I don't know either if it the right section and if it is legal at all time.

If it's not legal close or delete this topic at any time.

I was wondering, since UDK is a huge file for downloading and takes some time if UDK licence (the package downloaded from the site) could be shared via torrent or FTP. OBviously without violating the TOS.

My idea was in fact just to produce a sort of mirror (or a torrent) of UDK releases to be faster to download like Linux Distros does.

Thanks,
Mattias

I don't mean to derail the thread, but when I initially saw the title I thought you were talking about sharing UDK assets. I think one of the cool things about the UDK that isn't common among licencees of the Unreal engine is that everyone can be on the same version of the binary, meaning it's pretty easy to share packages and scripts. I keep wondering if we'll ever see a UDK resources portal pop up someplace. In terms of indie development and developers helping one another, sharing things like scripts for camera systems, new pawn types or ai controllers as well as modular material and mesh packs could be a huge boost to the UDK community. I know I plan on working towards making my assets as modular as possible, not just for my own ease of use, but so I can readily share them with other developers. We're here to make games, not remake that same concrete material for the Nth time :P

Actually I am working on a site for such a thing.
Its still in the infancy stages as I have just now put it up but please take the time to check it out and offer some input on it and I will do what it takes to make a place for everyone in the community to share assets , scripts or tutorials on in one spot.
The plan is to also have moderators/admins who will test everything and try to keep all the information and assets upto date.

Sites such this are always welcome! Right now it's a bit unfair any input on the site, since it's in its infant stage!

I had a very similar idea: hosting Unreal Tournament files (demos, or just sharing stuff freely). The main feature would be an infinite amount of sharing space per user. I even went so far as start working on a concept design for the website layout. I ended up getting quite busy. Wanna' see the design?

This was all done before the announcement of UDK, so if I planned on making it I might have to update the design to something more like UDK Infinity...or maybe not.

But back to the OP, I'll definitely share it via BitTorrent if I must. I'm very surprised there isn't an official torrent for it. No more paid mirrors and great speeds.

there is already a site set up for sharing stuff http://udkc.info/index.php?title=UDKC:Collections
just nobody seems to add anything to it?
maybe because you have to use an external link as you cant get space on their server, but there are tons of free file sharing sites around you could use to hold your assets
if you have something to share, please upload it somewhere and add a link to udkc
btw i would think it might be frowned upon by epic to torrent udk

Why? Blizzard uses the bittorrent protocol to share their updates. It is working beautifully and one great example of how to use the protocol for what it was really designed for. I share the UDK on a local torrent site setup for other developers to download from, since our international bandwidth comes at a premium and is unaffordable for most, I do my share in giving the UDK as much exposure as possible in our local economy. If I did not do this, fewer people would be able to download and use it.

If you distribute the UDK download (through bittorrent) as the exact file as provided by Epic (i.e. the installer) then I don't think they will mind a lot.
