Hi,
Just joined, so please go easy on me.
I have been looking for an SDK to build a Virtual World (rather than a game), and it looks as if the URE3 could be just the thing. I have previous experience with Opensim and the Blue Mars SDK (based on the CryEngine2). Could some kind soul answer the following basic questions for me:
1. Does the SDK consist only of World creation tools, or does it also include client/server software? There is no point in creating a great Virtual World if it then cannot be hosted on a server and other users log into it with their viewer (client).
2. Does the SDK include tools to enable avatar/actor flying and teleportation?
3. Has anyone created a Virtual World already with the URE3 that you know of?
Many thanks

Just by taking a look at the games created with this engine might answer these questions. ;)
But yes, all of those are doable as far as I know, but the networking side might hinder a bit, as UE3 wasn't primarily made to host MMO games. Doable, but not sure how easy. :)

Well I would like to explore the possibilities of using the UDK to create a hosted Virtual World (starting with just one region/level/city).
If anyone would like to join me in a small proof-of-concept project, I would be pleased to hear from you.

I'm new to all of this, but for testing the client>server I think it's simply a case of running a dedicated server and then giving your friends your IP address. They then run the game and bring up the console (tilde key) and enter the command 'Open <your IP address>'
To run a dedicated server on your machine you can run the Frontend program that comes with the UDK and set the server type option to 'Dedicated' and then press the blue 'Server' button. Or alternatively you could run a 'Listen' server which looks like it'll allow you to play and serve at the same time.
Now whether you can create a virtual world will depend on what your definition of 'virtual world' is. :)
But if you consider Blue Mars to be a virtual world then I don't see any reason why you can't do the same with the UDK.

Hello Rock, our little research on the subject going well eh? More interested people who have great interest in Second Life tech would be nice to join our project to research the UDK for this purpose. Join uS!

Hi Gus,
Yeah, all those tests with yourself and ridders are finally paying off. Feeling a whole lot better after today's successes!
After we have completed the remaining networking tests we can then start to concentrate on creating maps/terrain/etc, and serving them.
Finally feeling productive :)

Hi,
I am also interested in many of the questions Rock has raised. I would also like to find a way to use unreal as the physics engine for opensim in 64 bit mode so I can stop wasting resources and get my grid up to production status.
