View Full Version : Moving Competitive Gears Forward

On GoW Nation's forums, we've had numerous discussions regarding competitive Gears and what needs to be done to make it successful. And a number of good points have been brought up.
Competition by nature is competitive (derp). With that said, trash talking and hate mail is not a necessary element to keep competition alive. While I think some friendly trash talking is fine, the more aggressive hateful kind needs to be avoided and shunned. I've had a number of conversations with people on all kinds of forums, and it's very apparent that this kind of hateful attitude only puts off people who would otherwise be interested in joining the competitive community.
The solution is to be more respectful and thoughtful to other players. I'm not saying you need to be best friends and hug one another, but there does need to be an understanding that everyone has different viewpoints and opinions on almost every issue. In order for a community to grow, it needs to encourage discussion instead of attacking it.
This is in my opinion the biggest issue with competitive Gears at the moment. People like to focus only on themselves. It's about showing off, instead of helping others, and this needs to change.
The community also needs to work on creating content. This is things from videos to articles. Bring up important ideas and aspects of the game and the community as a whole. Get people interested and involved. People want to be apart of a community and support it, not sitting on the sidelines, being told they can't do anything.
Finally, players need to be more outgoing. Get yourself involved with other sites and communities and spread the competitive word. I keep bringing this up, but I love what Falloutt said; "People love competitive Gears of War, they just don't know it yet". Get out there and tell others about it! Every time you put yourself out there, you represent the community, you get people interested and involved.
With that said, these new forums are an awesome step forward for competitive Gears. We are extremely privileged to have such an active an interested company as Epic to help us with our dream. Take a quick moment to see where you stand. Can you be more respectful? Can you create content? Can you encourage others to join the competitive community? I'm not asking for an arm and a leg, just an attempt to set things right.
Here's to hoping for a 2012 MLG Gears.

I would love to see Gears 3 hit the pro circuit. I'd also love to be apart of that circuit, but unfortunately it's hard finding individuals with the same drive. Though I'm still doing my part to help competitive Gears grow. Like supporting the pro players on their streams and also friends of them who give them shout outs. I actually planned on doing a commentary on this subject sometime soon and you've helped me move forward with it with a few ideas. Well said.
I'm just going to do my best encouraging everyone to do their part to the best of my abilities while still doing my own also to the best of my abilities.

Honestly just stay active, you'd be surprised how far you can go just being helpful and chatty with other Gears players.
Falloutt can tell you himself, I was brand new to competitive Gears ten months ago, now I'm doing everything I can help the community out. Everyone who really works at it can make big things happen.

Yeah, I've actually talked to Falloutt over PM and I've got all of the respect in the world for him.
But I'm doing my best to stay active. I really wish I could be playing GB's day in and out, but don't even have an active team. So all I am doing right now is trying to help my youtube grow along with others and maybe someday I'll get a chance. Who knows. I'm just staying positive as it is.

Definitely, just keep meeting and playing with people. Finding a good team is really something you can't rush. It's a long process finding people who you can really connect and enjoy playing with.
One step at a time :).

I'm trying. I thought I had two teams for quite a while, but we never really made it past the first few matches. Sure we smashed in public, but competitive is different. We thought we'd win every single match, but once we started losing people got demoralized. But personally I think those losses make us better and I expect to lose a few before we could start living up to our full potential.

It's something that needs to built upon, no doubt. In my opinion the hardest part of being in a team is staying together even after taking a number of loses. You have to lose before you can win.
That's my mindset now and I'm definitely looking for like minded individuals.

Couldn't agree more. I'm honestly really suprised to see the community move like this in the short time these forums have been up. It feels like overnight, the whole community has changed for the better. It just really makes me love this game more and more <3

Good post, but if a lot of people from GoW Nation are going to start using these forums, they're going to find that their usual shenanigans won't be tolerated. The Epic forums are very well-moderated and arguments that include a lot of bashing/insulting and off-topic threads are quickly taken care of. As for everything else, I'm interested in seeing what these new sections of the forum bring to the competitive community and what it can inspire for those who are currently invested in it.

And it shouldn't be tolerated, I'm glad Epic will help to keep the poor attitude out. But regardless of if it stays in threads or not, people still need to make conscious choice to help. I think there's a number of good people in the competitive community, so I'm not to worried.
And I'm excited to see what comes out of these forums as well!

This is great opportunity seeing as this is the most active gears of war forum. The fact they added this competitive forums opens up a whole new realm of exposure so lets keep it clean and take advantage of this.

What few don't understand is that Scrims are used to get better and try to perfect certain strats. It's good to win but if you use them to get better then that is more important then winning. Personally my team (which consists of CLOSE friends in real life) always runs the same strats because we try to perfect and see how other teams react. Even if we lose, I feel we win because we now know what to do in certain situations.
But again I'm just glad epic has done this. It's a great way for players new to competitive gaming leagues to get active. Other forums do have some trolls which is a bad thing. Even though I know some of them and love them it does put away new people. Now we have moderators that can handle this
Cheers ;)

Alpha's almost perfect imo. Just take the SOS out completely and swap it for scorch+shield.
