View Full Version : Simple blender -> udk tutorial posted

It took a while (ok, too long, and yes, I'm a noob), but I finally figured out how to get a simple mesh from blender into the udk. There seemed to be a group of stuff on the net, but it just wasn't watered down enough for me to grasp it.

This tutorial takes a simple cube from blender, textures it, exports it and imports into to the udk, makes a material, maps it, and finally places it in a simple level. Sounds simple, but it wasn't for some reason.

If you (or anyone else here) has any suggestions on improving it, please let me know.

My goal was to have it be as simple as possible, so there isn't a lot of fluff in there (even though it turned out pretty long).

I've been meaning to write one myself about importing characters with animations in UDK from Blender but I just need to find the time.

I do the animations in Blender and with a few adjustments UDK on import they work fine. I'm see if I can free up some time next weekend to get started on that tutorial.

It's a great program, and free. I don't have much experience with maya or 3dsmax, which are the defacto "pro" tools, so I can't compare. I will say that I wish that the UDK had native .blend file support. With the UDK being free now, I think a lot more hobbyists will start using it.

Is there any chance that UDK will support native .blend files ?
And as I see UDK support FBX file format, does that include skeletal meshes or only statics.

with blender 2.59 u can export static meshes with fbx exporter, skeletal mesh support is still not working. however, u can use psk/psa exporter by darknet (built in blender) for skeletal mesh.
