View Full Version : Vista Ultimate, now Cooking CRASHES... (FIXED)

Well, I was waiting for the new patch to finish up work on a few maps I was working on, and I love the new patch, but...
I went ahead and got a copy of Vista Ultimate Edition so I could play UT3 in DX10 and all that, and the game and the editor work wayyyyy better than with just XP, the only problem now is that I cannot cook anything at all....
Everything goes just fine until it gets almost done cooking and tries to save, then Vista tells me that UT3 has stopped responding and despite the fact that I can SEE IT STILL WORKING, there's nothing I can do to keep it from closing UT3 before it actually finishes....
For a mod author, this makes it IMPOSSIBLE to ever actually finish and test anything, so any help would be nice.
EDIT: Add to that, if I try to test anything in the In-Editor game, the game crashes my entire computer to the blue screen of death and will not reboot except in Safe Mode.... but if I close it after loading in safe mode and restart, it's as if nothing ever happened, no logs or anything... getting a little impatient with this crap...

I believe you have to run the program as an Admin in Vista for it to cook maps. Even if you are logged in to the admin user account.
For the second issue, whenever that happens to me, I delete all the shader cache files in my unpublised maps folder, delete the log and also the autosaves folder. Restart the editor and then it works for me. This has always worked whenever the Editor crashes on PIE.
Hope it helps.

Well, I tried a lot of things, including logging in as Admin and assigning Admin rights to other accounts and it's still a no-go... like I changed nothing...
As for the other stuff, I just did a fresh install, so the caches weren't there. I always turn off autosave, so I have none... and I did try deleting them all anyways, but it still does the same thing... ??
I'm not sure about your problem, but just letting you know that I run Vista Ultimate and don't have any problems.. (so in theory you should be able to get it to work, unless it's something unrelated to vista?)
The only thing with my editor is, when I cook a map right at the end it says it has encountered an error - I just close the 'cooking' window, and the editor itself doesn't crash plus the map always works anyway.

Just tried that too and it does not save the cooked map at all, it's simply NOT THERE, though it does take about 5 minutes to actually close and does a whole lot of writing to the drive for seemingly no purpose at all... starting to believe that UT3 is simply flawed, I left this for more complex, harder engines and I have had much less difficulty with them...
As "easy" as the Unreal Engine is supposed to be to use, I'd sacrifice most of that "useability" for a little stability...

Do a full clean install of Vista don't do any upgrade crap that never works well.

It may be the complexity of the map. My first map would not cook at all, I had to release it uncooked, then I learned that 200+ instruction materials were a no-no. check to see if you can cook the same map on XP.

All I can say is that Vista is a complete failure......

I wouldn't say that. I was initially against installing ultimate on my new rig, but after a while of updates and tweaking, its actually running much to my fancy. I'm a late-adopter, though. I'm sure it hasn't always been this stable. but for me, it runs great.

Do you have any content from the Titan pack in your map?

The one vista machine I do have, cannot even build lighting in a map if there is a skylight in them. Vista can be a really big pain...
