View Full Version : Unbearable mouse "lag" ?

Hey :D

I'm kinda experiencing some kind of mouse lag... I haven't played online yet, but in the SP campaign it's really unplayable sometimes. There are moments where I can stop moving the mouse and it will keep turning, shooting or whatever I was attempting to do. It only seems to happen with the mouse because the keyboard doesn't suffer from that.

Comp Specs:

700W PSU
Intel Pentium 4 3.2Ghz
1,5Gb DDR2 RAM
GeForce 9800GTX+ 512Mb GDDR3
40Gb IDE HD, 18Gb free
Biostar P4M890-M7 TE motherboard
17" LCD 1280x1024@75Hz.
Mouse: Genius PS/2 NetScroll 100
Keyboard: Genius SlimStar 120.

Before, I had played the UT3 demo with an XFX 8600GT 256Mb w/Zallman fansink (factory-overclocked), online and offline without any kind of mouse problems. Not even if I was suffering from "low" FPS, 1280x1024@60Hz on a CRT display and all details maxed out.

Now, the only difference I have from when I had played the UT3 demo is that I have an LCD display now, a better video card and Hardware Physics on. I've tried with the setting in off and nothing. I've also done my homework and looked around the net for .ini settings (turning off mouse acceleration, smoothing, vsync off) and they have not worked as of yet. I've also tried to turn VSYNC On and mouse sensitivity on the maximum, and minimum, and the lag happens too - it doesn't have to be always movement-related, it also hangs when shooting, I can stop clicking and my character will keep shooting for a second or two, it seems like -general- mouse lag.

I'm downloading the latest patch to see if that fixes it... any ideas on what else should I try? I'd record a video if needed...

Thanks in advance! :D

EDIT:

OKay I just installed the patch - yay new options! ... Mouse Sensitivity was set at 20... LOL I could barely move it. I had to raise it to 3000-5000 to get a reasonable mouse speed, yet the same lag happens.

I've also tried with another mouse, a Genius Netscroll + Traveller, but it didn't do a thing. In fact, I dare to say that the mouse lag is even more noticeable now with this new 1.3 patch.

Also, I tried getting online on the same VCTF map that the UT3 beta demo had... and still have the mouse lag issue (which I didn't in the demo).

Any ideas?

it could be many issues really.

OpenAL sometimes strains the system.
I dont know if UT3 even has openGL as a option but if so and you have it selected that could be it (i just remember from the old HL that used to happen)

you could check your mouse drivers.
if it happens on other games. it could be cause the screen res is over that your screen supports (that happens in the old unreal engine mods from 2k4)

did you switch from analouge to didgital (the screen)

Hey, thanks for replying :D

I have tried with OpenAL enabled and disabled. Actually it was disabled in my first tests, and in the UT3 demo.

Selected? I have no idea, I'm running it through the shortcut that the installer makes, I'm sure that's no OpenGL ?

This mouse needs nor has any drivers :P. The package came with the mouse and an USB->PS2 converter, nothing else. Both mouses.

Nope, it doesn't happens with other games. Crysis Warhead doesn't suffer from such lag.

The what? I had no idea the screen could be switched like that. Analog / Digital ?? :/ Uh, it's an LCD connected to my card through a DVI->VGA converter, and there's nothing like that in the options. What're you talking about?

I'm not an expert on mice but, have you tried another mouse to see if anything changes? I have a gaming mouse and have not experienced what you are describing. Maybe your mouse isn't up to snuff.
Relating to drivers, it sounds like you are using default Windows drivers for your mouse. That doesn't mean that you can't install mouse specific drivers. I would try that.

Here is your driver (for XP). http://www.nodevice.com/driver/NetScroll_100/get38816.html

Added; I took a look at your mouse. This seems to be a lower end mouse. Certainly the weaker part of your system. If I were you, I would consider a gaming mouse. They have much more accurate control especially in FPS games like UT3. There are many good ones, personally I use Logitech gaming mice.

Well I tried both with a PS2 netscroll 100 (the one you gave me the drivers for - thanks! :D) and an USB Netscroll+ Traveller, which is suppossed to have a higher DPI or something. Still it's USB and not PS2 so it should be "better" nonetheless.

It certainly is a low-end mouse, but if it were a mouse problem, no other games would have problems. I've played a lot of FPS games on this system by now, those include Quake III Arena, OpenArena, Nexuiz, UT3, UT2004 and Crysis Warhead. None of those suffer from such mouse lag.

Thanks for the tip though, I'll try to get a Logitech mouse whenever I get the chance to upgrade :). What puzzles me too though, is that this mouse lag never happened to me in the UT3 beta demo. I'll try to get it from my backup DVDs again to test.

Well, A better mouse is a good idea but it is not causing your lag if it works fine in other games.
Did the driver help at all?

I have my UT3 mouse settings at:
Mouse Smoothing On.
Mouse Sensitivity at 2500.
(I have a high res mouse).
