hi,i am new with udk/ut3 but i am using now the udk.i am making a project and i need to put objects that their materials are based in glass.I have made it in 3ds max and my textures are a diffuse one and an alpha. At the image you can see the settings that i did and then i exported it. My problem now is how to make the transparent material in udk so i can have the sign.
here is the 3dmax image http://yfrog.com/05sign2zoj
thanks for your time:D

Just plug-in your black and white alpha map into the Opacity socket. You can only plug in one channel ie red.

Or plug that alpha mat strieght into the opacity socketl. Notice how its using the red channel.

i did it as you told me but still nothing. When i applied the materials and built everything the sign still looks solid black and not like a glass one.first i used the textures that i have applied with max, then i tried to use vector3 and the alpha to see if it will work like that.

(i start to think if its possible something wrong when i applied the mats in max,but as you can see in the first image that i posted it was fine there)
sorry for all that, but i try since yesterday,i am going to have my whole lvl ready and still havent managed to have signs:p

well,i manage to do it in this way:i set a texture sample on the diffuse socket with the color that i want my alpha to look like and i put my alpha texture into the opacity socket and after that, i changed my blend mode into blend_translucent(looks simple but not for people who started using the udk for a weekXD)
My result now is like my sentece is floating on the air.How can i make the box to be a little bit visible(like you can see the edges from the box)and not 100% invisible?I thought to play with the power slot but i dont know what to put at the base/exp slot.
here is an example what i am looking for:

still learning about materials myself but found this : hourences (big thanks by the way!) (http://www.hourences.com/book/tutorialsindex.htm) invaluable in understand makeing materials and should provide what you are looking for. but off the top of my head on the black parts of the alpha lighten them up a bit as black is invisible and white is opaque form my understanding and use the alpha channel(white node) but not sure if that matters.

Sorry people,i havent ignored you,i was trying to learn maya cause i found it interesting for some human models, but it was weird for me to get used to it since i am using max. Here is the "glass" sign that i have made,as you see the letters are floating in the air whereas i am trying to do something like the image that i have posted some time ago.I am not saying that i have searched any solution for it(regardless the site that genetransfer has posted),but i am going to do it now since i have time to carry on my project.

i hope that this point of view can help

Simple solution. Dont use a fully white Alpha Map.

My alpha map is this one
http://i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp329/JohnBaptista/sign.jpg
I only have 2 texture samples, one for the colour that the letters want to be and one which is my alpha. What i did was to make it from black into grey/close to white which it made the glass to look a little bit darker.I tried to make it as the image but i am happy as it is now, apparently UDK cant make 100% real glasses unless there is a way which can be complicated.Anyway,if you think that the are other ways to make glasses please post it here, it will help me.
Thanks for your help and the advices.

You gotta apply some colour to the rest of the glass too, not just the text.

Black is fully transparent, and white is fully visible. Make the black area a dark grey instead.
