Greetings,

Probably a serious n00b question (I'm just starting out): I've applied the M_Beam material to a wall (it's animated). I can't seem to remove it now and replace it with another material. If I drag a material from the Content Browser onto it, it seems to become an actor(?). If I right click on the M_Beam material that was applied to the wall, I don't get the same sub-menu that I usually get.

Any help appreciated.

With the replacing material you want selected, try right clicking the M_Beam material where it is applied in editor. The material should turn blue. Now, select "Apply Material" (Once again, this is assuming you have your new material selected in the generic browser) and it should work.

just go to your top or left viewport and click the blue box which would be your animated material, go back to genric browser and click in between to materials (meaning no materials are selected) and then go back to the blue box, right click, then click apply material.

thats if you want to get back to the default material, if you would like to put another material on, just follow those steps, except for where i put click in between 2 materials, just click on the one you want!

Thanks for the reply.

I think the problem is the M_Beam material isn't selectable in the editor. If I click on it, it just sort of animates one step. In fact when I left click anywhere in the editor it animates one step.

Could you post a screen?

Have you tried what I suggested, regardless of the material's appearance (meaning selected or not)?

Yeah, I did try what you suggested.

Right clicking on the material in the editor does not bring up the same context menu as when right clicking on other materials and the menu it brings up does not have "brush properties" like surfaces with other materials.

Trying to select the M_Beam material doesn't seem to work either, it just advances the animation of the material one frame or so. I'm sure there's a logical explanation, I just can't figure it out!

Here is the menu that pops up when right clicking on the surface w/the M_Beam material applied (clicked right in the middle of the surface):

Not sure I understand; how can I select the individual face of a side wall in top view? Your first message mentions a blue box in the top view - not seeing that either.

Thanks for the help though!

fwiw, I've just found that it seems like the problem is related to NOT being able to select surface w/the left mouse button after the M_Beam material is applied.

If I click on an adjacent wall, then select "all adjacents", the surface w/the M_Beam material is selected and can be replaced.

you need to set it so you can select transparent materials. There is a blue toggle button towards the top that you can press. Try that out.

Got it!

Thanks, that was it. For the record, the tooltip said "Allow Translucent Selection" and it's located in the top tool bar next to the "Distance to far clipping plane" slider.

Question though, if you don't mind; why would something like that be an option? IOW's, why wouldn't you always want to select transparent materials?

Also, the selection seems weird; if there is something solid behind the surface w/the transparent material applied, and you click on that surface, it will select the surface with the transparent material, but if you click in an area that shows the void through it, it doesn't select the surface.

Anyway, mystery solved as far as the original question. Thanks again.

Does the material have some level of transparency by any chance? If so, you can select it by switching on Allow Translucent Selection from the toolbar menu

edit: nevermind, I see it was solved already
