Mine is running just fine. I'll spend some time tonight trying to pinpoint the issue and figure out why some of us can run it while others can't. I'll post back here if I find anything.

I'll rule out Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, as I'm using it and have no issues. The issue may be related to something like Visual Studio redistributables.

it runs on my Vista 32, so i think that 64bit system can be cause of problems. The problem is exactly with Win32 folders which are in other place in 64bit systems :).

I'd just like to say that today SpeedTree Modeler loaded perfectly, so I'd suggest those with the error to occasionally try loading the program again just in-case (as for me) it starts working.
Something really weird going on with this thing :)

I wouldn't worry about it - I've just tried turning off UAC and restarting, and it doesn't make any difference, so it's something unrelated to this :)

Hi,
I'm the lead developer of the SpeedTree Modeler and I'd like everyone to know that we're trying to track this down.
We been able to produce similar errors when running 64 bit Windows 7 but only when the region setting is something other than the U.S. Are any of you that are experiencing this problem using a non-U.S. region setting? Does switching to U.S. fix the problem?
I'm not advocating that as the permanent solution but I'd like to make sure we're on the right track.
Thanks,
Michael Sechrest

I am using a non-U.S. region setting, I'm using "English (United Kingdom)". I have just tried changing all my settings to the US settings however, and even after a reboot it still crashes. I still get the same error as chiefwhosm when I attach to the process using Visual C++.
The actual text of the dialog boxes are:
An unexpected error occured[sic] while initializing. Please contact support@speedtree.com
When that is dismissed you get the following dialog (which in turn produces the exception in the Visual C++ log provided by chiefwhosm):
An invalid argument was encountered.
I can't find any log files to provide, but I can give the output from 'SystemInformation.exe', though it looks to primarily be graphics card support, so it may not be of much use. Either way it's available at:

I had and still have U.S. region setup in 64b Win7 with a few custom settings like euro for currency. Speedtree worked for me after I have installed UDK, the next day it didn't work. Only thing that I remember I did is to change drivers for my 260GTX from 191.07 to 195.39 (beta). If you think this could be the cause, I could try to unistall and go back to those older drivers.

I have a new install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit (US-Region) and the SpeedTree Editor is running fine. I have the latest Nvidia drivers installed for a GTX260 (191.07).
I had to install some MS-VC++ updates for other programs...maybe some of those are required?
Here's what I have installed;
http://www.nawtek.com/MS-VC++Updates.jpg
also Microsoft XNA Redistributable 3.1
I hope this helps.

Unfortunately that didn't help. I did a normal unistall through Add remove and reinstalled Drivers, PhysX and nVidia Sterreoscopic 3D Driver.
Maybe a list of stuff that I have installed after UDK could help to find something suspicious. I will leave out programs which shouldn't do much mess.
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable (x64) - I think that was with 3dsmax9
Microsoft Chart Controls for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable
OMP Index Reference Increment (64b) - something from Autodesk
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.17
NVIDIA CUDA Toolkit
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 ATL Update kb973923 - x64 8.0.50727.4053
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.4148
It would be great if that could help somehow.

It might be nvidia , I have hd 4850 and it is running fine for me . Perhaps speedtree uses some extension , or more simple put epic just look over this bug . It seems like there hasn't been a problem on a 32 bit platform . That is why this is still in beta stage . Try different types of standard run times I got net. frame work visual s rt , I don't have a problem , it also could be because I am running on a 32 bit plat form . Hi,
Sorry for the delay in responding but I didn't have any news until now. We've found and corrected the problem thanks is no small part to board member aeonflame.
It's related to the tablet device interface on 64 bit machines but there's no quick workaround. It takes a new version of the Modeler which will be available in the next UDK update.
Thanks for everyone's help tracking this down!

Sorry if this is old info, we have been having the same issue and found that by re-installing the drivers that came with the tablet (most likely a year old now) speedtree launches fine, the issue seems to be with the newer wacaom drivers.
We've had the issue (with wacom drivers) on both 64 and 32 bit machines.

