I was hoping to be able to unlock the Onyx skin for the Lancer by getting 6000 kills.
Unfortunately, the acheivement is for multiplayer vs. only (excluding campaign, horde and beast mode).
Onyx Weapon Skin Unlock:
Rod Fergusson confirms to unlock the Onyx Weapon skin, you must play multiplayer only (excluding campaign, horde and beast mode).
@GearsViking Rod, quick question. Do the kills put toward to Onyx skins apply on in multiplayer or all game types?
-BlackZabest
@BlackZabest I’ve asked to be sure and they say MP only.

This is true? I mostly enjoy playing Horde with friends. Will this always be this way?

play private versus against casual bots with 10 seconds bleedout time.
they rarely execute you and you can get kills without dying.
if you make the rounds end quickly, you can boost that first strike ribbon too.

Its stuff like this that take away the sence of pride once you unlock it. I have already unlocked my Retro LEGIT by KILLING OTHER PLAYERS and not bot farming like a noob.

Let people get the Onyx stuff the way they want to. It's their business, it's their unlockables, it's their choice.

I really think they should make horde count as well, I mean as people said you can do it with bots now at least with horde there playing the game!

I honestly doubt epic thought a bunch of noobs would farm 6000 bots for a skin. Never assume a noob doesnt have that much free time and lack of skill.
Horde should count private should not.

I sort of wish horde kills counted, but idk that would make it too easy. I haven't bot farmed to get anything but I'm not against it either. If you do it legit, good for you, if you farm, who cares?

Personally, I would like Horde kills to count, rather than killing bots.
Thanks for the tip, 00629. Much appreciated.

Frankly I Think if horde was added people wouldn't farm for it, just as it is now people not to crazy over gears VS have to.

Is this the right place to request that this be changed?
The bonus of only counting multiplayer is that people will be playing this game for a long time! I'm glad they did it... now in two years we won't be having ridiculous problems finding matches because people will still be going for their Onyx medals and Seriously 3.0.
It's not supposed to be quick :)
If they included Horde kills, it'd have to be at least 20,000 kills per weapon to get their Onyx medal, in my opinion.

It's foolish to think anyone stay dedicated to a game for a skin, when other game can offer better thing faster and more enjoyable, what keep a game a life is content flow. As well people lose interest rather quickly the more distant the target, so no the idea of 20,000 kills in horde is just as foolish a thought it fair all around as it is 6,000 kills PER WEAPON no one will be getting that fast even with horde.
And as stated, you can do a horde Lite right now with bots and KOTH to rank up kills for the skin.
Overall not adding horde is not helping it if anything it hurting it, with horde people wouldn't bot and still play the game or at the least bot less.

You got a vid of all of your kills to back that up? Leave them be, if they want to boost let them boost. Someone could boost and lie to others by saying that they got it "legitly."

I agree. Why would you care how they got it? Unless you're Jelly I guess. Just go on your own and achieve it for yourself.

I dont see why they dont let Horde kills count. I could care less about playing the actual online multiplayer of this game. I just prefer Campaign, Beast, and Horde. And honestly, it's a skin. Let people play the game the way they want and let them unlock everything the way they want.

Yeah because there's so much pride in killing with the same gun 6,000 times. There's no pride in investing time when you didn't build anything physical.

That would be fine. I am not going to play multiplayer or farm bots, so whatever they feel they need to do to include Onyx skins as a Horde kills acheivement.
I would go with 10,000 kills, but then I have 4 kids and 20,000 just isn't reasonable for me. After however many years I just barely hit 20,000 kills with all weapons combined in Gears 2.
It seems reasonable to have a performance based incentives for casual (horde) players. When I thought that I was working toward the Onyx skins I was more excited to play.

@AHal: So... by two years, you mean... what? It should take me two years of playing for a minimum of three or four hours every day to unlock everything? If so... do you actually read what you write? Because I'm sorry, but that would be a completely ridiculous requirement. Gears of War is a third-person action shooter... NOT an MMO. I shouldn't need to waste full months of my life just to unlock a couple in-game items. Especially when there is so little replay value - I've only had the game for a week, and I am bored. Part of that is because they foolishly decided to release it at the start of the fall semester, and most of my friends and I are all busy with college, so we haven't had opportunity to work on the various co-op options. Further, I don't care at all about my rank on leaderboards; I just play to have fun. Granted, yes, achievements and unlockables do help encourage me to keep playing... if they're reasonable. But 6,000 kills with each starting weapon? 3,000 matches in each game type? Ludicrous numbers of spots and assists? All of which can only be done in Versus? That's not an incentive for me to keep playing; that's an incentive not to waste my time being bothered, especially when there's still so many more great looking games coming up this fall.
Further, Horde was one of my favorite things about Gears 2; I couldn't tell you how many times we got a bunch of people together in one place, set up a system link game, and went at it; it was great! Horde 2.0, though..? It's fun... but looking at the stats, it feels to me like they want to make this "just another competitive shooter" since so much of the focus is on Versus.
It's pretty obvious to me they've shot Horde 2.0 in the foot; a lot of players clearly preferred Horde, but now that almost nothing you do there counts, there's very little incentive to keep playing. Unless something is done about the stats, a lot of people are going to drift away once more interesting games come out. And I don't just mean the "casual gamers" or the CoD fanboys, either.

do ppl that farm for this really ruin your life? i didn't think so, so what does it matter? you want to boast that you got 6000 kills by playing multiplayer.....yea, you are definitely cooler than i am.

That's why you will only see the most hardcore, dedicated players with the Seriously 3.0 achievement. It takes time and dedication. If you are the type of player that likes to be done games quickly, that is totally fine - you just won't get the achievement that takes longer to get. It's not an insult I am trying to make, I'm simply saying that if completing a game isn't important to you, it shouldn't matter. At the same time, if completing a game is important to you, and you enjoy the game, you shouldn't mind putting in the time because you'll be enjoying it along the way. If you don't enjoy playing it or get bored of it after a while, that is simply your own choice. You don't have to play it continually; you can play other games and come back for more and continue working towards it. It adds what I like to see in every game which a lot of games these days lack: replay value.
And in regards to your statement on Spots and Assists - they really don't take long. Seeing as how every time you spot somebody the next time they're killed you get an assist, it's like getting two medals in one. Just spot every player you see and it'll add up quicker than you think.
This is also just my opinion, keep that in mind. If you feel it takes too long that's just fine as you are entitled to an opinion as well - I am just saying that I'm glad it will take a long time to complete because it should keep some players around for a long time. For a while, Gears 2 went pretty dead because a lot of people had finished it. Hopefully the completion factor in Gears 3 will keep players coming back. That's all I'm saying.
Cheers

Fastest Way:
CheckOut
King of the Hill
15 Rounds
9 Casual Bots
Put Lancers everywhere
5 second bleedout
Now to the people that say this is boosting: The bots are fighting back, they are trying to kill you. They will kill you often. Boosting would be having all 5 players on the other team run to 1 spot every life just for the person on the other team to get the kills. The way I explained above is legit IMO.
The way I see it, there is two ways to earn the Onyx skins:
Playing Online: Using cover, the intense rifle battles, teamwork, but a very very very slow way to unlock what you want.
Playing Private: It's the fastest way to get what you want. It's just that you can't have the fun of playing online and get kills and show off weapon skins and what not.
