UDK is probably the best news the indie community and modders get since the release of quake's engines source codes !
Epic game is the best company for game engines and arts, and one of the best in game design. But now it will (I hope so) be the best friend of all people over the world who want to build games !
It's a new time for modders !
Thank you very much Epic Games !

I have to admit that I am excited as hell that this has happened. I have worked with unreal engine ever since the very first unreal. :)
This engine, even when compared to every other engine I have worked with both professionally and in my spare time, is easily one of my favorite engines. This really makes me happy!
I see you guys also have a slick new lighting system for super sharp shadows/radiosity, and the new generic browser functionality is sweet as hell! I cannot wait to dive in and learn what other amazing things you have updated since the last iteration of your engine I have worked with.
You guys ROCK!! :)
I have to admit though, I am glad I was not one of the many smaller scale engine developers out there right now....

Not simply the fact that it's been released at a practically industry-competent level for free, but also that it will continue to be kept up to date, is monumental for independent game designers as well as for people who have never had the chance to try out game creation before now.
Whatever would compel a company to do this with their prized engine is beyond me, but I have a feeling Epic just won over a massive amount of new fans in a matter of hours.
Not to mention, I can't wait to see the quality of games that start to be produced now

Amazing, just awesome.
Am not an Unreal user, am a game programmer working with Unity engine.
This awesome engine just got my attention and thus all of my employees. :)
Cheers from Montreal.

This is the best thing since the invention of the wheel.
So awesome that finally a huge company looks down to us little people and give us a chance to work with next gen technology.
Thanks tons :)

Thank you thank you thank you thank you Epic Games!
I can FINALLY make the leap from 2D and start dabbling in making 3D games. I am more of an artist than a programmer, I cannot make heads or tails of source codes, but all-in-one SDKs are just what the doctor ordered.
Expect an increase in shovelware though as projects that would never have been green-lighted by investors will get developed anyway, then shopped around for publishers. But at the same time, the field is wide open for anyone with a brilliant idea to showcase a pilot project which could become the next original full-fledged IP. The industry is tired of sequels.

Very stoked. Thought it was amazing that Unity's Indie edition went free within the last 2 weeks, and A7's Extra edition is going free soon as a direct response.
This just blew those announcements out of the water. I'm very keen to dabble in it, and see how easy it is to accomplish similar tasks with the different engines.
No-doubt UDK is the most complete solution :)

Thank you very much Epic!
I was using the UT3 Editor and did some art assets last year, but now is different...
I'm in the last year at University, I hope I can do the project in UDK, previously I was using Unity.
Brazilian guys/gals became shocked o.O
Thanks !

Thank you epic!! Not in my wildest dreams would I have thought that this day would ever come. Giving every single Indie this much power is the equivalent of having everyone in my town driving ferraris and Lamborghinis!
PS: Commercial license looks VERY reasonable as well!

Total agreement. Excellent move. The only thing I'd like to see is a some more documentation on setting up a total conversion. The Whizzle documentation is great, but it would be nice to see more information, such as a the actual project ready to load into the UDK :)

I'm currently working with the engine in it's UT3 state for my university, and this just blew me away. I don't think we can fully understand the implications this will have to indie development and not least spreading the knowledge of what goes into game creation. And it's going to be updated with new builds regularly you say? Extraordinary, fantastic news! :D

Agreed I honestly think this will be a time we have to remember =D. Me and my friends were told a rumor of his and couldn't wait to get home, so we hacked down our schools internet blocker and marveled for the 45 mins of our lunch time just reading all of the different reviews and all of the coverage we could find =D. I'm already at work now =D.

Thank you! I've repeatedly pinched myself and it's taken a couple of days to sink in!
My uni used UT3 engine as a teaching tool for game design and I also mod. Very encouraging news!

Thank you very much Epic !
Thanks to you, without the UDK, I would again be there to create my 3D engine ! :D
(Magad, is a crazy and difficult work to create own game engine ! :o )
haha, I always thought UDK is an "impossible" software. Now it become true.
But "how should I study it" becoming my another topic.
