My 40 bucks for my patriot USB 16gig drive, paid off!
I was playing split screen, my regular account and guest1 account helping friends get the zeta horde cheev.
on wave 10 my xbox game froze. I had to force shut down the xbox to return to find my rank reset.
I always play through my usb drive so I was hoping my game did not erase on my XB360 Hard drive.
It didn't!
I did lose 5 ranks from 71 to 66 but that isn't Sh@T to worry about, just damn glad I play with a back up of some sort!
I will say, if you play gears you better play with two storage area's and use one as a back up!!

Nice Link! will have to check it out!
I've been back up my Gears since I got reset in Gears 2, had my wings then got reset but really didn't care but learned to play with a USB drive from then on.
Not sure how you describe the process but it is very easy to back your stuff up.
Log in to gamertag, load game and then it ask you to choose your memory.
I normally choose Xbox HD first.
Then I sign out, load game and choose my USB drive in which I normally play through,
That way it's save on both drives. easy and takes less than a minute, but yes I did do it for a couple weeks! LOL
otherwise I wouldn't have lost anything do to a updated backup!

Oh yea, got to have a back up! Gears is known for this issue! but there is something we as players can do and that is to back up our progress!

Man! I feel for you and been there in Gears 2 with a reset!
use cloud or get a USB drive,
I use a USB drive, and have my gametag and saved games, plus my Gears 3 and DLC all on it so I can take it anywhere and play my saved games on any xbox.
I guess cloud lets you do this too? but for me I've been using usb memory for 6 months now since my gears 2 reset and I'm glad I least had my filed saved a couple weeks ago so that I only lost a little Rank and a little progress.

Please explain something to me, if you don't mind...
Your Xbox froze so you restarted it. You went on Gears, pushed start at the main menu, selected your USB drive as your storage device and then saw your rank had been reset to 1, correct?
What did you do after this to recover your progress? Did you go all the way back to the main menu, pushed start, selected your Xbox 360 drive and then it loaded up your previous rank, easy as that?
I'm confused as to what to do if one day I boot up Gears, push start and find my rank to be reset to 1. I need to know the exact steps I should follow to successfully recover my progress in the event that this happens.

About 20 minutes ago I started up a game of quick match TDM (first match after start up)...didn't show the Marcus loading screen just a black screen and then nothing. Waited 2 minutes (was in a party talking to a friend) then restarted the console....boom, level 100 > 1, all medals, ribbons and unlocks flatlined.
Thank god I updated my backup earlier today. I only lost 74 kills for my gnasher medal progress (which I need to unlock my my onyx again) and a few games for veteran/match winner. Never had this problem before today but earlier I had the same thing happen (black screen needing a reboot but without the reset) and then I froze again during the first 2 minutes of a match after restarting it.
@Threnody
If you find yourself reset (press start then find your back to level 1), exit out to the dashboard (make sure your connected to LIVE), then delete the player data file from your HDD...insert the USB device with your backup then restart the game. After you press start the game will ask which storage device you'd like to use... select your USB device, play one private match (you do not have to finish it...this will update the servers with your backup restoring your rank and progress). Then exit back out to the dashboard, start up the game again, this time select your HDD when it asks which storage device, again play one private match (this will write the new player data file on your HDD). This way both devices will have the data, and you won't have to worry if you reset again before creating a new backup. Exit to the dashboard and remove your USB device...done!
