If it's anything like the last competition, you're probably in for a very long wait. In the last competition, it took around a year from the end of the competition for winners to recieve prizes.

No, from what I heard is that when everyone from Epic gets back from Austin they will dole out the prizes...

When i won 3rd place in the last MSUC (phase 4 - 3rd place - Assault category), EPIC sent the cheque off straight away. I got it within the week, via your FED-EX post.

The bad news was, because i'm Australian it took 1 month to clear an international cheque, but that's nothing to do with EPIC, they we're very professional in handing out the monetary prizes.

Hopefully it's the same this time around, i've already brought a spanking new 6 X 4 trailer with 1/2 my winnings (phase 1 - 2nd place - best use of Physics).

Did you give all of the following information when you made your submission for phase 1?

quote from email: "If you’re reading this it also means we don’t have enough information for you on file to mail a check."

First name

Last name/surname

Street address 1

Street Address 2

City

State/Province

Zip Code

Country

Phone (just for shipping purposes)

Name of mod(s)

Name of mod team (if applicable)

I think the people who didn't get their email right away didn't have a phone number on record. That was the only bit of info they didn't have on me.

Well I asked both Jeff & Dana via pm's exactly what information they needed to issue a check. Jeff told me to email him the information but never specified WHAT information. Dana told me to email my phone number for shipping purposes (???) and told me the address they had on record for me. It was wrong. I emailed the correct address with phone number & haven't heard anything back. That's where I stand now.
I've yet to receive an actual email from Epic in regards to the MSUC despite having provided two separate email addresses.

Sigh... just be patient ;)

If they haven't emailed you asking for more details then that's probably a good thing. I haven't gotten any communication from them at all, but I'm not worried. In the world of big business, it can often take over a month for a company to make a simple payment .

that's for Americans, but i work in a bank so its cheque for me

Definitions of cheque on the Web:
A cheque (or check - USA) is a negotiable instrument instructing a financial institution to pay a specific amount of a specific currency from a specific demand account held in the maker/depositor's name with that institution. Both the maker and payee may be natural persons or legal entities.

but yeah i was wrong too, i forgot America is different like that

Patience may be a bad thing considering there's a very real possibility the economy may collapse any day now, making the checks worthless.
How are you going to cash a check if the banking system is non existent?

Mail Checks A.S.A.P. please!

There has been absolutely no progress on the prize payouts.
Last weekend a powersurge knocked out my PC as well as my 55" widescreen HDTV. Since I knew I wouldn't have the cash to have them fixed for almost another week, I called Epic to see if by some small chance the checks were on the way. They called me back the next day and told me that they didn't have the paperwork ready to send out yet (something I inquired about a week or so before). I was told that it was taking longer than expected due to the winners being multi-international & because of the Gears 2 launch.
Now I can understand all that, but when I asked if there was anything that could be done to expedite the paperwork, I was told they could fax it to me to speed things along & that they could most likely have it to me the next day. When it didn't show, I was told possibly the next day and so on and so forth & I still don't have the paperwork.
My PC is back up after switching out the power supply but I'm angry with Epic as I would be with anyone who tells me one thing and then doesn't follow through.
I've lost a week to prepare my entries so I have to get back to it but don't hold your breath for the payouts because things are moving as slow as molasses over at Epic & that talk about getting on the payouts as soon as they returned from the conference was a load of bull.

Hi guys, we're sorry it has taken this long to fulfill prizes for Phase 1.

We recently had to say goodbye to WarTourist, who helped run the previous Make Something Unreal Contest as well as this one. He has moved on to pursue other creative dreams, and we really miss him.

Phase 1 has been a manual process as many of the information fields on the submission forms were not populated, and we've had to collect this information piecemeal over the past month. In addition, and this is not meant to absolve us from responsibility, we have been working extremely hard on Gears 2.

We have learned a lot from Phase 1, made changes for the better, and expect Phases 2, 3, 4 and the grand final to go much more smoothly.

That being said, winners will be hearing from us *today and tomorrow* as we'll be sending around the claim forms and requests for tax/banking information. We'll remit payment as soon as we receive your completed paperwork; in fact, we can do wire transfers same day.

