Are you using Windows 7 and installing to the default c:\UDK directory? If so, do you have a d: drive? Try installing to d:\UDK.

usin windows 7, installing another drive did not solve the problem. tired installing as admin.

edit: installing as admin to a drive other than c solved the problem.

Just FYI i fixed it, the install i used was bugged or corrupted so i downloaded another one from a different site (i think bugged because they had the same file size). The 1st one i downloaded from was from here: http://udk.com/download.html the nvidia one, that didnt work, i then downloaded from gamershell and that worked fine.

yes nvidia one seems to be errornous one. but installing it to drive othre than c with admin permitions works anyway.

I'm on a 32-bit Windows 7 machine, and I only have 1 drive. I don't really want to have to partition it just to install a single piece of software. I've tried running it as an administrator, and installing into a few different directories with no luck. I can debug the installation to the point of discovering that it throws an UnathorizedException when trying to install files, so it's as if the installation doesn't have access to the directory. Any workarounds?

getting this " VCRedist x86 failed to install" as well on xp 32bit

Getting it here too, Win7 x64. If i use 7-Zip to extract the install then extract the preRec package and run them manually I get no errors.

Also SpeedTreeModeler just hangs on start-up with only half the UI rendered.

I'm not sure if this will work, but it's worth a try.

You could try the SUBST command.

Start Menu > Run... > subst x: c:\

This will create a "drive" (X) with the specified path (C:\)

Then try to install to that. It might not work, though, but try it out.

Try downloading it from here: http://www.gamershell.com/download_52740.shtml that fixed it for me.

Ok guys i think i know how to fix this, so i have win7 ultimate x64 on my desktop and the exact same version but x32 on my laptop , last night i downloaded the exe like 5 times from all those sites mentioned and run it x64 but none of that worked , and i tried all the run as admin and compability options.
But when i ran the same exe on my laptop it installed perfectly without using any compability or anything else , just double clicked.
But today i installed it on x64 as well

so here is the fix:
Just as someone (sry dont remember your name ) in this thread said type this
Start Menu > Run... > subst x: c:\
this will make a x partition
try to install the udk at x:\ at the default folder that the program has (x:\UDK\UDK-2009-11 it might stop and say it doesnt respond,if it does try again with the c and so on
that got it working for me

Tried a subst and still the same problem. I had already tried setting up a VHD in diskmanager to have a dedicated UDK drive, that didn't work.

Next step.... Downloading from Gamershell...

UPDATE: That didn't work, same problem on new download...

hmm i managed to install udk but now i downloaded Whizzle which uses the same udk installer and there are the same problems, can't install. The problem is not that the file is corrupted but the udk installer is buged.

I have the same problem.

Running 64 bit Vista here and UDK crashes randomly while installing every single time.

I've dl'd it from several different mirrors (nvidia, gamershell) and I've also tried Running it as Administrator and still get the same crashes.

I turned off UAC, rebooted and still got the same crashes during the install.

Then I noticed a windows update that was badgering me to be downloaded and installed... Success, the installation finally worked after getting Vista updated.

I'm getting the same issue on a Vista 64 system, though the hangup and auto-exit happens at a installbin.dll or something like that. I tried installing as admin but have not used the partition method. I'm installing the gamershell version to see if there are differences.

Update:
It seems that the installer crashes at arbitrary times for me. The Gamershell version stopped at:
MSChart/1036/SPInstallerResources.dll
Step 2/4 : PlayerX (or something of the sort. It was the second file.)

Interestingly enough, when installing directly to the default C Drive area, it got a lot further along than installing to a folder on the desktop. Could this be something that affects the install?

Update X2:
Success! Running this as an admin and isntalling to the default folder appears to have been good. Maybe it was the intensity of my glare as I stared at the green download bars...

Ok I'm running XP Pro SP3, the installer crashes at different times with the windows error message: "UnSetup has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."with the options to send an error report or not.
I'm installing to the default directory and even tried to install directly to another drive with no luck.
Any ideas?

Anyone answer about this yet? The installer crashes out for me about halfway through, I've redownloaded it from 3 different sites.

Shockingly, I reinstalled successfully this weekend without changing anything from the previous install. I would say, try, try again.

Also, the new browser is fancy but confusing. Gonna take a bit to get used to it.

Did you reboot between not working and working? Any pending Windows Updates blocking?

reboot - yes after the fail (though not on purpose)

windows updates - no and I have auto updates turned off.

Total of two tries.

I had the issue of reaching various points of the installation and the installer failing, not responding.

The following is my information and configuration that resulted in a successful installation:
Windows 7 RC Build 7100
Installed to default directory on C drive
Run as administrator
Downloaded from Gamershell
UAC turned off
No pending Windows updates
Set compatibility mode to Windows Vista

I did NOT test the following methods:
Installing to another drive/directory
Subst command

Note: The compatibility mode idea came from the post quoted below from
http://forums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=705817&page=2

I tried Windows Vista SP2 mode, but it failed. I was successful with plain Windows Vista compatibility mode.

Windows 7 x86 here. The installer was constantly generating the "Stopped responding" crash. This was fixed by setting the installer to windows vista compatibility. No problems since then.

Maybe it was the intensity of my glare as I stared at the green download bars...
That is a possibility as well since I stared it down in disbelief the time it succeeded.

I hope everyone is able to get UDK installed!

Ok I had A LOT of problems installing the UDK on my machine (vista 64bit with all current updates). Here's how I finally got it to work. I installed all the prerequisites and rebooted. Also, despite the install never completing, a UDK folder with a lot of files had been created which I didn't see. I had to delete this file, then reboot, then it worked.

My installer crashes while installing.
I have Windows 7 64 bit

My solution :

- Go to properties of installer
- Got to compatability tab
- Put on the 'Run this program in compatibily mode for: Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)'
- And then run this exe as a administrator.
