I was wondering if there was any way to install UDK to a flash drive so that it could be portable.

Possibly.. the only reason you can't do this with UT3 or UT2004 I would think would be the cd key which is needed to run it. UDK is free and doesn't require a key to run, so I'll hazard a guess that it's possible.

Nah, the UDK has a few registry entries.

Carry a .reg file too. Simple :P
Most games/softwares ect will try to read registeries and if they cant find it, they just write it them selves.

I'm hearing some ideas but does anyone know how to do it?

Have you just tried copying the whole folder to a usb drive and running it?

I just tested this out, and it works great! Simply run the installer and, when prompted, choose your portable hard drive as the installation directory. Just keep in mind that the PhysX drivers need to be installed on the machine you want to run it on, or else you'll get an error telling you that the file "physxcudart_20.dll" is missing. I'm doubtful, but I'm really hoping this means I can run UDK at school off of my portable hard drive so I can work there, and so I can get something I've been planning off the ground...I'll fill you guys in when I try it tomorrow, and I'll post any other issues I encounter.

Is there a way to install the physx drivers somewhere else. I'm also interested in running at my school, just think a large network, distributed computing, and 2 off periods.

So Lunazure how has it worked out for you? Have you figured out how to make it work at school?

I'm tempted to do this also, but what would happen if I later want to sell the game I make? How does this work legally?

The only difference is the hard drive you're developing on, so what could be a legal problem here?

When installing to Flash Drive I get problem
Please check the install location is valid, and there is enough space on the disk.
think its just the space ? the disk drive is only a 2gb ?

p.s. My UDK current install is only 1.43gb ?

It is quite possible that the install is looking to install files in a second directory like C:Registry and cannot find it, thus returns that error.
When deployed it doesn't take up all that much space. The second number is my Z drive's compression.

Difference might be in Portable HDD to USB I guess

install on your hard drive and then copy it to your flash drive...the setup process may be looking for more space than is actually needed (just o be safe it has enough free space)
also see if you can get the redistributable versions of directx and the other runtimes needed for the UDK if you plan to install on a pc that has downloading disabled or no internet connection..
