Before I start Ill let you know who I am and what I am wanting to do.
My name is Brian Johnson and I have worked in the video game industry for about 7 years now. Most of my experience is in concept art and level design but I have done model rigging for animation and UVW maps. I have worked with the Unreal Engine for most of my commercial projects and love this engine very much. Since the UDK has been released I would like to start working with the idea of creating a small indie company and making the creation of my and others visions a reality. I have a love of all things horror and still am working hard to create a horror game that is different than most horror games I have seen.

I am writing the story and drawing up some concepts as I go, I guess you would call me a Writer/concept artists/3D modeller/texture artist/ Level Designer. Most people get scared at this as they think it makes me have way too much on my plate. I can guarantee that if I have enough people I would not have to do too much of this but I do enjoy contributing to each of those aspects nonetheless. This is what I want to do and will do more than I think is needed since I want it to happen badly! I will work on it alone if I have to but I would love to find like minded experienced individuals and the sooner the better in my book!

My ultimate goal would be to create a demo of a small portion of a game to show to interested parties for funding. Then going from there.

Without giving out too much info I will try to explain my idea in hopes that someone else will help me in my visions of an atmospheric game.

Singleplayer/Coop horror game

The player can take the role of a male or female investigator. Somehow a locked up serial killer in a small town asylum has gotten out of his cell and massacred the asylum staff. You have been called in to assess how he could have managed this feat and capture the suspect. Upon entering the asylum you notice things have gone very wrong on a scale no human could achieve, blood on the ceilings and walls, more than possibly could have come from the victims. Sounds of the victims can still be heard although they are all dead, scuttering can be heard in the halls, you can feel the presence of something not human.

The player would essentially play in first or third person(their choice) in action mode, but in investigative mode they would be in first person using their equipment to gain clues to what the killer is up to.

The killer has been possessed by an entity from a netherworld called the Seer. This entity has brought things from the netherworld into this world through the rituals the serial killer has performed.

Ultimately the character must find and confront the killer, but his/her path will be obstructed by the puzzles and horrific creatures either sent here or created by the Seer.

There will be no zombies! no zombies in my horror game, just so you know.

Some asylum images I would like to create the feel of (note these are photographs as reference, not something I created in 3D!):D

I will create a forum if I can get a team of like minded people together, comon horror fans, lets make a scary non zombie horror game! we can do this!

I'm quite interested in this project I love the horror game idea as well has the asylum setting. I'm a programmer that's about the extent of my ability's. I’ve worked with c++,java, php,c,c#, and unrealscript. I might be more inclined to join this project if there was a completed design doc explaining every feature and even that this game will use. I’m sure if you had a completed doc more programmers would be willing to join considering programmers seem to be very scarce here.

I am interested in these type of games , it seems like everyone wants to do a space adventure game . They can sometimes be boring , and there is to many . I would like to be part of this game . I can make good story scripts , and I am a 3d artist . I haven't really done levels But I know I can do them . I will send you some of my models , to show you what I can do . I am also working on a project , But I can do this also . My project is also a horror game , but in space . It is called Sins Of Havoc , it is going to be crazy . Maybe you can help me on this project too .

I have some questions:
How hard puzzles you plan to be on scale 0-10, where 0 is average skill of CS fan and 10 would be ZORK or harder.
How mature this game will be, ie. do you care about PG16, or rather you do game that has gore where it should and bad language etc are not tabu.
Do you really want to scare players or just keep them awake. I mean here playing mind games with them, for eg. cliche red barrels, one time you shoot those they explode and kill zombies that are not in your game, other time after you shoot those only more zombies will go out. This question is more about how do you want to keep players scared?

I am looking for project i can work on, but so far lots of plans and nobody answered with real stuff. I want to start mapping asap, not somewhere in January that will turn out to be June or later.

Thank you guys for your interest!

This will be a game for mature players, although there wont be massive amounts of gore, some things will be disturbing enough to warrant a mature ratings system I am sure. As for puzzles its more of an in game cinematic of sorts kind of like god of war cinematic push the button like sequences and or other forms of puzzles involving clues found on site and related to certain parts of the story. I dont want to get too in depth without a core team to work with and give insight to what would and would not be capable in the unreal engine. I would not like to have things like exploding barrels(been way overdone), or zombies(been way overdone) since there are games that use those two examples and use them so well there is no need in a new game to include those aspects. Several games have used the scare tactic well, but use the same tactic over and over til it gets dry and repetitive. I would like to use and mix up several different ways to scare the player be it subtly or in your face blatant.

Things like ghost like poltergeists that cannot hurt you and you cannot hurt them with conventional weapons, but they can throw stuff at you and are more heard than seen. there will be ways to scare them off, but like I said I dont want to give out alot of info till I can get a team together and iron out what would and would not be possible. Im a great level designer and concept artist, but I am not a coder so that is one thing making it hard for me to assess what I would be able to do. I imagine everything I have thought up would be possible though.

Anyone interested can email me at my email, I am on yahoo messenger under the same nick as my forum username.

Examples of some things that are done well, but unfortuneatly overdone that could be used well if used a little bit and not every other second. Fear alma apppearing outta nowhere was freaky sometimes, but they did it so much it was almost predictable. Doom3 specifically the hallways that lit up and screams could be heard in the light that passed the player when the symbols whizzed by, that was a neat effect.

Heres my thought on a puzzle I would like to do
Say some disgusting creature is chasing you, you cannot kill it so you must run away, shutting doors behind you, pushing over things to block its path towards you. Trying to escape this thing would be the puzzle. things like that would be neat to incorporate.

Its still early but I hope to include interested people in my visions a good story is hard to come by and I hope mine is good :D

If you want critics:

Your Acolyte doesn't fit well at all in that environment. Also I don't think it fits in a Horror game.

From your photo references Silent Hill came to my mind. You can do a combination of Silent Hill + Resident Evil (for the different tricks and quests).

Something more like this would suit better.

thanx for the critique!

although the concept is not finished yet, I will make him more ethereal if you will. More ghost like I guess I mean. I really want to veer far away from silent hill and resident evil as they do what they do and do it very well, although both are great inspiration to me. Of course the real model will be in 3D and this is just a visual representation. As for fitting in a Horror game, the dude makes things outta corpses, thats pretty horrible :P

Im trying to create something original or at least as close to the vision I am having, hopefully I can do this :D

I will update this picture as I go along finishing it, I probably will change the background image, since the asylum this will take place in is modern and was still functioning before the bad things started happening :D

again thanx for taking time to critique my art :D

Untextured EAA Match handgun

http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/451/abomination1.jpg
Abominations: These disgusting things are actually sewn up body parts to create a centipede like thing. They can crawl on the walls and ceilings and can spit venomous liquid that can block the players vision for a short time. Another creation of the Vile Doctors of the Netherworld.

http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/902/wailer1.jpg
Wailers: Some of the first victims of Peter were actually used to create these hideous creations. These are floating heads, they act more like alarms than anything else. If a wailer sees the player it will start screaming, alerting other demons of the players presence. easily dispatched, its best to sneak up on them. They have been created by 'Doctors' and spawn continously until these spawn points are destroyed. The spawn points are several headless bodies hung upside down on some kind of strings by the vile creatures who created them.

Very cool stuff. :) The horror genre can always use a good reboot from a fresh perspective.

I'd be up for helping if you're still looking for people. Admittedly I've just started with UnrealScript and UDK, but I'm a 6th semester university student in CompSci so it's coming pretty quickly.

Either way keep up the great work!

And you can contact me by PM here, or by e-mail: fntguedes@gmail.com

Hope to talk to you soon, love what I've seen here.
