Same thing has been happening to me over the past few days. It would be nice if we can be given a small summary of what is actually happening. I have personally never played a game where I am booted out inexplicably as much as I have been in UT3.

To me, it would appear that what is happening is that sessions are not being cleared properly in a DB table somewhere, and every time your game crashes/server crashes there is a session left hanging in the table. Instead of clearing this table out, it is used as a validation mechanism of some sort. And the cycle continues.

Flak what are our chances of Epic setting up a master server and ridding us of Gamespy? Is Epic trying to kill this game so they wont have to support it?

Since the Epic moderators are limited to one reply per thread and also one reply per day, let me answer for Flak.

The answer to you first question is 0%.

The answer to your second question is obviously not, don't be so dramatic. Whatever the reason, Epic decided to go with Gamespy and now Gamespy and UT3 are inextricably intertwined. They will never be separated and there's nothing we can do about it except accept it and deal with the occasional issues. We can only assume that Epic and Gamespy have learned from this fiasco and that no game in the future will ever be 100% dependant on a third party server to be able to even play single player. I'm confident that a log-in system of some kind is now going to be standard practice. Man up and move along.

I happened to be reading an article on website trustworthiness (http://www.useit.com/alertbox/990307.html) earlier, which isn't directly related, but it does have this interesting statistic which quite likely applies to the whole Gamespy issue:

When customers encounter technical difficulties at a previously preferred site, their reactions (according to a study from 1999) are:

* 29% continued loyalty (user tries again later)
* 52% split loyalty (found a different site: future use alternates between the original site and the new site)
* 19% abandon the site forever
In conclusion: reliability is extremely important to retaining users.
