If you check out the description of the Gears of War: Asphos Fields novel, you'll read the following...
As kids, the three of them were inseparable; as soldiers, they were torn apart. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago fought alongside Dom’s elder brother Carlos at Aspho Fields in the epic battle that changed the course of the Pendulum Wars. There’s a new war to fight now, a war for mankind’s very survival. But while the last human stronghold on Sera braces itself for another onslaught from the Locust Horde, ghosts come back to haunt Marcus and Dom. For Marcus–decorated war hero, convicted traitor–the return of an old comrade threatens to dredge up an agonizing secret he’s sworn to keep.
As the beleaguered Gears of the Coalition of Ordered Governments take a last stand to save mankind from extermination, the harrowing decisions made at Aspho Fields have to be re-lived and made again. Marcus and Dom can take anything the Locust Horde throws at them–but will their friendship survive the truth about Carlos Santiago?
There are numerous things in this passage which lead me to believe Carlos Santiago, Dom's older brother, died saving Marcus or was killed because of Marcus' actions...
Anyone else get that out of this description?
Either way, it's gonna be a great read...

That or something happened and Marcus either had to kill him himself, or it was friendly fire. If you look it says "...but will their friendship survive the truth about Carlos Santiago?"
Dom seems like a pretty rational kind of guy, so I doubt he'd be upset if his brother took a bullet for their best friend, but I have a feeling that things would change if he knew that his best friend killed his brother.

What I don't get is isn't this book before Gears 1? In Gears 1 there friendship and closeness is just fine.

I think that Carlos could not keep himself sane and started to go crazy and almost killed Marcus, so Dom had to help Marcus and ended up killing Carlos by accident.

The novel is supposed to be set years ahead of the game, so that's plenty of time for them to kiss and make up, so to speak. Besides, four years apart can do alot of good for a friendship, surprisingly.

Same I'm buying the novel with friends so we don't have to buy several copies. Because we are only going to read it once, and maybe go back to it.
