I might making an entire tutorial on animation a character with body and facial animations. Would be a fairly large tutorial. Try googling for some. I will show how to import into the UDK but not sure I am gonna do a fully blown tutorial like that.

Raven67854,
Amazing work, highly appreciated!:D
One question though, maybe you could also do some about kismet, cascade, phat, ui editor, facefx, actorx, and common things, not yet covered. It hasn't to be all very indepth, but global basics, with working example, like you did now.
Anyway, THANKS for your work on these tutorials. Love to see more very soon.
To others: if you have some tutorials, like these ones, or the same but from another perspective, or with other samples, please DO provide them, to the community. The more movies, the better.:)

Hi,
Great job on the tutorials, they are concise and to the point.
I really like to second the request for character importing from 3DS Max along with animations for the body and use of FaceFX to create a simple cutscene.

Good morning guys :). Well guys if somebody can provide me with the animations or the animated model. I can show you all how to use FaceFx. I haven't used it yet but I will sit down and learn it till I do then make a video on how to use it. The SpeedTree video's will be going up in a few hours as well guys. Thanks again glad you guys like my videos :).

About the fracture tutorial, how to change the default texture ? When you break the wall, we can see this texture, it's possible to change this ? It's when you create the fracture wall ?

I would be forever on my knees if you could show how to import a model that is disasembled for customisation (multiple heads, legs and torso) and animate it with the animation tree for example.

Alright guys I added the SpeedTree tutorials today. Also glad you guys like them :). I will be abit busy this weekend so expect only 1 or 2 tutorials a day. I am working on a tutorial on Intro to unreal script hope to have that up by Sunday. Once again thanks guys glad you like my tutorials.
@roychr
Hahaha well send me a completed model. I Haven't done to much with the animation tree. But I can't animate so :). If I had a simple test model to try out then I might be able to do it.

Glad you like my tutorials and sorry if I didn't answer of your questions. I am gonna head off to bed night guys.

Really awsome tutorials, i commented on your videos over at youtube but i figured i had to get you cred over here to. Really great, i was thinking of doing a series myself but i havent figured out much of the new engine yet.
EDIT: what i meant was, there is like 9001 fracture tool tutorials out and no tutorials seem useful when you have the documentation.
Maybe if you know how to setup a flashlight i'll be very pleased if you can create a tutorial for that, thanks!

I hope you do not mind but I set up a YouTube page named UDKBase.
I was looking for tutorial videos and there seemed to be so many on YouTube.
I decided it would be a good idea to combine the ones I found most useful and informative into one page. Not only so I could easily refer to them myself but for others who go on there for the same thing.
I actually added your videos Raven before I noticed this thread and the post I made previous. I also added ones by kcin228 and 104sargeisms. All the tutorials have been put into their own playlists, ie ones based on terrain are in the terrains playlist etc.
I have subscribed to all owners channels of the tutorials. I have also left a commment that the owners pages can be linked to via the subscribers panel which I located just below the video listings.

Your welcome.
It is good to see that the page is being used by quite a few people already. I had spent the previous five days looking up on guides and tutorials for UDK and UE3 engine that I figured it would be a nice idea.
Have uploaded a piece of my music so the channel will now list in the YouTube search engine, just type in UDKBase and then click on the name link to the side of the video although you can reach the page via the video which has a link to the page using the annotations editor.

Hey guys sorry for the delay. I have been pretty busy. I have added 4 new tutorials today. One shows how to add weapons, vehicles and a skybox. Another shows how to use ladders and jump pads. Another one shows how to make static mesh's with 3ds Max and import them into the UDK. And last but not least a tutorial showing the basics of geometry mode. Hope you guys enjoy my new tutorials. Also please send me a private message if you guys have any tutorial idea's. I am starting to run out sadly. Only thing I can think of is an asteriod clone tutorial I am working on.

Thanks for the videos , this helps a lot of people with getting started in unreal . It seems you roll out the videos pretty fast .
these were pretty damn helpful, thanks dude.
as said before, some animation tutorials would be awesome, not to mention a decent cascade walkthrough. I've been playing around with it recently but i cant figure out how to get moving emitters happening, for explosion "debris" trails and whatnot.
looking at the new ones now, keep it up whenever you feel inspired :P
edit: just a thought, you might want to have the level set up beforehand for some of the longer tuts, though i noticed you did this for some anyway.

