So since i started GOW (2weeks ago) I always hosted due to the reason that I had two cousins always wanting to play. So, I basically host every game, and I started to notice that I was really good. I then moved on to ranked, and started to suck like no tomorrow. I then found out about this mystical thing called "Bullet Lag" and I seem to only get it when not hosting. I ask my cousins if they have bullet lag when I'm hosting they say no. So is it my connection..or does everyone get bullet lag. In ranked only maybe?
And yes I know host has an advantage.. I do fairly decent when not hosting.

do your cousins live close to you...if so they wouldnt see that much bullet lag....see it all depends on whos hosting the game in ranked and how far you live from them, what kind of internet they have. gears 1 has crappy programming for multiplayer....we are all hoping the corrected the "host" advantage and bullet lag issues for gears 2.
its called server side hit detection run a few searches on the fourms for bullet lag and and what i just said and you will get your answer.

The host never has bullet lag, hence the "host advantage." If you have a good connection to the host it won't be very noticeable, but if you have a bad connection to the host look out. Waiting half to a full second for your shots to hit is an exercise in frustration. Ranked/player has no effect on bullet lag and if your cousins live close to you they will experience negligible lag. My nephew who lives a few miles away from me hosted games for a while before his xbox got the RROD a few weeks ago and I had very little lag if any at all. The crappy thing is, he got his xbox back but it still didn't work. It wouldn't read any discs so he had to send it right back. They better give him a good one this time.

Lag cannot be removed from any game but it can always be reduced. In Gears 2 they are obviously trying to reduce the amount of lag but if you are going to play against someone that lives on the other side of the world then you are still going to notice a bit of lag.

I guess your connection is flawless then. The host can definetly lag just as much as everyone else sometimes. Sometimes a game will run for 10 matches on different maps and be fine. Then, someone new joins and BAM! Everyone is slowed and the host's shotgun still has problems. Also, sometimes I join a match and my shotgiun downs in one hit (no active) while the host just shot me two or three times at close range. You can't say the host "never lags" or always has the advantage.

gears of war is a game that takes 2 or 3 months of play to actually become decent at it.
after that period of time your progression in your skill of the game starts to increase dramatically, but you can some times reach the plateau of your capable skill. thats why u should always try different techniques and not do the same thing over and over again.
also dont use weapons that you arent good at. If your not good with sniper then just dont pick up the sniper. Some people will never become a good sniper because they just dont have the ability.
to become good at gears you need to practice and do alot of it.

No. If you aren't good with a weapon then you should pick it up. I used to be complete trash with the tourque bow. But as I continued to use it and watch others use it in different ways, I am now pretty good with it.

It's not whether his connection is flawless or not, it's how the game was made. When you're host, all the information from everyone's 360 has to come to yours before it gets displayed in the game, hence why host ALWAYS has the advantage, because his 360 doesn't need to send anything, so there is no wait, or lag, for his information.
And you can't base host advantage off of the host not killing you as fast as you kill someone else. It's called individual skill, host has the advantage, but it doesn't automatically make him a good player.

The host never has bullet lag. If you are joining a match, then it all depends on how close you are to the host. Hope i help:)

I think you should pick up guns that you aren't good at.
It's better than letting the other team get it.
And if you aren't exactly good with it, practice.
Practice goes along way.
For people who are good at that weapon, go pick up another that you aren't so good at.

How is he suppose to practice to get better if he's not allowed to pick up weapons he's not good with?

The host may "lag", but it is not the product of true packet-delivery latency (conventional lag, bullet lag). The host never has bullet lag - the design of the host-client network renders that impossible. Movement lag can sometimes be a product of game-disc reading errors, and as such can occasionally be experienced by the host. When a particularly laggy person joins a room, it is not that the host is lagging, it is that the laggy person is causing everyone except the host to lag. While everything appears normal to the clients, the host has no lag, and thus notices the lag of everyone else, causing problems for the host as the clients "teleport" around his screen.

What about Connection Error? I get those sometimes. (While Hosting)
I get it..but I can still talk to my teammate perfectly fine. I then try to figure what the heck is going on, is it me or someone else?

it happens when the level of ping goes to high; crappy internet.....but more times than not its due to someone quiting the game by shutting off there xbox. they dont quit your game before they do so...and it causes the connection error.
some dsl causes this to occur when the connection drops off.....you see dsl is differant than cable....it all depends on how far you are from the main server...most dsl only will provide you service if you live inside the range allowed to keep tolerances. if you live too far they will not provide you service due to the speed expected for "high" speed internet.
if you are on the outskirts of this range you will have connection problems and slower internet than if you live closer to the main source.
cable is differant in the fact that nodes are placed thoughout the pole lines to boost connections. and around my house they are like every 300 feet along the line.
if you have this during or after a rain storm....its due to water getting into the connections.....and spliters also cause the connection signal to drop considerable.....and well wireless adapters for the xbox are junk...make sure you a directly connected to the router and that all internet activity is limited to the 360 console while playing.
speeds decrease across any line...its basic electrical knowledge. if you live at a house that is 1000 feet from the pole line it will drop considerable compared to the person that lives just beneath the pole....same goes for ethernet cable...you wont notice it...but the longer the cable the more the signal drops off.

Thanks man, you've been a big help to me since the initial question.
So, I'm guessing GEARS isn't a game based on 100% SKILL,unless everyone in the room lives nearby, internet connection is also a part in being a good player. Or..you can use this "lag" to your advantage. No, GEARS takes more than skills, you have to be familiar to your connection and environment. Which room is lagging, and which room isn't. Hence, you my friend have "skill". Unless you aren't good, that is yet to be decided until you answer.

the answer to your question is this...it does take skill to play this game and be good at it off host. Trying to get kills off host can sometimes be very challenging...and sometimes the host can be godlike. But to solve that all you need it either, a boomshot, a torque bow, or a couple of friends teaming up on him. The one on one shotgun battles are to inconsistant to involve skill in my opinion....but the above average player can beat the below average player by jumping around using roady run etc....to avaid being shot..
with the connection problems....it can involve skill....but cannot be truly competative, unless you are playing over a lan connection.
with so many exploits, wallbouncing etc...its hard to answer your question with a honest answer. this game does require skill to a certain degree....you cannot just stand around and shot...but when you get alot of players at the same skill level....the connectin problems can reak havok on the competativeness of the game.
