Been working on this game for the past 7 days. Never done anything like this before and I'm also new to 3D
and have only been making custom assets for about 3 month (1month actively) so be gentle :D

Its a 3rd person cartoonish casual platform game where you start at the bottom and race to the top
collecting stars and you can see how long it took you to reach the top and challenge your friends :)

90% of the machinery is made in kismet but will convert stuff into unreal script later on.
No HUD yet that shows how many stars you’ve collected but I'm waiting until i know how many is needed.

Hope you like it!
Cheers!

although I wouldnt even survive the first jump (yeah I even suck at SuperMario bros) it looks totally cool. but I definitely miss some kind of 'cling' sound when collecting the stars

btw. is there a specific camera function to make the building partly invsible or is it a mesh thing?

Its done in kismet. Just a trigger touch and a change material node :)
Suck at programing but would love to know how to do it with UnrealScript

Oh yeah the sounds will be added later :)

That's some nice work there, fair play to you. It's nice to see this sort of thing being done, killing the myth of unreal being a "first person shooter engine".

How far are you thinking of taking this? Is it a learning exersize or something you are thinking of taking to a complete game?

I doubt unreal is seen as primarily a FPS engine, maybe primarily as a Third Person Shooter engine. Seeing as that's what it's used for mostly. If you think about it there aren't many FPS games that use it.

Well it was mainly thought up just to increase my portfolio material so I would have a higher chance of getting a level design job lol :D
but I have played with the thought of actually making it a complete game. Maybe after I have completed the first level and planed the game a bit better.
And the 3D assets would definitely need a polish from someone that knows what the they are doing hehe.
And a good programer because I hardly know anything about UnrealScript

When did you start playing games? Unreal isn't seen as a FPS engine? Really?

Video games didn't start at Gears of War..

As for this thread, I like the idea. I'll keep an eye on this.

Oh, what a pity. I thought there was a simple camera bool or so.

But thanks anyway :)

it would be really easy for you to transpose alot of what you are currently doing through kismet to uscript, to be honest...but for things like transitions etc (indeed, lots of what you would want for this kind of gametype) I personally think it's better to stick with kismet.

People can put me right if I'm wrong here, but I pretty much view it as kismet is great for single use stuff in individual levels, whereas uscript is for what needs to be happening all the time. I see it as a great advantage to be able to use kismet to meet simple scripted needs in levels rather than, for example, having to have a coder add a specific mapactor to fulfill some logic.

mkandersson, if you would like some assistance in terms of 3d assets and code give me a shout, I'd be happy to offer some help.

Heh I like the concept so far, reminds me of some casual games I was developing a while ago.

Oh and thanks for the idea of using Kismet to switch materials when the view is being blocked, I haven't touched UnrealScript yet so that'll work nicely as a placeholder feature in my projects!

Yeah well I was thinking of converting the HUD and the camera to unreal script later on.
Thanks! I have thought more and more about creating a small team (like 4-5 people) to make a little game
out of this and perhaps sell it when it’s done.

But what I would need then is a Programmer, a Props/Environment modeller and a Character modeller/Animater
and that everyone is active working on this :) I'm out of work so I'm going to spend about 8h/day 5d/week on this if it
gets serious enough (but thats me)

Haha same here, it's pretty much taken over my life atm.. If i'm not using it I'm trying to figure out how to do something when I get home. Surely I'm not the only one who used to draw games and game levels when they were a kid.. UDK has re-ignited that boyhood dream for me, haha, now i'm doing it for real! :D

Also nice work, I want to play this game :)

I'm stuck at the moment =/ I want to implement more features to have a better variation on gameplay...
You can do only so much with this platform concept. I was thinking like adding some
form of puzzle and maybe fighting some pirates on the way to spice it up a bit :)
Like combining Donkey Kong with Goof Troop :P but I dont know.
