View Full Version : A Best CTF "&" best DM map or will there be only one

Please read, I do not want anyone to misunderstand:

the MSU states:
Best CTF Level

Enter during Phases 1, 2, 3
Make an awesome level for the Capture the Flag game type. In this category, you're welcome to use any of the existing content that comes with UT3, or you may create your own. The best levels will combine great gameplay with strong visuals and good performance.

Best Deathmatch Level

Enter during Phases 1, 2, 3
Make a great level for the Deathmatch game type. In this category, you're welcome to use any of the existing content that comes with UT3, or you may create your own. The best levels will combine great gameplay with strong visuals and good performance.

Now before I say anything I think its misleading that these category's are listed this way on the category page, but when you go to submit you will not find a category labeled "best CTF level" like it says above, instead you will find "best CTF or DM level" I think of these strings of words as variables, you cannot change the way you wright it, if you do its diferent, in this case NOT a best CTF and not a best DM level.
I personally think it should had been writen:
Best CTF level, phase 1
Best DM level, phase 1
Best CTF or DM level, phase 2,3
because how can you compeat for the title of "best CTF leve" and come seccond to a DM level ? :confused:
ANYWAY I dont want to flame about how i think thats misleading what i want to know IS:

Now after reading that there will NOT be a seperate prize for each of these two game types, will there at least still be a "best CTF level" like the catagorys page states, because if a DM happens to get the highest score will they list a posible CTF map as seccond place? or will they lable it first place as "best CTF level" and not award a prize for it?

what are other mappers thoughts on this.. am i the only one that thinks its writen in a way that misleads people. I know its silly but initially i thought on the prizes page they were just saving space, but im told that only one map of two types with the highest score will get the prize

I was wondering about this too. I could understand combining categories that aren't expected to get many entries, but why merge the two most popular ones?

yes i agree it is strange and stupid.
and idd it is not goot to mix a dm with ctf totaly diferent gametypes
why not mix the Vctf and ctf
no, why not mix nothing like the first phase.

They shouldn't merge any categories.
That amounts to changing the rules mid-contest, eliminating 5 prize winners from the contest.

Yea...a really lame move...the strengths of CTF and DM are not at all the same, lumping vCTF and CTF together would make more sense, but really they should just keep one ranking of 5 per catagory in each phase where that catagory shows up. Plus it just means each CTF and DM entry has that much less of a chance of winning.

the category page states "BEST CTF LEVEL" in phase 3 and 4 so they have to announce a "best CTF level" at least I hope thats what they will do.. sad that that person wont get a prize if point wise it comes second to DM..

another pont I have is what if a DM and CTF level get equil points in all areas... you would think they would prioritize the CTF level for tecnicly being a more complicated level to design.??

Combining DM & CTF maps in one category is definitely weird and seems kinda unfair to those mappers.
i could almost understand moving to a 'best map' overall category, but having best dm or ctf just seems wrong ...

My guess is that they're trying to encourage people to make maps for different gametypes.

..it's definitely in their best interests to do so.

really isn't surprising to me.

for the record Im not complaining they are merged.. Im saying how upset i am that i was misleed by the catagorys page which writes these catagorys as diferent and seperate catagorys. to explain it brifly. I didnt realise untill someone else told me that there will only be one prize. silly that "best CTF level" catagory can loss to a DM level.. someone reading the catagorys page would not know that.
