View Full Version : VMWare fusion + Mac OSX
Hello,
I'm running VMWare Fusion 3.1 on my Mac with OSX 10.6.5.
I've installed the UDK on my virtual machine Windows XP SP2
Is there a solution to get it working?
loading with -log :
"Presizing for 0 objects not considered by GC, pre-allocatng 0 bytes"
"Object subsystem initialized"
"Last hardware survey: Ver=-1, Date= 0. Uploading again"
Thanks!

I've been trying for several days to get the December UDK beta to run as well, but have not been able to get it to load. If I just use the Start Menu shortcuts created during the install, my computer will churn for a little bit and then throw up a dialog saying an error has occurred and ask if I want to send the information to Microsoft. I'm trying to get this running on a virtual machine on my MacBook Pro and from what I've read, it should be possible. I'm just not having any luck with it… Here are some details:
Physical Machine
MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.5
2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M w/ 256 MB VRAM
VMWare Fusion v3.1.2 (332101)
Virtual Machine
Windows XP SP2
2.52 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB RAM
VMWare SVGA II Graphics Card - Driver version 11.6.0.35
Accelerated 3D Graphics enabled in VMWare Fusion
.Net 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2, 3.5 SP1
VMWare Tools
dxDiag shows DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904) and the Direct3D tests for 7, 8, and 9 all pass.
When I run the following command on the virtual machine:
C:\UDK\UDK-2010-12\Binaries\Win32>udk editor -log -dumpudksurvey
I get the following output:

I've been Google'ing everything I can think of, but have been unable to find a resolution to this. I did come across an older support thread that mentioned editing a .ini file to somehow skip the hardware survey, but the .ini section referenced in that post did not exist in the files on my computer.

Guys, OS X's EULA strictly forbids installing Apple's operating system on a non-Apple computer, which includes virtual machines... Even if you buy it legally. Whether Epic tolerates this, I do not know. Good luck!

I'm running VMWare on a MacBook Pro under OS X. Windows XP is the virtualized OS. Should be OK.

Oh, I jumped to conclusions from the topic's title, my bad. Yeah, Microsoft doesn't have any ransoms for their software as long as it is legal. :D

Has anyone gotten it to work successfully under virtualization? I would guess that it just wouldn't work that way and you'd have to use bootcamp

I have it working under fusion.
I tried Windows XP sp3 but the installation would fail, and couldnt figure out why. So now i got a Windows7 32bit vmware running.
but i must say its having a hard time.
I got a macbook pro 2,4ghz 4gb ram.
Set Graphic acceleration on and allocated 3gb of ram to it.
Really easy to do some quick stuff but I would recommend a bootcamp

I'm installing a vm with Windows 7 ultimate, but the UDK installer doesn't recognizes .NET framework 3.5.1 sp1 (included with Windows 7)
Do you have solved this?
Thanks

Windows automatically installed "microsoft chart controls for microsoft .net framework 3.5" before the udk install. If it's not in your program list maybe you should install it manually

Last time I tried, UDK ran in Parallels but not Fusion. That was the Dec 2009 release or something alike.
Thanks guys, I have installed VM with Windows 7 ultimate and it's working :)

You sure you can run UDK on 2.4Mhz that less than a calculator :p. Just kiddin.
But youre right bootcamp is faster. but virtual machines have their advantages to.

CSlegers have you been able to use UDK Remote with you iPhone? When I click on Mobile Preview (Play) I get some error. I'm only able to play on PC player.
Thanks!

I have used the UDK remote (make sure u use a bridged network connection and then use the ip of the virtual machine)
Have the same problem with the mobile previewer, haven't figured that one out yet but i think it has something to do with the Open GL ES2 (maybe its not supported)

This is hillarious. I spent days figuring out how to get mac OS X to run on my PC, which included installing VMWare for Windows.
Mac Users, you guys are out of luck. PC/Windows users win here because I found out OS X just works. It just works on a PC. You just need a mac bootdisk to load up the OS X installer (i used iBoot) and setting SATA controller setting to "AHCP" (or something like that) in the bios.
I'm running dual boot Windows 7 and OS X on my Core-i7 PC =)
P.S.- I won't get into a price debate either, which is another (historic) backbreaker for anyone using Mac$.
I'm unable to load Jazz Rabbit demo or Chicken coup. The UDK mobile compiles the shaders but I don't see the map and the app freezes.
Any help?
Thanks

you need a pretty powerful system to run windows and udk in vm. you need to virtualize 2+ cores to even get it to work without crashing, and even then it takes some beef to not run dog slow. its easier for me to boot into bootcamp win7 directly and have all my assets ready.
yes, I'm going to buy a big harddrive and install bootcamp + win7 64. :)

Hi guys, ign's post is from dec 2010, anyone had new succesfull experiences on using UDK on a Mac with a VM? Or is it still safer to use bootcamp?
Thanks !
I have a MacBook OS X 10.6, Am I missing something, but why can't you just set up a 30gb boot camp partition? I have win 7 set up and it runs perfect. I run UDK Febuary, with no issues.

The only problem with bootcamp is that you have to reboot (since I usually work under macos)... But I am also using bootcamp and UDK works perfectly.
Thanks
