Whatsup, gr1m here. UT3 just found itself another fan thanks to Steam's free weekend. I gave it a shot, loved it and bought it for $9.99, woot.
Ok, need some help with basic things - I'm a valve game veteran (namely CSS), so UT3 is a bit alien for me
- is it possible to unbind the Tab key from that little chat thing it produces? i would like to bind Tab as show scoreboard just like other valve games
- is it possible to bind the `/~ key for console? i couldnt find that anywhere in options
- is there such a command that switches back and forth between the current weapon and the previous weapon, like "q" in valve games?
I love bunnyhopping, so mwheeldown is bound as my jump key. I set my mouse side button (which is usually my "q" key in valve games) to "Select most powerful weapon. I use the number keys to select weapons, or I go to the most powerful then scroll up to go down the list. Works pretty well
I have to say that i initially thought the hovercraft and vehicle implementation would be poor, but UT has it tackled with the utmost efficiency, i love it
thanks guys

GLAD TO HAVE YA!
-Tab is the console key, there should be an option in your settings for HUD and you can choose to have the option Display scoreboard.
-i don't think that there is a button for previous weapon in UT3
and i hope you have fun playing UT3, I think i might have played with you, it was either on the offical epic greed server or the warfare server,i can't remember.

1) You can bind your keys to whatever you want. Just go to Settings and under Input you will find a "Keys" button. I believe you're referring to the "Chat" bind (I forget if that's chat or something else). To unbind a key just bind it to any key, then bind that key to something else and there you have it.
2) I forget if you can bind it in-game. Go to ...My Documents\My Games\Unreal Tournament 3\UTGame\Config and open the UTInput.ini in a text editor.
Search for "ConsoleKey" and you will find it's set to F10 by default. You can set it to tilde there (I think you actually have to type "tilde" in rather than putting "~". Test it out and one of 'em will work.)
3) Not sure about this one.
Just a couple of FYIs... "Bunnyhopping" is only effective uphill and up stairs. In every other situation it will give you a disadvantage. Most people jump with spacebar because setting your middle wheel to jump will almost certainly jack up your aim. See this video for movement tips: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mscu2eAzzx8
Also, as you get better at the game you will quickly realize that "most powerful" weapon isn't the same as "best weapon for this situation". The best players have every weapon bound to its own key and when I finally broke down and did it it really improved my gameplay because each weapon was only one button away.
Just as an example... My setup:
WASD - Movement
Q - Translocator/Hoverboard
E - Flak Cannon
R - Rocket Launcher
F - Stinger (Minigun)
G - Shock Rifle
Shift - Sniper
C - Impact Hammer
T - Chat
Y - Team Chat
4 - Microphone
Middle Mouse - Use Key
Mouse 4 - Feign Death
Mouse 5 - Titan Transformation Key
It might look complicated but I don't even have to think about it anymore. Give it a week or so and you'll see what I mean.
Having everything at your fingertips is great for many reasons... Instead of scrolling through weapons with your scroll wheel while you're getting owned with the right weapon by a guy who has his keys bound you can swap immediately to the right weapon for that situation and kill him first :P
Also, the default key of Enter for the Use key (Use = key that lets you enter vehicles and turrets, etc.) is horrible. A guy will get to a vehicle 2 seconds before me but I'll still get it because my Use key is middle mouse and the moment I reach it I'm already in it.
Just some thoughts! Welcome to the community and look forward to fragging you :P

Thanks for the quick replies fellas. I think you're right B0T0X, I'm going to have to make some changes in my playing style. In CSS, it was pull out knife/m4, bunnyhop with knife, whip out M4, shoot. UT3 seems a bit deeper from the gameplay side.
What does the tab key do though?
I'll try you guys' suggestions for the unbinding keys. I still don't know what TAB does.
Also, it wont let me play multiplayer until i make an online account. I did make an online account...

THANK YOU... So many people consider UT a run and gun, twitch-only, no-thinking game... A "shoot whatever moves" type of game, which is such an ignorant thing to think!
...and yes. UT is VERY different than CS. None of that shooting through walls crap lol :P. Much more fast-paced.
The other poster was right. Tab is another way to bring up the console (I tested it by pressing tab in instant action and typing "suicide"... just about the only console command I use... and it worked) Another tip: If a guy is ahead of you on the way to your base and you need to beat him to your base you can type suicide in the console and you'll often respawn in your base ;)
I suspect you'll have to find the bind for TAB in your UTinput.ini that I mentioned in my other post.
Not sure what you mean about making an online account, but if you already have a gamespy account you can't use that with UT. It has its own "namespace" which forces you to reregister within UT3. Unfortunately it isn't without its flaws, so B0T0X, the name I've gamed with for years and years, was "taken" a day after the game was released.
...yeah... right... I have yet to see a B0T0X anywhere online.

OK, I got online play working. TAB seems to be a mini console, which it probably is.
Now, I am getting ridiculous FPS slowdowns (drops to 1-2 FPS occasionally, Im guessing its a bug)
I probably wont progress in the game until I get a new PC where i get smooth FPS. this thing is miles more demanding than CSS and TF2 rofl
Thanks for the help again. I joined three servers online, and got owned so bad. it is a humbling experience being a CSS superstar then playing a game where you dont even have time to pick up a gun before you die :)
thanks for all the help
*edit
yup, iv been playing as gr1m for my entire life and an account called gr1m already exists. too bad you cant change your name as you can in CSS/TF2 (you know how your account can have one name but your in-game name can be different). "th3gr1m" is sooo cheesy :p

Yes, it's a very demanding game as far as your system is concerned. I currently have to run it at 800x600 on detail level 1 to get decent FPS. You might have to do similar.
Turning off motion blur and depth of field will also improve your gameplay experience. Make sure vsync is off. It will destroy your FPS.
Furthermore, I make sure that onethread frame lag is disabled (It's in the advanced video options). It makes the game snappier for me... Less lag between when I press fire and when my gun shoots).
You will have to tweak it, but it might run well on your system :P.
I'm currently using an HD3300 with 128MB of RAM and probably getting 40-50FPS, but will upgrade to an HD4850 soon ^_^.
If you need someone to train you I might be able to here in a couple weeks (this week I have no gaming mouse - getting a replacement, and next week I'm on call for the weekend).
