Hey community after watching last nights Active Reload it got me thinking. Everyone agreed we don't need MLG to survive, we just have to get the funding from somewhere. Here is an idea that I would like to get some feedback.
Community Driven
Now I know we have Hypefestation and I watched both of them and loved them. The problem is people like CDN had to front the prize money. Its not just him, but people were paying out of pocket. What if we as a community do this.
1. Get twitch involved and follow in MLG's footsteps and make a 5$ PPV. I know Cream, Fallout, myself and alot of other people out there have great streaming computers and we could make something happen.
2. Make it a open registration $200 dollars a team.
3. Have the event somewhere neutral like Dallas. East, West, and Central could commute to this.
Say we got 32 teams thats 6400 dollars. Now lets add in even 500 people (shooting low) who pay to watch. That comes out too 2500. Also last night on Active Reload Cream and the guys were trying to get Epic to match what we put up. If that were to happen that comes out to 15-16k. If you make it even a 6k prize pool were top 4 get paid that leaves plenty for expensives.
Sorry if this was a waste of your time. Just got me thinking.

Good idea but mlg is established, thats why i would rather them pick up gears, hypefestation was insanely good, hats off to them.

Sounds like a good idea. I'd support it. Would be very hard to organize though. Best of luck.

I too would want MLG to pick it up but i think this community is strong enough to work without it. MLG picking gears up would be a huge bonus, but just because they dont the community shouldnt lose faith.

THere has been 4 pretty well established LANs without MLGs help. Granite I would like MLG. It would make things easier, but if the community pulls together i believe it can be done.

I don't see why Epic can't give up some cash and do a GearsConn. UE makes 100s of millions a year, surely they can't support the competitive side of the game a little bit better. That's not to say the haven't.

They were talking about that on Active Reload last night. If we got an event like this rocking im sure we would see Epics support.
Unfortunately I do not think you will ever see Epic actively endorsing an event. That is unless something drastically changes within the company.

I dont know about that. Petenub and Quinn have been very active with the competitive comunnity.

This is too much too fast.
You have to establish yourself.
Yes some people went out of pocket for hypefestation but it was also extremely popular with 11k+ at one point during infinity and the nsanes. This popularity could lead to more sponsors next time and a bigger event.

A PPV event isn't a good idea for us at this time. It wouldn't work and would just leave us with far less people watching then usual and hurt us more.

Supposedly I was told by a guy on these forums that Gears 3 wasnt picked up purely because of a lack of sponsorship in time for the season. Summit like that

Yeah i see were paper view could be bad, but what aboout no paper view but having it an open bracket?
I dont know about that. Petenub and Quinn have been very active with the competitive comunnity.
that is irrelevant though. Unless they want to put up some of their own money.

I can't show proof but that is the reason as far as i know from talking to people within MLG circle. GoW 3 will get its shot, i just don't see how it wouldn't.

There are a ton of gaming communities that survive without MLG. The problem, which is also a hurdle for MLG, is funding. I would say most leagues and tournament organizers pay out of pocket for mostly everything. Competitive gaming is not a profitable business, it is more like an expensive hobby. Even MLG doesn't bank a lot, and what they do bank is from advertisers and such. And IIRC they are a Time-Warner owned company, so they have a good financial backer that can support hem if needed. But I would say even MLG has to crunch and work for every dollar they spend.
The best way to fund stuff like this is advertisers and sponsors. Pay per view setups on twitch would just mean people get pushed away. Entry fees are a must, but that money should goto funding the event itself. Prize money should come from sponsors.
Edit: To be clear, I'm not saying MLG doesn't make a profit, its just not a lot. This type of stuff doesn't generate a lot of income, and I'd bet MLG makes enough to stay afloat and expand ever so slightly from year to year. Again, its more of an expensive hobby than a business.
