Let's celebrate this anniversary of the release of the legendary masterpiece that is the original Unreal.
It did not only impress the gamership with its beautiful visuals thanks to the very first Unreal Engine, but it was also a very atmospheric survival first person shooter with a fast pace and huge environments, a big variety of themes, stunning music, creative weapons with two up to three firemodes, scary enemies and it had a great modding community.
Well, was? Had? No, it still is just as great as back then, even though the visuals are quite old looking these days. Its modding community is still working on great projects and does its best to keep the game alive after more than a decade! It even got a facelift over time with the S3TC texture pack, some are even remodelling its meshes, there is a mutator that adds a bumpmapping effect and it's being patched by the community even up to this day! What more can one expect from the modding community?
Not only just that, this game has a coop mode and a DM multiplayer (which was the base for Unreal Tournament) additionally to the regular single player mode and its multiplayer is even on par with UT's multiplayer now (quality-wise) - again, thanks to the modding community!
Many years have passed and there are still people enjoying this game, playing it every day, almost as if someone bound them to their PCs and ordered them to play it as if there was no tomorrow.
I guess nobody will be able to explain this "wonder" and its "magic" that influenced generations of gamers and games that have been released after.
As long as those, who played Unreal, live on, it will never be forgotten.
