I actually use Vista 64 SP2 — which is the recommended system, but when I run the editor, the splash screen says "32 bit". Is there a way to launch a 64-bit version of UDK that I'm missing?

I'm afraid the November 2009 version of the UDK only comes with 32 bit binaries.

But there are plans for a 64-bit version in one of the upcoming releases?

Ah ... well, thanks for the quick response!
Will keep and eye out for future versions — would guess it could help a lot with lighting build ... but that seems to be much faster already!

Way to go, Epic!

If you have several computers available you could always add them as agents in Swarm and do a cluster build for the lighting. ;)

I actually forgot to mention that the lightmass client is a 64 bit application... d'oh!

As of the MAY 2010 build, the UDK editor will run in 64 bit on 64 bit operating systems.

yay to that. I guess I have enough reason to move to Win7 64-bit now

To run 64bit version don't you just change your start up path to the Win64 directory?

C:\UDK\UDK-2010-12\Binaries\Win64\UDK.exe editor

That's what I did and it runs with the Unreal Development Kit (64-bit, DX9) tag in the menu bar. What about running it with DX11? My video card supports DX11, but I haven't looked to change my UDK Editor to use it. Not sure if it's worth it, since I'm still learning UDK.
