So lately I've been seeing a lot of this "I melee the air to challenge you to a 1 v 1" stuff going on...I only play GoW1 every now and again and I always wondered why people always did that and it took me a while to figure out what was going on...but months passed after I figured out what it was before I started seeing it in gears2. In fact, today, I started bolting over to where I saw two teammates standing, and one of THEM meleed at me, as if he was telling me not to join the area as another one of my teammates was 1 v 1ing another guy.

Personally I think this is stupid...I want to win and do it as fast as possible...but that's not why I'm posting this...i'm just looking to start a discussion on why this is coming back and who exactly is for stuff like this. When did this make it's way into GoW2? I think it's really weird and that if you wanna do this you should just play a private match...am I the minority here?

i thought it only happened in public at sudden death..
weird i wouldn't trust to do it if his team mates standing there

sudden death is the only time its cool though
and you dont have to accept the challenge...

I had a guy do it to me a few days ago on blood drive...it was a 1 v 1 situation but my teammate was on his way over to help me when I realized that this guy wasn't drunk, he was challenging me to 1 v 1....I meleed the air to indicate I accepted (and i beat him) but lets say I didn't want to accept...what would I do? Just keep shooting at him?

Good Points...

1 v 1 is definitely the ideal situation...

But their are times when someone will give the signal while others are still alive. Usually happens when things start to get personal...

Here are a few things:

If someone on the other team signals a Shotty Battle while your friends are still alive, ask your teamates to pull out a smoke and swing the smoke, if they want to stay in watching distance...

Have your friend kill themselves... sounds crazy, but I play with some hardcore friends, and if I get heated enough, I'm gonna challenge someone... and my friends know I would do the same thing for them...

Be careful when the enemy team is outnumbering you and try a signal, they usually just want you to accept, then give yourself up for humiliation. I never accept a shotgun battle if it's me vs. more than one player. I'm not gonna take the chance of more than one player shooting at me...

Shotty Battles are part of the game, and going 1 v 1 is one of the biggest reasons we play this game... it's just a matter of how the enemy wants it to go down in the end... I've had enemies signal me with a snub pistol... puts a smile on my face "Alright, let's do this"...

Here's an Hilarious example of how not to engage in a shotty battle...

My boy Mario/aka Fyasko/aka banned... knew what he was doing, I don't think the other guy did... LMAO...

Just got finished playing the greatest match of Gears 2 I've ever played. It was Warzone on Security and the first two rounds we were actually playing. During the second round, it was three Locust vs. Me at grenades..well they were all shooting their shotguns at me, but then all of a sudden two of them fell back and just watched. I ended up killing only one of them. The next round, I go out actually playing, laying down cover fire and what not, and I notice everyone but me is in the middle..and they're shotgun dueling, one vs. one at a time. The rest of the match ended up like that and it was so freaking awesome. When the score was 4-3 (us 3, they 4), it was 2v1 (2 of them vs. 1 of my team mates) and my team mate ran up to Ink, picked it up, and the other two Locust followed him, expecting to shotgun duel him one at a time. He threw the Ink grenade and I guess the Locust wanted it to be Sudden Death 1v1 so one of them walked into the Ink and died, then my team mate went over and killed him, and then gibbed the other Locust when he wasn't even expecting it. It was so hilarious. I sent my team mate a message when the game was over and he replied "Yeah...I don't play by the rules..haha." So now the score was 4v4 and immediately as soon as the round starts, everyone takes up positions and starts laying down Lancer fire; we were playing for real this round. We ended up killing all of the Locust that round because it was 3v1.

There are a few times that I have melee'd the air to engage in a shotgun battle, and just about eighty percent of the time, the other person responds. I've only had one opportunity to challenge someone to a Chainsaw Duel before, but they didn't want to duel. He was at the top of the stairs on Avalanche behind cover and I was at the bottom of the stairs and I stood there revving my chainsaw because we had been trading Lancer fire back and forth for a little bit, and he had even tried to chainsaw me earlier in the round. He never responded though..I even walked half-way up the stairs with my Lancer revved and he never came out of cover. I would have loved to have dueled him though. I probably would have been too happy and lost though.

That was hillarious man, but my personal oppinion of the shotgun duels is that its just something that should be done in private matches.

Anyways, if anyone ever attempted to do this to me on public I would just pull out my lancer and down them or something. Really, it's already a duel and there are no pre-set terms.

Shotty battles really only live on in private and GOW 1 public execution.
