View Full Version : Reason why 10 players is the max?

I really love this game despite its many flaws. I haven't played an online multiplayer game this much since Rainbow Six 3 on the Xbox.
Anyways, I was wondering why the maximum amount of players is 10. I guess it's a rhetorical question since adding any more players the game would remain unstable.
I wish the amount of players would be increased to 12 or higher (16) for certain game modes. I would love to play Wingman with 3 guys on each team for a total of 15 players (5 teams). Or atleast being able to join a lobby in wingman with more than 2 people. That way we'll play together even though we would be in seperate teams. I can't play Wingman all the time because I usually play with 3 or 4 of my friends online.
And yes, I realize this is a team based multiplayer game. But this wouldn't change that at all. The game will remain the way it always was but with added players. :)

I think 4 vs 4 is perfect, especially for the size of maps they have. Any higher than 10 players in a match would be crowded. More is not always better.

I assume that it's at 5 people because any larger number than 6 would make it hard to work as a team. I guess they went with 5, just to be safe.

I prefer having fewer players in a game. Once you get beyond 10-12 players, the game becomes nothing more than loosely organized chaos and team work aspect of the game is greatly diminished.

Personally I preferred the gears of war 1 settings with 4 v 4 matches on smaller maps. With 16 players like you propose it just wouldn't be gears to me - although I suppose specific playlists with more players than 5 v 5 would be possible. Not sure why Epic dosn't make more playlists like that to be honest - 4 v 4 on the smaller maps and 6 v 6 on the bigger ones is popular in halo 3. This way, everyone can play the game they want.

You could add more players, but the maps would have to be slightly bigger to compensate.

There is already HUGE HUGE HUGE lag with 10 players. So yah.

A significant portion of the currently existing multiplayer maps appear to work better with 4v4; 5v5 seems too much.
Something about Gears of War's multiplayer is that since the core gameplay is elimination-style with a small number of players, each kill feels more satisfying and has a greater impact on the overall results on the rest of the match.

i used to think the same way i wanted gears to have 8v8 but i actually like smaller games now, everyone works more like a team. but i think it would be cool if they made a new game type for 8v8

the game is max of 10 for balance purposes... 4v4 is perfect 5v5 is just to promote the BIGGER MORE BAD ASS SLOGAN! lol but 4v4 was awesome

4:4 was really intimate... intimate in a social way!
5:5 is also okayish, although i preferred 4:4.
if they do 6:6 or more you would indeed get a different gameplay experience

There is also the lag factor to consider. The more people playing the better chance is that the match will lag. This is why Halos and GOW originally chose 4 v 4. I think one of the main reasons GOW2 is lagging more then GOW1 is because the team sizes have increased. Halo 3 also suffers from this problem. Once they had 8 vs 8 but most of those matches where laggy. Halo 3 changed it to 6 vs 6 but it still sometimes has a problem with laggy matches. They even tried to work around this by limiting the ability to talk to one another without some effort (use dpad). This was because the transmission of sound was eating up the bandwidth and caused the matches to lag.

Gears of War is very rich in animation compared to other FPS X360 games. There is a lot more "going on". It takes bandwidth to display the level of animation you see, hence the low player limit.
A lot of stop that gets pissed on as "lag" is actually due to the amount of animation in this game and some of the tricks Epic usues to cover it up. Think about it, in some like COD, all you can do is run, duck, jump, shoot and do that lame knife move. In GOW, you're using cover, jumping over walls, chainsawing, etc. All of that stuff comes at a price.

you mean those key positions diverting from the animations "where another character is in that moment of time"
can cause some lag because many key moments have to send back and forth to the different connected players?

The laggissue is ...well i find the game unplayable at this moment. im from germany and have to play against hosts from mexico and stuff...Thats so no fun because the host has the advantage over everyone in the game and epic is not inkluding some kind of virtual delay for everyone like we can see it in many rts games.( if the weekest link hast a ping of 200 everyones commands get 200ms delay) In10 player matches the delay or lag is very bad i sometimes cant even kill someone. out of 20 games im once host..and if im host hell yeah i kill everyone. in like 2on2 games its way better.

This is so wrong. Character animations do not cause lag. It does not broadcast the animation to all players, it would simply say "player x has rolled forward" or something similar. How do you explain Halo having massive driveable vehicles ? COD 4 has helicopters flying and air strikes flying down ? That does not cause lag.

I hate it when people ask for more players in this game. They already increased it form 4 V. 4 anyway. This isn't a game that would work well with more people. 8 on 8 would be terribly boring and laggy because half the people wouldn't even see anyone, and you couldn't even turn a corner without getting into another battle. They already ruined the intimacy from Gears 1 in Gears 2, why make it even worse?

5 vs 5 is fine and better than 4 vs 4 gears 1 did not have enough people to kill now you get 5 which is way better anymore or less will be no good!

well maybe he`s right, for instance character A jumps over a cover, that trajectory " the invisible line of travel distance should have a hit detection "at least at 5 points of xyz position?" so it would make sense into sending those keyframes/packets of the characters trajectory back to the opponents that are there in at that moment of time and space.
the more acurate this approach is, the more keyframes/packets are send back with info
about the players movement...??
So it might explain why more characters in a same area will cause lag...?
and for the helicopters there movement isnt curved traced..? there is no spoon...

I don't believe the game can handle 10 players let alone any more. I think the old 4v4 in GoW was far better.

2 reasons - framerate and bandwith.
10 players is probably the maximum amount of players an Xbox 360 can handle in this engine with these graphics/textures/models without framerate drops. The host machine also needs to be able to process other information on top of this I assume.
And the host needs to send and receive all the information for 10 clients, without dedicated servers this is already too much for many peoples connections to be able to host games on.
