thinking. Two people to carry it faster with pistols only, or one could drag it with pistols, or could move slightly faster but have no weapon if solo.

I like the idea of a CTF game but not sure the ammo crates have the appeal.
Maybe each side could be retrieving parts for a hammer of dawn type super weapon and once a certain number of "flags" were captured, the game team had access to the super weapon to obliterate the enemy

I do like this idea but I think the bomb game type would be a better fit. Like RoboSeal1 said, there can be a Resonator on the map and it needs to be set off to win. It fits better in the Gears Universe.
If the maps to fit Overrun are gonna be as big as I think they are then maybe a bomb game type could exist in GoWJ.
