What is Epic Citadel?

Epic Citadel is an application that showcases the technical capabilities of the award-winning Unreal Engine 3 on iOS devices.

In Epic Citadel, players navigate a fictional castle realm using simple and intuitive touch controls. It’s all about exploring the world, from the circus bazaar to the bridge overlooking the river to the mysterious cathedral at the center of town. Look around, navigate the area and enjoy the dazzling visuals.

Download it for free at http://itunes.apple.com/app/epic-citadel/id388888815

How do I move in Epic Citadel?

Tap the screen on the location to which you wish to move. You can tap a few feet in front of you or far ahead on the path.

You can also use the thumbsticks in the lower left and right corners of the screen to traverse the world. The left thumbstick controls movement while the right thumbstick controls your view.

Drag your finger across the screen to look in different directions. Check out the birds in the sky, the flying flags and banners, the individual shadows on leaves and trees, and even reflections on marble floors.

How long did it take to make Epic Citadel?

A small team of Epic’s programmers, artists and testers created “Epic Citadel” in just eight weeks of development time.

What are the technical features present in Epic Citadel?

Unreal Engine 3 for mobile gaming platforms is scalable yet packed with the same tools hundreds of thousands of users work with to create games, simulations and animated content.

- Amazing visuals. Epic Citadel pushes the envelope for stunning visuals on iOS devices. Through the latest advances in Unreal Engine 3 technology, the application delivers unrivaled graphics and special effects that immerse players in the kingdom’s grounds.

- Bump offset mapping. Also known as parallax mapping or relief mapping, bump offset mapping enhances the visual appearance of stone walls and rocks providing intricate textures.

- Normal mapped architecture. Brings stunning detail to bricks and ground surfaces within the environment.

- Texture blending with painted weight maps. Refines nuances on roads and terrain, making them rich and lifelike.

- Global illumination. Unreal Engine 3’s built-in global illumination system, Unreal Lightmass, provides realistic lighting and shadows with minimal development resources.

- Dynamic specular lighting with texture masks. Helps create authentic cobblestone roads and vivid reflective marble surfaces, while lens flares and light coronas add dramatic emphasis when panning across light sources.

- Real-time reflections and animation. Environment mapping enables real-time reflections on objects such as the statue inside the cathedral. Dynamic movements of trees and banners are made possible through the use of vertex deformation and skeletal animation.

- Free tools. Epic’s Unreal Development Kit (UDK), available for free download at www.udk.com/download (http://www.udk.com/download), ships with the same tools and technologies used to create “Epic Citadel.” Anyone can create games with UDK.

What should I do if I experience technical difficulties?

In the rare case that something hangs up or freezes, exit Epic Citadel and shut down the application from the Home screen of your iOS device. Restart the app by tapping the Epic Citadel Icon. If you are still experiencing performance issues, it may be time to cycle the power on your device.

OSX UDK would be great, but I guess there is no OSX support?

Do apply the same license agreements for mobile as for your other platforms?
Starting from $5000: 25% goes to epic on commercial Apps?
I guess 25% from revenue, not sales including Apples revenue? (would mean Devs get only 45%)
Since Apple introduced you, isn't there some kind special agreement?

I can't download Epic Citadel and desperately want to see the prettiness!
When I try to download, it says that
"This App is incompatible with this iPod touch. This app requires OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics capability."

I have a 3rd Gen touch with the latest OS.

Can anybody help please?!
Thanks

Does anyone know if iOS will become a deployment target for the UDK?

This would kill Unity3D

I also could not install the demo on my 3rd gen ipod. I didn't get the open GL message though. It just said that it was not compatible on my ipod. I noticed they added an updated version with notes that suggest they fixed compatability problems. I downloaded the 1.1 version of Epic Citadel, and that did not help.

I have a 16G touch with the latest iOS version 4.0.2

I"ll try rebooting again.

Hi folks, we haven't made any announcements about licensing structure but the execs have indicated (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/30223/Interview_Epics_Capps_On_Bringing_Hardcore_Flavor_ To_iOS.php) that it will be flexible (http://www.develop-online.net/news/35768/Epic-Multiple-licensing-deals-for-iPhone-engine).

The iOS code is not in the Unreal Development Kit but we highly encourage iOS developers to check out the tools by downloading UDK and then contacting us at licensing@epicgames.com when they're ready to discuss things further.

- I got some iOS test device, I think that you actually have a 2nd generation iPod touch. (Got this warning on 2nd Gen Device)
In fact, there is no 16GB 3rd Gen iTouch, the iTouch 3G was only available in 32 and 64GB.

- From Apple :

The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.
If you really have problem launching/downloading Epic Citadel, please report a bug to Apple and/or Epic.

The iOS code is not in the Unreal Development Kit but we highly encourage iOS developers to check out the tools by downloading UDK and then contacting us at licensing@epicgames.com when they're ready to discuss things further.
Ok !
Gonna check this out !

crowl, can you give us any information on UDK for Mac OSX (like: will there ever be one and when)? I don't know about others, but at the university I attended, at least half the students had macs. :) Thanks in advance!

So will we be able to use the UDK to create Iphone games such as Citadel or is this a paid license only?

Epic mobile is not part of the UDK at the moment. You can e-mail Epic and talk about licensing Epic Mobile, afaik mobile is part of the UnrealEngine3 deployment targets but not part of UDK.

So until/if UE3 Mobile becomes part of the UDK, it's licensing mode will be different. UDK has very specific licensing terms that may not work for mobile games that have a different price range.

Sad to know that udk and epic mobile will be different, i was looking forward to developing games for IOS too but i am pretty sure that those high licensing fees will keep me away form epic moblile.
Well until epic mobile becomes free to develop, I'll just stick with udk.
