View Full Version : How to extract cache files (not maps) do you dont have to dl each time

Ok,
We all know that we can use the Cache cleaner or UT3 tweaker to extract the custom map files from the cache folder, but how does one get the other files from the cache folder?
The files I am talking about are things like custom weapons on a server you play on, server advertisements, custom this or that....... just so you dont have to re-dl custom content each time you connect.

I remember i've read a discussion about that and it seemed to be harder than previous UTs to convert mutators and modes from your cache not sure if something is on the work though... the only option is you download the stuff yourself and install them.

I came to this thread thinking the answer was here... Oh well, at least I'm not the only one. I hope they make a keeper utility like cache converter. That would be soooooooo sweet!

Are you guys saying no cache convertor exists for UT3? ...that's kind of bizarre.

There is a cache text file in the Cache folder where the custom content is. It has all of the cross reference info to convert the file.
To avoid having to keep re-downloading maps, go to your UTEngine.ini file and set StaleCacheDays=99999 MaxStaleCacheSize=99999 MaxOverallCacheSize=99999.

Bersy, there are several cache converters for maps... we're talking about one for muts/mods... as of yet there is'nt one afaik.

This is an option but does not solve the current problem. We still a converter that recognizes the mutators and mods so we can place them in the right directory so they load faster.
There are some mods that even though you have them in your cache, they DL everytime you connect to servers.

I use cache converter by Brad G, it is excellent. There is another by UNK that I hear works well... However they only work for maps.

Yeah, you can either convert the files and put them in your custom maps folder, or you can make the UTEngine.ini file mod. Either one will keep you from having to re-download the map.

Two reasons i didnt extract anything but maps in my UT3Utility
1. The other files are usually quite small
2. Also my extract file archive is full of enough maps i dont really want, never mind a whole load of other small and easily donwloadable files.
You only need to download a weapon mod etc everytime u reload windows, so its not that big an issue.

Hey,
Good to hear a creator of one of the two more common UT3 cache applications...... can you make an update so it WILL convert mod and other files from the cache and put in the correct directories?
The small files like you said (like server ads and other 1 to 100k files) that servers make you download each time is not a huge deal BUT very annoying EVERY time you connect.
But there are other files you are not considering. UTComp is commonly run on servers, that is a little bigger. Then there are servers with custom weapons and custom vehicles.... they ARE much bigger. Trust me, if you have to down load 20+ files to play on a custom server and it takes you 5 to 10 minutes to get all the files, then have to dl them AGAIN the next time, it kills the server.
If people could get those files the 1 time and extract them, much better.

Another reason why it would be nice to be able to install mutators etc. from the cache is this:
If you want to play back a demo that was recorded on a server with certain mutators (e.g. utcomp), it seems that the demo won't play unless you have installed a subset of the packages that the server had.
For example, to play back a demo recently, I had to install one of the three files that makes up utcomp v3.31, because the server on which I had recorded the demo used that version of utcomp.
I think it's rather difficult to write a program that automatically takes cached files and puts them in the right places, and Epic would need to do something to make it possible, like change their cache.ini format to provide sufficient information to determine where a file should be installed.

I imagine the converter creators would be more than happy to make their programs do this.
The problem lies into how to tell what are .u and what are .upk. The other problem with converting mods/muts is that they always need a .ini file, which isn't pushed by the server.
Your best bet if your wanting to run a specific mod/mutator offline, is to download them from the forums and install them.
The mutators are a fraction the size of some of the larger maps.

Not looking to get the ini file to run the mods/mut offline. If I wanted to do that I would dl that from the forums here.
If I connect to a server and play a map, and then they load in a custom map (that I have) but that map required 20+ little files of 500K to 3 Meg for example for custom textures, vehicles, weapons, etc, then I have to dl all the time and it is like 5 min before you enter....
Places that run a sniper mod, or beer drinkers with whacky weapons, jump mods, etc

This works with all the files:
