Hi there. I'm a high school student wanting to explore game design. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about it! As a result, while trying to make a simple ground floor in UDK (using this written tutorial: http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/CreatingLevels.html), I got this error when trying to build geometry (on the "Playing The Level" step on the tutorual).

It read thus:

Level: <none>
Actor: <none>
Message: Paths need to be rebuilt!

Level: Package_0
Actor: WordInfo_0
Message: Maps need lighting rebuilt!

Level: Package_0
Actor: WordInfo_0
Message: Map should have KillZ set.

Level: Package_0
Actor: Brush_1
Message: Brush_1 : Brush has NULL material refernce(s)

Level: Package_0
Actor: PlayerStart_o
Message: Nav_PlayerStart_0 has an invalid GUID. You may need to rebuild paths.

Note that the above error info was found under the "Map Check" window that popped up when I clicked the "Build Geometry" button.

Edit:

Were you running the installer, running a game, or running the editor : The editor
What exactly were you doing when you saw the problem? : Trying to build geometry after placing a Point Light and Player Start on the Ground floor
What were you trying to do? : Ultimately, creating a ground floor

Your OS information : Windows Vista Ultimate Service Pack 2. 32-Bit OS.

Your PC specs : Radeon Sapphire 2600 XT video card. 3 G RAM. Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80 GHz

you probably already solved this, but if you haven't, look for the "Build All" button.

Thank you - this worked! :)

You described and presented your problem well in your description and I am glad someone could help you... However, putting "(urgent)" in front of the title will annoy people. And "Need help" is quite vague. A good title for your post will help you get quality replies. Looks like you got a freebie this time :D

(No offense at all is intended in this. Just some advice, especially before one of the veterans, who have a reputation for being ornery, come by and grumble at you)
