Known for high-quality Video Training Modules and the Mastering Unreal Technology book series, 3D Buzz (http://3dbuzz.com) has put together these videos (http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/VideoTutorials.html) that guide you through the basics of the Unreal Engine editing suite, as well as working with a simple game project.

Thanks to 3D Buzz! We hope you enjoy the videos.

The assets mentioned in the video have just been uploaded! You can get them here (http://download.udk.com/tutorials/using-udk/3dbuzz_assets.zip).

Hey guys,

I did the skeletal mesh pipeline videos in the section above the 3d buzz vids.
If there is other material in the skeletal mesh pipeline you all would like to learn about, feel free to post it and I can make some more videos when I have time.
Also, if there is something you'd like me to go more in-depth about, I can do that as well when I get some time.

Thanks,

-Jeremy

Just a question ..
Is all the TuT's in Maya ? I only ask because I use 3Ds MAX 2010.

___{EDIT}___

I would also like to know how to set up save settings & the publishing process.

jernst

the one's that I did are in maya. The animation staff here uses maya, but the modeling staff uses max. go figure :)

However, A lot of the material covered is in the editor in the skeletal mesh pipeline vids. I spent very little time in maya, so it should still be useful I think ;)

I'm missing a file, that should be supplied by 3dbuzz.com for a video tutorial.

The video is, topdowngame, inside that zip file, there should be a package file (topdown_test) to use along with the videos. (package for the contentbrowser use with premade assets by 3dbuzz.com)

It's not there! ;)

so, maybe reupload the total zip file, INCLUDING this package, or seperately upload the package file in the video udn page, as extra download, just underneath that particular zip file. (for people who have this zip file already for instance)

Same thing here. It seems to be some sort of a glitch at 0:17, the sound glitches for a split second and the video skips to 0:19. Then the picture is frozen while the sound is still running.

THANK YOU EPIC AND BUZZ!!! some cool stuff we'll be learning, top down game top-notch!!

Now all we need is in-depth UnrealScripting videos, but with the Mastering Unreal III coming up thats covered also, would just be nicer to have video tuts, sooo much easyer to follow than books :)

You can use UT3 assets included with UDK for a noncommercial game, but not UT3 assets not included with UDK.

If you wish to sell your game, all assets must be owned by you.

I think maybe he was referring to the assets we provided for the videos. I assume the answer is the same either way though.

Yes, same answer. Noncommercial games can ship the assets included with UDK. Rights to other Epic-owned and/or 3D Buzz-owned assets are not granted by the EULA.

I have watched them all in the last two days and have discovered that
16_-_TopDownGame__022_AddingBots_SpawnBots.mp4 is incomplete, it is only 3:30 min long. This is true for both revisions of the top_down_game.zip

This is some great stuff , I really liked the training set . Now I got all the tutorials on all subjects , except for advanced unreal script tutorials . I am waiting for these , I collected so much tutorials that it reached over 8 gigs of tutorials . I always thought the more tutorials the better . I got to say my favorite tutorials was on the Whizzle development , the hourence and 3dbuzz .

They are very good, I still am not very turned on to the technology, maybe a little skeptical, as well as the obvious: Proprietary Editor, it's always hard to pick up a new interface, I sure wish I was already on-board with UE since 1 or 2, that would have been helpful :P

Just wanted to Thank 3DBuzz Team for this... They are just WOW!!!

This is my first time using Unreal Dev Tools and I just finished the UI and SimpleLevel Series and I feel much more comfortable with UDK that i feel i can start my own design (at least the level design part). I will finish all the series in hope to get familiar with the other aspects better, but again very good job!

BTW does any one know if the series has some UnrealScript Tutorials? If not is there any future plans to add that?

The tutorials are awesome. So well thought out and easy to follow.

