What do you think most shows how skillful a person is in Gears of War?
To me I think its team work. You dont get put on a team of 4 other people to work by yourself.

I believe it's teamwork, the ability to improvise if the initial plan fails and being able to capitalize on mistakes. That to me shows the true skill of a player.

This gets asked in a lot of games and honestly, I don't think a single stat will ever show a players actual skill because the "skill" needed can vary match to match.

A high K/D doesn't mean anything because you may be going solo against scrubs and leaving your team out to dry.

A high winning percentage is great but it also means you could just be on a great squad of 5 which will always have an advantage over a better player on a poor team.

I think the best type of player is the type that will adapt to the situations as they arrive. If you need them to go clutch and win a round, they do it. If you need them to hang back and protect your leader so he doesn't get captured, they do it. If you need him to simply stay alive and cover spawn so the rest of the team can spawn safely, they do it. Etc.......... In short, I would say it's the player who is not only skilled, but has a high level of awareness and does what's necessary for the team.

That pretty much sums up what I was about to say. :p
I agree, I hate judging someone's skill over a single match, but it's habit.

Adaptability is defiantly a good trait. I look for that and communication skills when I play any game.

i love teamwork and I don't mean to knock it...but if I was trying to assess how good a player is, I wouldn't really look at his teamwork. You can have a player who is a very good teammate but not all that good a player. Plus, to me the word "skill" refers to an individual, which makes using teamwork to define it kind of a paradox. Again, I LOVE teamwork and what's great about Gears is that 5 average skilled players working together can very often beat a team with better players on it...that's one reason I got sick of Halo, the game was almost always won by whoever had the best BR/DMR or Sniper skills. It got stupid.

As far as what I use to decide which INDIVIDUAL player is best...I use points per round. K/D I think doesn't really tell the full story. It's at least mildly accurate, but to me points per round is better.

Not much to add. That's pretty accurate. K/D means little as the person could be a kill stealer racking up 3 or 4 or more a round. Happens all the time to my downs. W/L could come down to connection. At least in previous Gears or as was mentioned, a good team. A bunch of average players playing as a team can beat a team of good players playing average and not as a team. Too many variables. If the guys connection speed sucks he's only going to do but so much. Not that he isn't a great player.
