I am, having trouble making my material look in udk close to the way they look in max.

But when I import the FBx they look like this:

The material is a very simple sub-object material

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Materials in Max cannot be used just like that.

First of all, you need to use various texture based maps, images.
Second of all, a model is just a model. You need to import the textures and setup a material in UDK, then apply that to the model.
