View Full Version : Upload so slow we will miss deadline!?

Salutations Epic Games,
My team has slaved night and day for months on end for this opportunity, we scheduled over 4 hours for upload time. It is now estimated to take 6 hours. There's absolutely nothing we can do here in Australia about it.
My question is do you check the date stamp somehow on the initial upload start time oo the completed upload time.
Or, if not is there seriously nothing our devastated team can do?
Thank you for any time / assistance you can spare,
Dylan Rayner

Our (Planetstorm) upload has failed once already, and the rate was slow and unsteady during it. Shame these issues were not fixed after all- or there's a massive load of entries :D

I'd imagine it's the server load... there is only a few hours left and imagine the number of people trying to submit. I'd say be patient and keep trying. Good luck :)

We only uploaded a launcher which redirects to a download-page... saves this trouble, and we can have a nice updater-functionality so people always play the latest build.

Err, I think for the contest you have to upload a build, not a redirect launcher.

Well how much time is left now and can you submit an updated version of your work?

I don't see the difference between an auto-updater/launcher which downloads the actual mod, and the actual mod.
The end result is the same, with the added benefit that the auto-updater always forces you to have the latest version. Saves the Epic guys from check for new versions.
Anyway, I got an email from IGN that they wanted the real build. But now it's closed

yeah, i think the idea was that you needed to upload the build so they could verify that the judged content was submitted during the contest timeframe to prevent people sneakily updating content after the fact.

The EULAs talk about submission, not 'build'. So I dunno. A machinima also isn't a build, it's a movie. We'll see.

Same here. My upload was finished in 10-15 mins after the deadline.

It isn't possible to upload files after the deadline anyway, so I think it's ok when you get this e-mail:

You can say that it's a build in some way. You can't update it after phase is over.

The upload issues were looked at and adjustment where made by offering more bandwidth for users. My upload speeds where 10x faster than Phase 3. It is hard to create a scenario with dozens of people from various countries and ISPs concurrently uploading files. Most of the issues are from contestants overseas and bigger files.
If you had upload issues contact me at cpham@ign.com. If you have any file updates in the future or want a screenshot etc you can also email me next week when I have more bandwidth.

But... they won't be judged will they? By "post contest" you mean post judging correct?

Well I only got around 100k uploading my submisssion but that wasn't my only problem.
I thought I only had around an hour to go and wasn't quite finished the level I was going to submit.
Finished the level and in my panic to get it submitted I renamed the file, redid the ini file and zipped it up and posted it.
:(Turns out I did the wrong build of the level, I did DM-Necrosis11 instead of DM-Necrosis11a.
Also turns out I had around 10 more hours up my sleeve so I didn't quite need to rush like I did.
A countdown clock on the MSUC site would have been nice.
Anyway I have now uploaded the correct build of the level to Fileplanet (http://www.fileplanet.com/204664/200000/fileinfo/DM-Necrosis)

This thread looks a lot like my college classes around midterm time. Serously though, would it kill you guys to just update it a day earlier, haha? There's months of work on the line here, 1 day of work isn't going to make or break your entery (or shouldn't if know when it's due, hell the deadline got extended a week :P)
I submit a day early and haven't gotten any links or confirmation emails. Color me worried.

For plenty of people one day might make or break it...and given that months of work are on the line, I'm glad Epic is cool enough to allow extra room to maneuver

As it stands my teams still trying to get our submission in :/ Crowl has mentioned an FTP we can use if all else fails. Anyone got any details on this FTP?

I personally do not approve of submitting an updater. Not only does it give an unfair edge in the competition, it also means judges might not be playing the same version (as I assume they all don't play the same entry at the same time), which could be troublesome.

Auto updaters are very lame and very unfair.
Release earlier if you want the time to fix things, rather than one hour before the deadline of the very last phase?

aaaah snap, just read i put the wrong link into the archive, it loads the wrong map if you start the mod, oh man that sucks so much, besides the fixes we are doing now
that would really be a showbreaker if it loads the wrong map maaaaaaan i could cry :/
the link loads dm-001 which is a dummymap not dm-000 which is newer and less buggy, god damn

Agree totally, otherwise an updater basically invalidates the idea of a deadline, because then a deadline doesn't actually mean anything. I'm sure Epic will come up with a fair solution to this. ;)

Exactly. It's most likely against the rules anyway. Otherwise that wouldn't make sense.

Considering the main map is indeed in the file you uploaded, it's simply not loading that one maybe you can catch a break. You may want to send a message to the moderator of this forums asking if they can simply change the 1 to a 0, i don't think that would be to big a deal, the works all there in the upload, you're simply giving them the heads up to look at it.

For the normal people who download it, it's useful. Epic can still test the 'MSUC build'. We gave the normal, static link of our 1.0a Alpha version to Epic, so that's all handled. :)
