Epic Games Announces Latest Winners in the $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest

Phase 2 winners in the $1 million Unreal Tournament 3 mod contest revealed at the 2009 D.I.C.E. Summit

LAS VEGAS – February 18, 2009 – Epic Games, Inc. today announced Phase 2 winners in its $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest. The competition rewards top mods created for Unreal Tournament 3 with cash and hardware prizes in four preliminary phases and a grand final judging. In this portion of the judging alone, a total of $70,000 in cash prizes will be distributed to mod authors who place each category.

“Intel is committed to unleashing developer innovation. The second phase of the $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest has delivered some of the most exciting and innovative Unreal Tournament 3 game mods ever,” said Elliot Garbus, vice president Intel Software and Services Group, general manager Visual Computing Software Division. “This contest is just one of the ways that Intel’s Visual Adrenaline developer program encourages developers and enthusiasts alike to get the most out of PC gameplay.”

The Phase 2 winning mods will be showcased at the 2009 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco at the Intel Lounge.

“Epic’s mod contest has provided benefits for both mod authors and the game industry alike,” said Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games, Inc. “Past winners have gone on to ship commercial games using the Unreal Engine, and several former members of the Unreal mod community have found jobs either with Epic or with companies licensing the Unreal Engine.”

That would be great but I'm guessing that won't happen since they've done the category feedback thing. It would have been a lot more useful if they provided every finalist with individual feedback.

I understand the Epic folks are busy with the Titan pack coming up but I recall that I sent Steve Polge an email a while ago when he stated that we can ask him for feedback on what made a level a finalist etc.

Recently I have also sent a request for feedback on Meditation, looking for both pros and cons, even though it got a good placing still as a level designer constructive feedback is a key element towards future improvements.

I'll keep waiting, I am sure I'll get my responses in time. :)

this is what they did with a sentence when they announced the winners of the first page.. they put it next to the winners name.. not in phase two though

Hey everybody, I was just wondering if anyone heard estimates about when prizes will be distributed to phase 2 winners? I don't mean to be impatient or pushy :-P I heard they are making an effort to be faster than phase 1 and was just wondering if anyone had heard anything.

No email since phase one... good thing I read the forums... because if I didn't how would I know I won???? I'm sure all the mappers look on the forums but imagine if someone didn't... how would they know if epic don't even email them... there could be a winner out there who doesn't even know hes won yet.. (unlikely - but im trying to highlight the importance and professionalism of notifying those who win)

At this stage I dont expect to ever get an email... Im just expecting the $$ to pop in unexpectedly while I wait :)

Just my thoughts, but I think (and hope) things will be done after GDC. Given that GDC is next week I am sure Epic has a lot of things to do for that, including showcasing the winning mods of phase 2 at the intel booth.

I still think it is very cool to have all that work reach a larger audience outside of the mod community by showcasing at GDC.