Hey guys sorry for not posting anything last night. Kinda got sidetracked watching movies with some friends. I am starting on a quick and simple introduction to matinee. At the end I hope to have maybe a little fight scene going on :D. Also I think I fixed the audio in this tutorial. I know its much much louder than it normally is.

1) I think I can wip that up pretty quickly
2)Check out my getting started tutorial
3)Will make one
4)Check out my fluid surface actor. However I need to make another one for water volumes
5)Except a very simple one tomorrow night
6)Working on that series now just uploaded the latest one

Yo, I can import models etc. pretty well, but the things I was trying to do with my models were like making my map mostly entirely out of them...
however, from what I can tell I can only add very basic collision to models, so if I have a complex model the collision will not work correctly, so I ended up doing some time-consuming calculations and making my map with brushes....
I myself was considering helping you out with some tutorials, but on a more basic level, I noticed many of the comments on your youtube page were on topics I understood myself, and there are a few people in my CAD class at school that always ask me questions, whether I know or not, or how many times they ask the same question...within five minutes...
anyways, I might get camtasia and make a few basic tutorials, such as the water volumes to the fluid surface, not what I would expect you to put in a tutorial, however I'm not sure how to get a blurry effect whilst underwater, I noticed one of the example maps had this, is it another volume I'm missing?
(btw; to swim around in your "water" after adding fluid surface actor, resize your brush to take up the space that you want your water, then go to the brush dropdown from the top, select add volume, and select water volume.)
anyways, cheers, good job, I hope all of us congratulating you and thanking you will continue to motivate you to teach more.

I hope I am not asking too much, but can you do a very in depth tutorial on bsp brushes and building a level with them (Small level of course) :)
Socrates
11-19-2009, 08:29 PM
crap..I actually just made a level with bsp brushes that I am quite happy with, I could have recorded myself making it...
I'm sure it's been done but I re-made Blockfort from mariokart 64, took a model from a Halo CE custom map, and then got my scales and values from it in 3ds max. then used the brushes etc. to create my map.
I'm not sure if I myself could do an in-depth tutorial as I'm still learning new things everyday about the brushes, for instance the CSG intersect and dis-intersect buttons I'm not sure what they do, haven't used them yet...

If you make a PostProcessVolume. You can change the blurriness with the DOF variables found in the properties.

I am working on the asteroid tutorial :). I almost have all of the assets done. And I just need to make all of the different parts to the tutorial. It's uhm a challenge to make because youtube only allows me 10 minutes so with any luck I will have it up in the next few weeks. HOPEFULLY less :). But I am rather busy this week. Raven,
Man, you are awesome! Thanks so much for creating all of these tutorials. They have been incredibly helpful. The best thing is you are always easy to follow and get right to the point.
My requests would be:
1) Anything on UnrealScript.
2) Using Kismet to load a new level based on colliding with a portal or something like that.
3) HUD/Menu/UI related stuff
4) Setting up terrain textures where they apply themselves automatically based on height and angle. I keep reading hints that it can work this way, but haven't figured it out.
Thanks again.

I also have to post my Unreal Script tutorials first so you guys have a somewhat understanding of Unreal Script.
@fallingbrickwork
Thanks glad you like them.
You could always just post the source and then do the tutorial :p I'm actually putting together my own asteroids clone for my own learning purposes; I'm curious as to how you implemented the actual asteroids, was it with custom Pawn/Controllers or using your own Actor subclasses?

Hi, your videos are great, some of the few that I can actually follow.
You don't skip anything, or even start the beginner videos with so much as a cube on screen. That helps so much in understanding the workflow, and something that so many tutorial makers just don't seem to get. It's the difference between being able to follow you and learn, or being behind the "instructor" right from the start. So thank you, please continue all your great work.

Hey guys,
Thought I would give an update since I have been so silent on here as well as youtube. I scratched the Asteroids tutorial as I wasn't having that much fun making it. And instead I am now working on a RPG using the UDK. The tutorial is coming along well so far. I have no ETA on when it will be completed. However now that the holidays are over with. I am going to start posting more smaller tutorials again while I work on the big one.

