I see many people have been having problems building maps (with speedtrees on them) without the editor crashing; so I figured I would make a quick tutorial for it.

First, load your tree onto your map and make sure it is selected.

Then Right click and select SpeedTreeActor Properties.

Next, scroll down and open SpeedTreeActor followed by Speed Tree Compone.

Now, Scroll down a little more and select SpeedTree and the look for Lod 3DEnd.

Now don't worry if your values aren't the same as mine, that depends on the settings you chose when you made your tree. What we are going to do, is change them so the editor can handle them. Change your values to the ones below.

Now, exit out of properties, save and build. You should have built successfully and should see your tree when you enter the game.

If you are still crashing, try lowering the values a little more and try again.

Hope this helps!

Yes, nice tutorial. When I get back to my workstation I'll try it and see if the crash goes.

Many thanks,
Matt.

Thank you for the compliments. :)

Were you able to get the tree into the editor in the first place? If so, try deleting the tree file and texture out of the package they are in. Now recompile it in SpeedTree and then re-import it into the editor and follow the above steps.

I know I had a problem once where the package was corrupt, so I ended up importing to a brand new package.

Hope this helps musilowski!

Why without crash ? Is there any reason why the tree should crash ? Mine never but I assume there is a way to avoid crashing for other people

A lot of people are having a hard time building without crashing when their are trees in the editor.

Blade, I'm not too sure who you are referring to, but yes this tutorial was made in Beta 2.

In BETA 2 there is a fix for SpeedTree: * Fix for some SpeedTree trees causing crashes

A lot of people were still having problems with the trees causing crashing even in BETA 2. That's why I wrote this tutorial.

I found that if I shut off the lighting it also helped with this problem too (in the speed tree's actor settings). Under the properties under "speed tree actor", then under lighting. I switched off "Accept dynamic lights?" and "Accept lights?" and it worked... but my trees are black.
