From the makers of "Unreal Cascade - An Introduction and Application (http://forums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=705543)" comes a new tutorial video, "Unreal Development Kit - An Introduction and Application (http://eat3d.com/udk)".

This four hour video covers creating an entire environment (indoor and outdoor) from scratch. Sjoerd "Hourences" De Jong will help to guide you through the process. Sjoerd has been heavily involved in Unreal Tournament modding over the years and has recently released the game "The Ball (http://udk.com/showcase-the-ball.html)", created with UDK.

While I respect what Hourences is doing for the community, I don't see any justification to spend $55 for four hours of content.

Thanks for posting this Flak!!

It looks a very good tutorial and it will probably help a lot of new users. But it is one more tutorial that teachs the same thing.

Saying that, I will probably buy it.

We watched the 3dbuzz ones and gnomon dvd very carefully and they dont really show you the hows and whys on creating an entire level like Sjoerd does. They do a lot of technical explanation, but saying it isnt the same as watching someone like Sjoerd go through the process.

Strange you would say that, its not like anyone is getting rich, actually its a very humble return for the months of work we put into it. Would you say the same thing about his book? I haven't read it but others have found it to be an extremely valuable resource, and around the same price. I can understand being under hard financial times, but its hard to understand there being no justification for buying this DVD. We may be offering a streaming version in the near future that hopefully will appeal for those on a tighter budget.

Thanks everyone for the great comments, If this goes well we will definitely make a part2. :)

Will part2 be about unrealscript? I so, count with my money.

Rusty Sempsrott (the guy who made the kismet DVD) was interested in doing this but we just didnt know how many people would be interested. He said he still may do it, but its still kind of in the air.

Looks really interesting.great work

There are hardly any Unrealscript video tutorials on the web but plenty of Editor tutorials and all of them around the same beginner level.

So definitely i am interested in scripting VTM.

I would buy it. I'm kinda tired to wait for the mastering unrealscript book and video supporst is always better than a book.

I'll be buying this one, definitely. Mostly because of who made it, watching his workflow is something I'm very interested in.

Just discovered this and looks like a great vid! Thanks for the contribution. I would also love to see an UnrealScript video, particularly one that would demystify some of the various parts to creating a non UT-based game, such as an intro to PRI and replication in general, HUD and UIScenes, Cameras, etc.

Because sitting there and watching someone write code is going to be about as useful and interesting as watching paint dry. :)

does this video show you how to cook and package the game as a stand alone too? and also are there any video tutorials on this as well?

I am looking for someone who can help me turn this into a web variant by the way, and extend it. I have a number of ideas on how to build a kind of Unreal tools page, with all kinds of convertors and advanced tools. A web based Unreal array tool for example. If anyone feels like helping...:)

The DVD focuses on the editor. No cooking/packaging game things are covered. The workflow focuses solely on the work done inside the editor, using existing assets. I am using the typical GOW/UT3 method, using many different meshes and combining them in such way that you get something new. The puzzle method. The ability to see a building in a lot of seemingly unrelated chunks of geometry. It is the opposite of building a unique scene in a 3D modeling program and then porting the whole thing over to Unreal, another way of working.

So that, plus of course the basics on how to get started (even if you have never build a level before), plus my tips and tricks for building a scene like this are covered.

We are thinking about doing something more with "workflow" in the future, as it is something very few tutorials cover. If anyone has specific suggestions of workflow things they would like to see covered I would be happy to hear.

thats awesome.
i can only hope the DVD, is friendly paced.
yet how can it not be.. its Hourences whom already invested some heavy time in making very good to follow tutorials on UT.

ps:
but yeah no more polish sugar rush keyboard shortcut bunnies for me.. :)
no offense too polish people " its a compliment"

I'd actually be interested in an unrealscript or Kismet DVD, if it covers advanced stuff, not how to get a door/lift moving.
Creating an inventory with unrealscript and some cool scripts you could use in RPGs or in general in al types of game.

How to change most of the UI and a UIScene specific Kismet tutorial since it's sorta different from UT3 UIScene Kismet.

You can find basic stuff all over the place, I think it's time for more advanced stuff.
If people see they can actually learn something new, they will definitely buy it.

I don't see why I would buy the actual DVD since it's mostly about creativity, and if I know 1 thing: you can't teach anyone to be creative.

Showing someone how to use different meshes to get another one is, of course, cool. If the guy has no creativity though, all he ever will be able to do is to create that one result, and nothing else.

