Ok I have seen the idea for this from another person, i did not copy any materials its all done from scratch but if anyone knows who else did this let me know so i can say thanks for the idea ;)

The planet shader uses vertex painting to lay down your land masses, water, ice ect. You have full control over ice colour and spec, ground, water (which is animated and has spec), 2 cloud layers (which are animated), lights from citys (colour and brightness) and also atmosphere colour and density... ill add more to this as i build it.

Thats really nice. Hmmm. Gives me some ideas. Could combine this with my planetarydata generator and populate a universe...

Thanks guys much apreciated!

Iv now updated it added a lot more control and you can now make suns and moons too... also turn off clouds and atmosphere (also more control over the atmosphere. here take a look.

You should add the possibility to make suns of diffrent strengths/colors as well. And it will be awesome, already is. but more awesomeish. :D

Hboybowen - Yeh ill be using it in a game.. but i plan to have it open enough to use in any projects.

TheSpaceMan - you already can do that its all built in to the shader check out bellow... :) You can pretty much do any colour/strenth ect.

Rhinokio - That could well be the guy ill have to give him a heads up at some point!

Any other sugestions are wellcome!

Hboybowen - Yes deffinatly! I do want to get it finished and implemented into my own project first though if thats not too rude of me... :S

If anyone has any requests for similair shaders i could prob have a crack at them if its not to time consuming.

Good start!

my suggestion: Use an If statement to sharpen up the edges of the vertex painting, maybe add a high-frequency fractal texture to the vertex shading output to add some tiny-scale variation. The edges of the 'land' and 'water' are WAY too fuzzy and smooth. Other than that, this looks purely awesome!

KazeoHin - I think ill have to PM you about your ideas a bit later, Im not sure about the fractal texture you speak of :)

Well i would like the shader to be perfect first... i have a few more things i want to add to it first hopefully this weekend.

I used Max8, photoshop for the ship thats all.

Im thinking about making a tutorial. Creating a model from scratch and getting it into unreal.. would there be any real need for one?

love ya hardsurface model matey ya wipped that up pretty quickly well done..Nice texture style aswell.
Any tutorial is a good tutorial..I dont use maya or max but a tut would be interesting.

one thing about the ship that kinda bugs me is its really loaded with squares and rectangles, i'd try and get some more interesting shapes,

I do understand what you mean about the shapes.. but my thinking behind it was thats the "aesthetic" this race has. Im going to do a few races, and do a few different looks to them... unless it just looks "out of place or wrong".... hmm

I really like it a lot, but if I had to make a crit:

I like 3 out of 4 perspectives, but the front angle perspective (the bottom right) looks kinda bleh to me. I think the reason is it looks kinda uniform/chubby from that perspective. Personally, I would taper from back to front (front slightly more narrow) and bottom to top (top more narrow). Pinch in the front and the top a bit and it might break up that sorta boring silhouette. Just my 2 cents, otherwise I love it.

No probs! check the site soon for the model tutorial i have done 5 videos creating a basic model in max, creating the high poly for the normal map, texturing it and then taking it into unreal. Ill get those online as soon as iv added the voice over...

Also if you guys could share any cool planets you make that would be ace, just post pics in here! cheers :)

Awesome tuts, any chance you're going to make the other ones with voice overs as well? I'm particularly intersted in the texturing parts since that's what I'm newest to and following exactly what's going on in photoshop can be a little tough. Appreciated regardless, very nice!

Oh sure, we're all taking it easy over the break, was just curious if we could get some more voice overs. Otherwise you can't really read the text so it's like watchin some guy work which is cool but ...

Right now I'm cheating and just doing a quick paint up in Zbrush with poly painting, but you're doing the more traditional work-flow along with some nice little tricks and tips that'd it'd be fun to follow. Whenever you get the chance, it's all good if its not until the new year. Cheers ;)

With about five minutes of tweaking the shader I was able to make a very cool looking land/ocean borders. PM me and I'll send you the file, Gokzor.

Yeh sure fire it to my email adress ill have a look, but to be honest for the game i was creating the soft slightly shadowed edge to the terain was what i was looking for. But looks good man i like it!

I like OP's planets, really nice stuff, so I thought I'd post this here.

A while back (like 2 years ago) my buddy and I were working on a now dead game for a competition. We were creating cutesy little planets with a cartoony look. So I wrote a random planet generator that queried a database of textures and some random perlin noise maps... I'd soften the perlin noise maps (so they didn't look absurd) and layer the textures to get all kinds of different planets:
