View Full Version : Any way to have a (pretty) low ping on US servers from EU?

Hey guys,
Today I played on a US server because there were not many EU servers with players (4 am).
My ping was 200 ms.
Usually, I have a ping around 110 ms on EU servers (Epic - 32 players).
I just want to know if there is theoretically a way to have a good ping on US servers if I would have a new connection.
Example:
Current connection: EU servers - ping around 110 ms
If I would have a new connection and would have a ping around 50 ms (no idea if it's even possible for full Warfare servers :P ),
would this automatically mean I would have at least 140 ms to a US server?
Or would this still be impossible because of the long distance?
Does anybody from EU have a ping of around 140 ms or even less to US servers?

Best ping I have in US is 140 on one DM (AREA 51) and Duel (East Coast) server in NY, on beer drinkers TDM I have 155-160, and on rest 170>, Warfare 170-230 depending of the number of players on the server.
Location: Serbia (so I'm actually further from the servers that you two), connecton type: cable (1536/128 Kb/s, a month ago I had same ping with 256 upload).

I can get 110 on a dm server in england. I live 30 minutes from the east coast in the usa. But in euro warfare servers Im lucky to get 150, normally 180.
Getting a faster internet connection (mine is 10-20 mb/sec) will improve your ping, but probably not by a whole lot. Its like driving a viper in a traffic jam, how fast you can go is limited by the amount of people crowding the line.

I see.
Okay, I think 150 ms would be ok for me.
I mean US servers are only if I can't find good EU servers :)
There is a connection type in Germany called "Kabel Deutschland".
Its bandwidth is until 32 MBit/s (maybe there are also faster versions).
Friends of mine who have it have ping of 15 ms.
But that has nothing to do with UT3, their lowest ping could be 15 ms, my lowest ping (dsl 2000) could be 60 ms.
For example
ping www.google.de

a bigger bandwidth wont improve neccessarily your ping. the ping is calculated by several factors from node to node: tproc (processing time), tprop (propagate, d/v with d distance in metres and v velocity), tqueue, ttrans (transmission, packet size in bits / data rate in bits). best ping is probably on an east coast server in new york and will get a lot worser towards west coast. the only way to improve it, is changing your ISP to s.o. who is known for being very fast. in the past it was very often QDSL (QSC) but that may have changed. also check out that you dont have something like interleaving (t-online e.g.), u have to pay a stinking buck to activate fastpath there but its worth it. an indicator for having a very fast line in germany is when u ping several well known websites like t-online.de, heise.de and u get everywhere <10ms. perhaps u can find some more provider info from customers on www.onlinekosten.de (check the forum)

I get as low as 90ping from the UK to the official Epic Servers, so I don't see why German players would have much higher to these servers.

I'm in Southern California and I get have played on servers in Germany in the 160 ping range. I'm using FiOS from Verizon, I had to complain that my gaming speeds weren't better than DSL, and spend 4 hours on the phone, but now my speeds are improved quite a bit.

I can get some 130 but my average for US servers is 160.
Tho I can play rather well up to 200 ping but optimal is to stick around 140~160.

I get 230-250 in pubs in US but its normal i guess playing from Greece.
Changin a provider might help with the ping. Its not a matter of bandwidth though.Ask around whats the best provider (regarding ping ) in your area. Put a short n good quality cable between your router n the tel plug. Replace the tel plug if its old with a good quality one.I hope you dont use wireless. If you do change to a cable router if possible.
Most of the above can help a bit. A good provider can help a lot but i dont know how things are in Germany.
Drop by at irc n ask around. many german players there might be able to help more.

If only you could route your own packets, I bet you can get a 50 ping to anywhere.!

Thanks for your answers, guys.
MAshling, what connection type do you have?
Did you also have this ping (90 ms) when there were a lot of players on the server?
(Let's say more than 20.)
P.S. As said: Warfare server :)

Every ISP uses different routing. Oddly my ping to EU servers seems higher than it should be (90-100), yet some US servers are oddly playable (maybe 120 or so ping) - this seems a bit bizarre to me.

You all most likely know this already, but make sure that your PC or other PCs on your LAN aren't using up your bandwidth while you're gaming.

I have all the bandwidth just for me ;)

the amount of speed u get from ur internet provider determains how good ur ping will be.
i haven't played online yet (just bought game yesterday after playing 1yr download version) but usually i get a ping around 5-20. for EU servers and up to 20-30 for USA.
(got a 100MB/sec)
really depends on that speed, and nothing else... ur computer only affects how strong u can run the game (low-mediun-high).

no! i have 2 Mbps (Megabits per second) and my friend have 10 Mbps and he has 10-15 bigger ping than me on same server.

The best ping possible according to the laws of physics as they are generally accepted at the moment is determined by the physical distance to the server and the speed of light.
The round-trip distance between California and the UK is about about 18 000 km -> 60 milliseconds. Current routers add a significant processing delay because they are routing hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of packets per second along with yours, so you would probably experience a ping more like 180 ms.
Your connection speed is not a big factor provided it is fast enough to transmit a whole ping packet in a millisecond or so.