My only issue is tutorial "16 TopDownGame 022 AddingBots SpawnBots" is only half done. He was in the middle of talking and the end logo and music cuts in and the video stops. I haven't a clue how to finish the rest of the kismet because im not sure what he was doing with all of the variables and stuff :X

But still, awesome tutorials ;D

I'm just problem prone I guess. I'm in the first Lightmap tutorial video and I've run into another problem. I have the red cube at the proper sizes, but when I switch to geometry mode and select the corners of it, exactly like he does in the video, mine do not drag straight down. My arrows for the translation widget go diagonal, not straight up and down. It skews the red box instead of moving it the way I want. If I click the red line between the corners, it drags it right on one of the views, but on the others it just looks messed up and it is certainly not going straight. This never happened before, it just started now. If I exit the program and/or start a new map I still have this problem. What am I doing wrong here? I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance~

thanks 3d buzz and epic. This has been a real help on working out the engine. a couple pages back jeremy earnst said that he could do some others if we needed help with things. I was just wondering if you could do one on setting up things for your own game. The editor comes set to make UT3 games and i was wondering how you implement your own scripts for how your game works. If you could make one of these it would be really helpful. thanks again for the tutorials

I am wondering if you could do a "Basic-Menu" - Tutorial (Probably you could just add that to your top-down game... I am sure many people would like to see this because without menu, the game does not have a "border" around it~

In the KISMET video tutorial there's something that I had to do differently to get the result we're wanting: turning the light off at level start in 05_-_Kismet__005_TogglingMaterial.mp4

http://www.tomacmuni.com/files/triggerudk.jpg

Besides the steps on the video, I had to also turn off the light object using the level loader wire to the light toggle event. It's shown in the image.

Hey Guys,

I finally got around to walking through the VTMS on the weekend (well done Buzz Crew) I found that due to an update in the Jan/Feb UDK there is now an error in the VTM - in "05_-_Kismet__013_DelayedCountdown" video at around 6min 38sec they use an Action->Switch->Delayed. This node was remove from the UDK for some odd reason so I spent about 10 mins playing around to find a work around and thought I would share it with the community.

http://users.tpg.com.au/cglerum/images/delayedswitchvariant.JPG

Basically what I did was used a regular Switch with 11 links and a 'Remote Event' node calle "CountDown". I then put the delay on the link from the Remote Event to the Switch so you can modify the delay time in 1 spot. Then with each Play Announcement node I send the 'Out' to an 'Activate Remote Event' node firing off "CountDown" which allows the flow of the countdown to work as if I was using a Delayed Switch.

My setup has the same layout roughly to the VTM - if anyone is not sure what I did or needs clearing instructions let me know :) I am happy to help.

One thing I would like to see the Buzz crew do for VTMs for the UDK in the future is focus more onthe UDK side and less on the editor side - I would have liked to see some VTMs based on "this is how you get a character and camera into your udk project" - Dont get me wrong I loved the VTMs and I have learned a great deal more. But I would have at least expected a small uscript VTM on gettig a custom character, weapon and gametype and camera system (kinda a VTM on how Dungeon Defence or Wizzle was made) that would have been AWESOME :) Anyway - I hope this post helps those stuck in the Kismet VTM. Enjoy.

You have your widget pivot orientation set to local - the drop down box in the top of the screen that says "local" - click on that and set it to world. That should solve your problem.

Sounds like you place the mesh as a static mesh actor instead of an interpactor. You should be able to right-click on it and choose Convert to InterpActor or you can delete the existing one and place a new one as an InterpActor.

It's probably been removed in a recent UDK version. I believe they are trying to steer more towards using Matinee for these things so that you are forced to use MaterialInstances properly.

How do I fix this problem.

I'm trying to set up the display message when the player doesn't have all the keys, but every time I set off the trigger the game goes into pause instead of going through the Teleport and telling the player they don't have all the keys.

I think it has something to do with the delay feature in kismet as I turn that off I can go through the teleport fine, but when I add the delay it goes into pause mode.

Today I updated the Video Tutorials (http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/VideoTutorials.html) page with a file containing English .srt subtitle files for each of the videos.

The subtitle files are text files with timing information, and a player like VLC can read them.