I think i know what engine you are reffering to since I also had that problem with it and it was the wacom that made that one crash. Although disabling some windows settings with tablet devices made that editor not crash anymore.
Anyhow...
I also have the problems with the SpeedTree modeler. I'm using win 7 ultimate 64-bit, 8bit ram, gf260gtx quadcore 6600 and Cintiq 12wx.
I'll try to downgrade my wacom drivers and see if it works.

I have found as well that my tablet driver was causing the issue. I recently got a new bamboo pen & touch tablet so that I could work with my notebook out of home as well (I normally use a cintiq which cannot be carried easily and still works very well using old drivers). By uninstalling that driver, there was no problem starting the modeller.
Thanks guys! I was itching to try out the speedtree engine as soon as I got wind of it (during the time it was still only used by a handful of games) and now that it is free (and working!) I feel that my artistic urges will be satisfied better than ever. I am an avid lover of nature, but that is such a chore to make in 3D packages...

I made a temporary fix for the Windows 7 x64 issue, it skips the internal "Invalid register access" error and breaks the infinite loop. It might fix problems on other issues as well. Hopefully it's ok to link to this kind of content.
To apply the fix replace the C:\UDK\UDK-2009-12\Binaries\SpeedTreeModeler\EyeCommon.dll with the version downloadable from below.

I have been trying to get SpeedTree Modeler to load for hours with no luck. Tried older, and newer Nvidia drivers for my GTX 295. Tried different Wacom drivers too. No luck. I do have Speed Tree working on another computer with an older single GPU card, and also at work on my ATi V8700, but neither of those other two computers have Wacom's attached. I tried uninstalling my Wacom software completly, and that didn't change anything. SpeedTree Modeler just partially loads, and is stuck in a non-responsive state.
I also tried disabling SLI mode. Why is this still a problem? I see posts back to 2009 on SpeedTree not working because of Wacom drivers!
I'm on Windows 7 64-bit SP1, with a MSI GTX 295 video card, and the latest UDK (June 2011).

I don't think it's due to Wacom, I have one too, no problems here.

You are correct. I'm still doing testing, but It is starting to feel more and more like a hardware/driver glitch.
I have an OCZ RevoDrive SSD in the secondary PCIe Slot directly below the video card (I am suspecting this might be the problem, but still need to do a test).
I did boot up an old Vista hard drive that didn't have the RevoDrive driver installed, and SpeedTree worked fine, so thats why I am suspecting it might be the RevoDrive driver.
I'm going to try uninstalling the RevoDrive driver, which is a RAID driver, and see if that helps. I might also try re-installing Windows 7 from scratch.
Does this partial Dump File make any sence to anyone?

My best bet would be the EyeCommon.dll issue several people including me have had. Try replacing your EyeCommon.dll, I think in the UDK or Speedtree directory, with the one from this link: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=I3MZ3BT8
It's from this thread and is apparently a very old version of the DLL: http://forums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=761744

Thanks so Much!!! It works now. I hope they incorporate this fix into the next UDK. I could have saved 9 hours of my time.

I have the solution,well it worked for me when it used to crash,download this http://www.megaupload.com/?d=84L1DHFC and go to the SpeedtreeModeler FOlder in the UDK(date)/Binaries/SpeedTreeModeler/and replace the Eyecommon.dll with the one you downloaded. It should work now.
CRAP you beat me to it,didnt see the post from before.

I think I've commented on it and even contacted SpeedTree about it, but I guess Epic doesn't want to include an old DLL version, and they presumably are not upgrading SpeedTree for now (I don't know if the newer versions have it fixed), so it's been broken for a while. I'm glad the fix worked for you though!

I just tested the July 2011 build, and this is still broken. Using the other EyeCommon.dll still fixes it. :)