Hello Raven, Thank you for all your hard work and effort you have put into the community. Would it be possible to get a tut on how to build like a very simple house
with a floor, 2 peice roof, 4 walls, and get it imported and be able to PICK the wall peice
2 and apply the MAT pick roof peice 1 and apply a mat?
We need to be able to import our buildings and apply our mats to them easily and still
have not figured out how.
We are using Softimage 2010 and exporting as ASE. Any help to this we would be

Some tutorials on how to swap out the default content would be nice, like the weapons, perhaps? These tutorials seem to cover world creation fairly well, but it would be nice to see how to make simple, custom weapons, like a pistol, replace the built-in link-gun.

I dont know how i missed this thread from start. Holly cow, u r awesome Raven. I need to say thanx m8. In speed tree tutorial when u imported everything to UDK u forgot to set compression method for normal map to TC_Normalmap. Maybe because of this u had your leaves darker in start. For me it works like a charm. I didnt catch u about lights quite wright. In my "lightning build options"
i am using lightmass. It works without problems. Also "direct light map" checkbox is checked under light properties. I dont know why it does not work with you. Anyway awesome tutorials. Keep it up.

Well just create your tree and terrain and place it. I can make a tutorial later on how to do this although it should be pretty straight forward. As for custom grass I will make a tutorial on how to do that later. Although I believe with speed tree I can only make shrubs.

Like applying stencil onto canvas and tweaking size and rotation of stencil. I think i saw that somewhere but than again maybe i mixed something:confused:

So guys I know I haven't posted much in these past few weeks. I am still busy and hard at work making the rpg tutorial. As well I am getting ready for exams in 2 weeks :). So anyhow I setup a website where I will be showing off all of my projects but I also invite all of you to come and join if you want. I'm setting up this website to also help answer UDK questions as well as other game development related questions.
http://thumbaxisstudios.com/community/index.php
I know the forum is still really empty and bland, and well crappy. But I hope to have a new theme and everything up shortly. Also the homepage has nothing on it but an HTML page that says test. But all of that will be fixed soon.
Thanks,
Raven
ALSO,
All of my videos are free to be used on any website. Lately I have gotten alot of messages about people wanting to use my videos on there site. I have no problem. However all I ask is that you don't take credit for making the video's. You don't have to credit me just don't embed it and say the tutorial was made by you.

So today the new build came out and I made a quick intro on using godrays. The content blog covered pretty much how to do it however I went on ahead and made one anyways for new people to the UDK. Who may/may not know enough to setup a directional light :).
Godrays/Light Shafts Tutorial Using Directional Lighting

on that note I have a forum as well I setup on my site. Think I made a post a few months back. If you guys have any questions about my video tutorials. Please please please post your question on my site. There are many reasons for this.
1) The new youtube comment layout is horrible for answering questions
2) Stuff get's pretty buried in youtube so questions somebody may have already answered may be 5 pages back.
3) I can sticky common questions so people can read and instantly know how to fix there problems and not have to wait for long reply's

Well that sums up this post I'm back and you can expect more advanced tutorials now :).
Thanks, Raven. Your tutorials are very useful and cognitive:)

Hey, I have just started learning UDK and game Development in the past 2 days, and I just want to say thank you all your videos were great and I can wait for the RPG Dev Videos, I am finishing up the 3DBuzz videos and started watching the the Eat3d video but I have to say yours are better than the Eat3D Introduction videos which I regret buying now when compared to how you explain.
Nice and Simple thank you.
To anyone reading this I reccomend you watch Raven's videos then go through the 3DBuzz videos, but skip the first 34 videos of the user interface introduction. Raven provides a great base to build on top of.
BTW your Teleporter and Kismet video links are flipped.

thankyou :)
hey I too am interested in the RPG tutorials. What do you think the percentage is of the first installment completion? I’m trying to get inventory working similar to NWN2 and would love your expertise. I’m working with sapitu atm but trying to equip inventory using sockets has just been crazy.

Upcoming tutorial:
Creating an RPG in the UDK From Start to Finish.
RPG as in role Playing game? Or RPG as in Rocket Propelled Grenade?
Honestly I could go either way with that...