They might help non-english speakers understand what's being said some more, or members of the community could use them to make translations for their native languages. We are in the process of translating them into Korean.

Hey all,

I'm thinking about doing another batch of pipeline videos of things I usually do on a day to day basis. I probably won't get to it until sometime after E3 is over, but I'm thinking about making videos on(approval pending):

Gore-how to set up gore in the editor using alt mesh weights
Animation-going over the animset viewer tips and tricks and workflow
Anim trees - going over how to do some cool stuff with skeletal controls in an anim tree.

If anyone has any interest, let me know and I'll see if I can get some approval to hit some of these. Would probably be a useful resource for UDN anyhow.

Thanks!

I've worked out how to fix this.

instead of using "New Actor> Material Instance> Set Vector Param" which doesn't exists any more.

You need to create a new Matinee> Add New Empty Group> Add New Vector Material Param Track

Then create two key frames to animate light on/off

Plug into Kismet using the switch node as in the tutorial and set Link1> Play, Link2> Reverse.

That worked for me :D

I'm on the cinematic tutorial. It says I need a dynamic actor. Must have chosen the wrong thing but don't know what to choose since you didn't really specify anything. I picked the material instance but selecting the light itself still didn't work.

Quite annoyed right now. Going from a visual tutorial to trying to decipher text isn't working for me.

Hi, I am new to UDK and to these forums and I have a problem. I know this has been already asked, but since I am beginner I still can't do it. I am watching the 3D Buzz tutorials and at 05_-_Kismet__005_TogglingMaterial I need to do this: "New Actor> Material Instance> Set Vector Param", but it isn't here, probably it was removed in an update. I read this:

The problem is that I don't know how to animate the light on/off. Again I am beginner, I would be grateful if someone can tell my how to do it, step by step. I created 2 key frames, but what's next? I tried putting some materials in "Material", setting a Param Name, moving keys, tried also with a static mesh (that fluorescent tube) and InterpActor, but still when I turn the light on and off, nothing changes.

I've been going though the 3D Buzz tutorials and, as a beginner at UDK, I'd have to say that it has been very frustrating. There seems to be features mentioned in each video that just do no exist anymore. It's really time consuming to go searching for solutions or workarounds. I'd say it's time for these videos to be redone.

Right now I can't figure out why my point lights won't turn off like in the Top Down: Key Touch Events video. help?

We at UDKLearning are in the middle of a complete revamp of these tutorials and basing them on the Latest builds. They should be done by the 1st of the year. There is allot that has to be changed, and some features that have been added that need new tutorials.

You can follow us from the link in my sig.

Hey zerd_sword what I recommend you do in the mean time is download an early build of the UDK, one that is relevant to the tutorials so that you can do them, once you get through them you should have no trouble moving onto the newer builds of the UDK as the principals are basically the same - Obviously the earlier tuts do not cover things like the new terrain system or the new UI system scaleform, but you can still learn a lot from those tuts.

Thanks for the suggestion Chrustec, but I just put my nose to the old grindstone and worked my way through. I learned a bunch in the process, swore a lot at the monitor, and came out the other side! Getting back into Flash after taking a 5 year hiatus was probably the suckiest part, but I've got to admit that having actionscript functionality is pretty awesome.

Can't wait for udpated tuts though. I'm sure there's more to learn.

the tuts are out of date but still very useful. only major thing that is missing from newer versions is UISCENES.everything else i have been able to learn and use. i started with june version and now use august.

the main thing i would suggest when redoing the tuts is to only focus on whats needed in the each tuturial , the current ones spend half the tuts making named variables you dont need. ive had to watch many for over 5 mins before he even mentions the 1 node needed.
i understand hes trying to show how things can be done with extra depth if needed but normally it isnt and can be confusing going thru long tut making silly amount of named variables just because hes got ocd and has to have it neat and tidy.

big thanks for the tuts helped me alot.

i suggest first one you cover in new tuts is UISCENES/ canvas/hud , my game has pretty much all the things needed apart from that.
