Hi,

Was woudering how would i go about creating a custom door which when the player moved towards it, that it would open.

would i create the door in 3ds max with the animation attached to it that played on a trigger or is it more complex?

Nope, sounds about right. Create your door, animate (either in MAX or Matinee) then apply a trigger to play the animation.

I would recommend a Matinee animation above the max animation, just because it will be easier to modify once it's in editor. Besides, the door will need different animations if opened in different directions (assuming it's a swinging door).

Well hell, you won't even have to animate that. Just make a trigger move the entire static mesh...

You definitely want to animate it in Matinée. If you are to animate it in 3dsmax it has to be a Skeletal Mesh, Skeletal Meshes is less convenient to use for collision and such. So make it static mesh, with the pivot/origo at the hinges, and animate it in Matinée. See GamerKnight's post. :)
