Ok I have read this book called Gears of War: Aspho Fields. I was walking out at Best Buy purchasing ( a game I won't mention ) and I saw this Gears of War book and I was thinking you gotta be kidding me. So I decided to get it anyways. After about couple chapters in I decided this is actually tying everything together. This is something all Gears fans should read. After I finished this book I was thinking hey this would be a cool game to make. It would be the COG vs Indies. Now I if you read this book you know it follows two timelines. The first is right after the lightmass bomb so it would be between games 1 and 2. The second timeline is 16 years earlier and 2 years before E-day or something like that. ( correct me if im wrong ). Karen Traviss did a really good job. The first game's story was a little vague but this really helps it out. After you read this book you should go back and replay the first game then the second and it will really help you make since of everything. You also get a better picture of some of the less known characters in the game which is pretty cool. Im gonna end it here because I don't to start spitting out spoilers for those that haven't read it. But if you have any thoughts or comments feel free to add em.

(This is probably in the wrong section of the forums)
I'm currently reading it. I'd seen mixed reviews of the book, but a few chapters in and I'm really enjoying it.
Learning things about Marcus' and Dom's childhood was really interesting, and I can't wait to read the rest of the book.

Yeah sorry about putting it in the wrong section :( I really didn't know where to put it lol Its rather hard to find a section about books in a Video Game Forum.

I did a search on the Internet and it says it is.
Spoilers below!!!
I am also currently reading this book, and so far I'm loving it. I loved learning about the history with Bernie Mataki (she should be in Gears 3 regardless), Carlos and Marcus, and the fact that she taught Dom all he knows. I can't wait to ready the rest.

The was very interesting
SPOILER
It struck me that Dom and Marcus didn't seem like best friends in childhood as it seemed to be more Carlos and Marcus though they did seem to be good friends they even used the word "family".

yeah i know what you mean. After Aspho Fields and the Ceremony I would think Marcus and Dom wouldn't be together because they were in different units. I wonder when did they become even closer together??

i'm about 50 pages from finishing the book and yeah it's amazing.
i love how peopl think Marcus is this macho super dude when he's just a regular human being. the games do a deliberate job of not giving him a personality as to let the player relate to him but if you read the book you find out he's quiet and brooding, kind of apathetic to the war (in the sense that he's not gung ho), he suffers from any child who not necessarily has an abusive relationship with their father but kind of like a non existent one with them and it's hinted several times that he and Anya are interested in each other (more so in the game but Hoffman speaks about their budding relationship in the book).
i play as Marcus and i feel like out of all the characters in Gears i can relate to him the most and after reading the novel, it just solidified that belief.
and Marcus isn't the only one's personality that is revealed, you'll find Cole in tears, Hoffman regretting he put Marcus in the slam, and Dom of course. Baird's the only one that kinda stays the same that he is in the game.
anyway, must read if you're a Marcus fan, gears fan or hell, even a war novel fan.

I read the book and was a little disappointed. Yeah, their were those gears moments in battles...and the aspho point battle was amazing. It gave us (the players) a great amount of background knowedge and did really tie thing up well...
BUT...
it seemed to me like their was too much "filler" and not enough action. It seemed as if pages 75-175 were just talk and boringness which kept dragging on and on and on.
I have no regrets reading it, as it was still a good book.