Hey guys,
I have been working on the RPG tutorial series. I have the assets I need now. So all I have to do before I can begin releasing parts of the RPG tutorial series is I have to release a few more standalone tutorials so people will have full understanding of the RPG series. As it's not as hands on as some of my other tutorials. So all I have to do is release a basic intro into UnrealScript and after that I will slowly begin to unveil the RPG tutorial series :).
I also have a few other tutorials I hope to have done this weekend if I can find time. They are a Day/Night cycle using kismet and matinee, A introduction to the material editor(Have been meaning to make this one for a long time.) As well as continue and progress further with my kismet series. With any luck I'll some of this up tonight or at least by Sunday.
Second thing on my list is I am looking for an artist who would be willing to help me out with my tutorials. I make tutorials for other game engines as well however most of those already have alot of assets to work with. So if anybody here has any free time and your experienced with photoshop and 3dsmax. Or any variant of the two. Send me a pm, email or add me on msn. So we can work something out. Currently what has been delaying me with all of my tutorials is lack of art. I know I can use stock UDK artwork but where's the fun in that :P.

theres a thread about the day/night cycle but its nothing in depth and not a full tutorial and its just bits and pieces everywhere. i would and i would say many others would really like a tutorial on how to make a pleasant looking day/night cycle.

With the June UDK Beta, the moving sun is super easy with basic Matinee.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mURVvMrCSTA
1. Just use the new Procedural Skydome.
2. Add Actor > Add the dominant movable directional light.
3. Set up a Matinee sequence in Kismet to change the location of the movable directional light. Set the Matinee to play upon Level Loaded. Set the Matinee to Play after being Completed (so the sun goes around and around). Set the Movable directional light (the Sun) as the Matinee Object. Open Matinee, move your Sun to the noon 6AM position and add a key frame. Move the sun to about the 8 or 9am position and add another key Frame. You only need about 7-8 keys and it looks great.
The longer your Matinee is and the more frames you have, the longer your day and night cycle is going to be.
I've only spent about an hour on the new skydome, so if you get the stars to come out at night, let me know. :)

Just use the new Procedural Skydome.I've looked on UDN, Google and all over the place, but there seems to be no documentation as to how to make use of this.
All the you mentioned is easy enough to figure out and do, If not there is documents about that stuff online somewhere. But the ProcSky? Oh hell no. All you get is the knowledge it's there and that it being used. That is it...
hehehe.
Okay done *****ing. Resuming Student mode...

I might making an entire tutorial on animation a character with body and facial animations. Would be a fairly large tutorial. Try googling for some. I will show how to import into the UDK but not sure I am gonna do a fully blown tutorial like that.
Did you make it? I'm mostly concerned with the process of getting the basic animations working, I can import the psk and psa but the animtree bit has me a bit thrown, still reading on it but if you already made a tut on this aspect, could you post a link to that?(I checked your youtube channel but didn't see one)
Thanks :)

I mean to offend anybody but I think that asking for an RPG tutorial is a little bit too much. If you don't have a rough idea on how to accomplish that why don't you practice a little bit more with udk before trying to make a game type that usually requires a team and good programming skills.

you are probably right, but if you look from the other side, a tutorial about creating a different style of game covers all the tutorials on this page and even more, and gives learners all the knowledge they need for majority of the engine.
I'm sorry but the documentation is poorly written, with almost no examples on how to use pieces of code, or why is that code written like that, etc.
We are not all scientists, game developers working in the industry for 10-15 years like some people here.
We are trying to learn just for the sake of it, because it's fun and because it's interesting.

I understand I'm artsit and I'm way more confortable using zbrush or maya than visual studio. I checked raven's youtube page and I don't think It's going to happened anytime soon (or ever). You better look into tutorial and do small games where you can learn from.
here a good place to start

Yip, that link is usefull, tx.
I suppose what I was looking for in the RPG tutorial, was actually how to set up an RPG in UDK. I can do most of the other stuff, made some maps for ut3, its just getting everything to work together for an RPG.
I understand it is a big task, no doubt. How about breaking it up in parts, starting with the basics of just setting it up, and lets work from there. All the other stuff I suppose could be found on seperate tutorials.
At least thats what I was expecting. Any other ideas?

Really looking forward to the RPG one, making a FPSRPG style game and could really use guides on how to make magic and spells (the XP system is being handled by someone else on the team who knows what he is doing)
Great guides, can't wait for the rest! :)