I'll post a sticky thread about this, and if you have questions, please PM me.

EDIT: Our accounting department says "same day" means "the same day we verify your information". This translates to: Epic processes payments on Tuesdays, so if we receive your paperwork over the weekend, or on Monday, we'll go through your documents, make sure everything appears to be in order, and transmit payment directly to your bank account on that Tuesday. Sorry for any confusion, I didn't mean to mislead anyone but I also got excited when I heard "same day".

Folks,

I wanted to add my personal apology to this as well. We should have had the claim form ready to go sooner but it's done now and we'll get it out to people right away.

We'll make sure that once we have received the forms back, and verified them, that we get the payments out right away. As Dana said wire transfers can be done very quickly. We've also put steps in place to make sure that future phases are processed more smoothly.

Vice President, Epic Games Inc.

Ah, well that clears things up. Yeah, I just checked, Canada doesn't tax prize earnings :D.

I for one, am not at all upset about the payment delay. Over the past month, the Canadian dollar has fallen sharply against the US dollar. My prize is worth an additional $250 more than it was this time last month .

Speaking of which, where is the PC part of the prize listed on the MSU site? It says who wins how much for each phase, but I don't see PC prizes mentioned.

Speaking of which, where is the PC part of the prize listed on the MSU site? It says who wins how much for each phase, but I don't see PC prizes mentioned.

I had to search around to find that information, but in a press release regarding phase 1 was:

First place winners in the categories for Best Deathmatch Level, Best Capture the Flag Level, Best Vehicle Capture the Flag Level, Best New Game Type, and Best Character/Customization Pack will also receive a high-performance Skulltrail PC featuring dual IntelŽ Core(TM)2 Extreme quad-core processors courtesy of Velocity Micro.
Unfortunately no PC for me in the mutator category. I can hardly complain since the cash prize alone is quite substantial, but I don't know why some of the categories are treated as less important (I think UWindows 2 deserves more simply by being what we've all wanted for such a long time, and it must have taken a huge amount of effort).

I don't know about subsequent phases.

Angel Mapper, here you have the PC prize:

http://www.velocitymicro.com/unrealcontest/

Epic announced that info here in the forums (http://utforums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=618289) :) and also in the winner´s announcement (see below)

AUSTIN, Texas - September 16, 2008 - Epic Games, Inc. today announced at the Austin Game Developers Conference the winners of the first phase in the $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest, a competition that rewards aspiring game developers for making exceptional game modifications (mods) for Unreal Tournament 3. Awards for the first phase of the competition include cash prizes in addition to Velocity Micro PCs loaded with IntelŽ Software Development Products.

In each category, cash prizes of $2,500, $2,000, $1,500, $1,000 and $500 will be awarded for first through fifth place winners, respectively.

"These $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest winners demonstrate the imagination and innovation developers and enthusiasts have achieved on the PC gaming platform," said Jeff Abbate, marketing director, Intel Software and Solutions Group. "Combining Intel developer products, our IntelŽ Core(TM) processor family, and high-performance platforms with the Unreal Engine modding tools provides a wonderful opportunity for aspiring developers, machinima artists, and modders to unleash their creativity."

Added Randy Copeland, president and chief executive officer of Velocity Micro, "Selecting winners was tough because there were so many cool submissions to play, but the winners deserve the accolades for their really unique mods. Velocity Micro is honored to support the winners by awarding them our fastest Raptor PCs to help power their future game development. I can't wait to see what's next."

"On behalf of everyone at Epic Games, I would like to congratulate our Phase 1 winners. We have been blown away by the quality and variety of the mods submitted in the first round," said Mark Rein, vice president, Epic Games. "I'm really looking forward to future phases to see what these amazingly talented mod-makers can do when they have even more experience with the Unreal Engine 3 toolset that comes with UT3. I'd also like to wish special thanks to our sponsors Intel and Velocity Micro for their participation in the judging and prizes and to the 3DBuzz folks for putting together videos that have trained so many up and coming developers how to work with our technology."

EDIT: Arg too late, owned by Mr Evil :D
