View Full Version : [Spoiler] Thoughts On The Clayton Carmine/ Dom Santiago Issue & Game Story [Spoiler]

I'm going a little deep here in saying this, but so be it. This is how I filled in what the story doesn't blatantly say:

Every character in Gears has suffered a lot of loss. Dom, Marcus, Anya, Sam, and everyone else lost family, friends, what their lives were like pre-war. Marcus lost his mother, Carlos, his father, then Dom, then his father again. Clayton lost his brothers and the rest of his family. Everyone has lost people and things that can never be replaced, and they don't know if it's ever going to end. For all they know, that is how it will be for the rest of their lives. All the survivors have to live with the Hammer strikes and the things humans were responsible for as well as all the things that are consequences of war... I think there was enough loss in general, for everyone.

Referring specifically to Dom and Clayton: Dom wanted to die. Clayton didn't. It's a tribute to life and peace: Clayton fought to live and refused to be expendable (the tribute to life) and Dom found peace in death (a tribute to peace).

Referring to the Campaign Story: I think the way the story is it's the way it should be. These characters have been through all kinds of Hell. Maybe they're supposed to be not quite themselves because they've seen so much death- the deaths of millions of humans on a global scale weighs heavy on the heart, mind, and soul; the personal loss even more so. The way the characters interact, what they say and the way they say it... They're entire beings are weary. They're hanging on by threads. They go on because they have to, but the passion that fueled going on is burning out of them because they feel they've been abandoned and there is very little hope. All they've known is killing, salvaging, and surviving for such a long time it's no wonder they seem detached.

I don't know if it's accurate. Just saying that's what I think.

Anyone care to add what they think?

I think Clay Carmine was a large missed oppurtunity. In-game, he had zero, and I mean absolute zero character devolpment. We know NOTHING about him. His brothers aren't mentioned at all, aside from a MP line and his tattoo.

He had the oppurtunity to be a great character, avenging the loss of his brothers, but he fell so very flat on his helmeted face. Fail character.

Clay actually did mention Ben and Ant during the campaign, but only for a second. I forgot the chapter, but when you play as Cole you'll have to decide if you want to take the ground floor with Carmine or the top floor with Sam. Obviously, take the bottom route. When Clay battles the lambent, he'll say something like "This is for Anthony! And Benjamin!" to which Cole replies "Amen to that!".

I think Clayton definitely could've been developed more. I chalked it up to his reply to Sam when asked why he was so quiet: Someone has to be because of all Baird's blabbing (or something to that effect).

Because of this I fully expect either DLC chapters including Clay (hopefully playable) or a huge part of the next GOW game.

IF they decide to make another game I probably won't buy it. Unless they decide to actually fix the reset issue in the current, of course.

I was angry that Jace replaced Carmine in this GOW. Jace was there all the time, doing nothing, being an annoying and expendable waste of space. He only stated the obvious ("Ohhh polyps in a box! ooh the background is destroyed what a nice skybox.") while Carmine is the one with thousands of fans and that is where EPIC screwed up, they could have had the beloved Gear with cool quotes and dialogue or the gear no one wants. And what do they pick?

If you read Coalition's End you'd know little bit more about him. But yes, his game time was way too damn short. I think Rod & Cliff didn't get what they wanted, which was to see him die, and they were pissed that he lived, and might have not wanted him in the campaign a lot, because of that. I may be wrong though.

Yeah. Well, Gears 1, we didn't learn much about Anthony but at least we got an idea about him. Ben developed a lot in Gears 2...
But Clay didn't do much =/
But I love his "Jeez louise, what the ****!?"

Epic screwed up by changing the writer of the story. BIG TIME!
Whatever her name is (can't remember it), she obviously had a wrong list of priorities when writing the story and the ending was just lazy and unexciting.

Yup. I share the feeling. Hoping for a DLC with Clayton. Maybe Clayton and Cole salvaging stuff in Azura while fighting off Stranded Pirates or even Locusts that survived the purge. It would be neat. Clayton and Cole are my favourite characters, after Dom.

Totally Agree. The first time i beat campaign i thought C. Carmine was very under developed. Most of the time i heard him speak, came off to me as awkward.

This is exactly right they two selfish pricks couldn't kill him off so they restricted his time in the game! Couldn't believe the amount of time Sam n Jace got in this game they where in it more than Cole n Baird!!!

Anyway I agree with this topic that Dom wanted to make peace with death and basically accept it he lost everything he was fighting and actually living for he had nothing left except Marcus! Was gutted Dom died :(

I hope there is dlc with more of Clay in it and hopefully Bernie after reading Jacintos Remnant I was hoping to see a lot of her in this game since she is the boomer lady

Jace and Sam were pointless and annoying. Wastes of space indeed brother. My only thoughts for the lack of Carmine, Baird and Cole - DLC? I don't know though. Wonder why EPIC ended up doing this, it definitely left me disappointed.
