Ok, well I got Gears about 6 months ago, I put in in the computer, installed it, ran fine with no issues (i guess i was extremely lucky). My old graphics card wasn't really good enough for playing gears, so i modified the settings. Everything worked fine with modified settings up until one day it decided to reset to default settings. So I changed the settings back to the modified settings (no, the settings where not different from before, I kept a backup file just in case). I opened the game, and it crashes, won't even load the game. I gave up on it for awhile, until yesterday when I got a new graphics card (9800 GTX from my old 8500 GT, big improvement). So I thought to play it, of course it didn't work so i reinstalled it, still got the same problem after reinstalling the game. So I uninstalled it AGAIN and then went and deleted the reg keys (i deleted all GoW related reg keys, if someone thinks I missed something, please tell me). So I tried to install again, everything was going good, but it froze after the decompression stage. So..deleted the game..reinstalled..this next time it worked. However, when I go to open it, the game said I didn't have the disk in! So I uninstalled, reinstalled, now I click on the .exe, crashes. I was irritated, but then I remembered i forgot to patch the game (yes, I patched it all the other times). So I download the patch, but when I open it, i get an error "Old File not found". Even more irritated, I looked and found out i needed to reinstall the game. Did it, now I have the exact same issue from before, can't update the game, when i try to open it via games, it says please insert correct disk. If I start the game off the disk, it crashes. Now I've looked through this forum and I couldn't find anything. Please help me out, Gears is one of my favorite games and I can't even play it. Thank you in advance.:D
EDIT: Ok, now it's installed fine, patched and everything. Now when I try to launch Gears, it shows the splash screen and then a message comes up saying "gears of war has stopped working". I also forgot to mention, I'm running windows vista home 32 bit. I've tried starting it from startup, and the games folder, both don't work and end up with the error. I also made sure I had the correct version of Windows LIVE installed and I know that works because I have another game that uses it. (Shadowrun)
..EDIT 2! I've looked around and I think the major cause of Gears crashing is the settings. For some reason, every time I try to run Gears, my config which I had set for Gears gets changed to something I haven't assigned before. The config that Gears changes it to looks like it would make Gears crash from what I can see. I've looked around the entire Gears folder and found no file which tells gears to change my config to this weird, broken config. So here is the only thing that I can come up with; somewhere in the registry there is a key that saved these weird settings and is causing gears to override my config. Biggest problem is I don't know how to track it down. As stated before, I thought I deleted all registry keys before, so if anyone has a possible solution to as why Gears is overriding my config, please contribute. Thank you.
EDIT 3! I GOT IT TO WORK!! I'm happy and proud of myself :D Ahm, anyways I got this to work by going into my config files and ENABLING DX10, I have no idea or reason why that worked, but it did. I can finally enjoy my $50 after countless attempts of problems. Thank you everyone for at least looking at this post and hopes maybe this can help in future reference. I'll try to contribute the best I can with problems in this forum so other people can not deal with such frustration. Must admit though, I feel like an idiot.