I know many will say it's the same with code, luckily for us, once you have some basic codes, you don't have to recreate a new one, you can use it in every type of game.
Code for an opening door will never change, while the design will probably every time.

I think EAT3D should make something like chapters downloading. For example: I dont need full training but i`m interest in some chapters from this video and i can buy em.

I thought it was a solid intro to UDK, maybe a bit too much "been there, done that" but again, as an intro you couldn't ask for a better man to learn from. Thanks again Hourences.

I've heard/read on more than one occasion that the skylight is pretty much obsolete because of LightMass.

Is it just a matter of preference or is there some real advantage to using the skylight along with the updated lighting system?

First post on this forum, hi everyone!

Just watched the whole tutorial and i gotta say, better for a beginner than i first thought. UnrealED is the first level editor since Qool (i think it was called that? for quake2/half-life) that i can get my grasp around quickly.

Hourences, you did a great job of keeping the pace up and the video, allthough "lengthy" never felt boring.

However, i've ran into a problem though. When i try to change the brush vertexes my pivot isn't aligned with the XYZ-pivot in the lower left corner of the viewports. It didn't look like you had the same problem in the tutorial, if someone has a good way to rearange the pivots it would be greatly appreciated!

Hourences

Thanks.
You mean that red green blue arrow thing is somewhere next to the brush? If you select vertices it will move the vertices instead, and be on the right place. It will place itself on top of the selection.

As you can see, when i select vertexes, they don't have the same pivot to the XYZ-angles, as my viewport has. The pivot is the same when i'm moving surfaces in Geometry Mode, but not when i select lines/vertexes.

Did I see it wrong in the video? looked like you could just ctrl+alt select vertexes in the top-vp and just change them around like everything else with the "correct" pivots.

Hopes the pictues clears things up, sorry for clogging up the thread. I can make a new thread if you like.

Oh, you just enabled local space. Top tool bar has this little drop down menu somewhere in the middle (next to search binoculars), it must be set to World.

The ~ key on keyboard is the shortcut for this.

<3 will there be a "Menu/Hud - Tutorial" later on?

Or do you know a few links to menu/hud tutorials? (Ive been looking for them for ages)~

Most likely good, but 55$ with the insanely HUGE amount of free video/text tutorials out there (for both UDK and UT3 ect), im going to have to decline.

i have to agree with braincells and angel, $55 seems a lot to pay for tutorials on a development kit that is free to the community. thats just my 2 cents.

I just get my hand on it and from what I can tell you can compare it to free 3d buzz video. Even if those video are great, it's just a great workflow to speed up your level design skills. In production a good workflow worth money.

Level design is often overlook but to make a believable environment nice looking asset is not enough. So depend on what you actually want but for just watching few tutorial already I can say it's good stuff. 55$ ( around 35€) is not that much if you consider having the market price for video tutorial ( take the gnomon one for example) .

I finished this video course about two weeks ago, for somebody who is new, it is highly recommended, I also watched the 3DBuzz UDK videos which are also great, but this one, the workflow that Hourances teaches is what makes it even better, you see a master creating & explaining how he makes Unreal levels.

Sorry to said but there is nothing new in the Eat 3d video. All can be seen everywhere else. Waste of money to be honest. :0(

i would say, gnomon video is the best one , helped me out with the UI and thinking before doing something.

Gnomon is horribly overpriced and mostly overrated.
Have you even watched this dvd?
I've had great fun with Eat 3Ds videos so far, they're very helpful and professionally set up, I'll be looking into getting this.

second that. Gnomon is one of my favorite tutorial website because of their countless high quality tutorial. But to be honest that one was one of the worst

Definitely getting this later on. The overall workflow is what interest me the most, and it seems this will cover that pretty extensively. It's great to have these alternatives. I hope you guys make more of these for UDK.

I have no doubt of the quality of the videos you guys produce, but the prices listed on your site for nearly all of your training courses are a little high for my pocket book.

Maybe one day I'll be able to afford this stuff, and when I do I'll be sure to look to you guys.

All i can say is who cares which one is better.. It all comes down to your learning style.

Brexer

EDIT:

Actually, i made a mistake, the Eat3D one is better then the Gnomen one (has nothing to do with learning style, but rather amount of actual useful information and the quality of the information), but you do get a few nice tips in the Gnomen one aswell.

But, suggest buying the Eat3D one if you only can afford one.
