Taxpayer ID number Required!? do i need one??

How do those who do not live in the US get a TIN (Taxpayer ID number), MSU states.
"Selected Contestant(s) (whether individual, part of a Team, or from a School) must provide Sponsors a Taxpayer Identification Number (“TIN”) prior to the awarding of any prize"

better question what if your just a loof and dont work, or work off the books for that matter and dont file, why is a tax payer id required. If you make under a certain amount a year your not req to file taxes also.

My best guess is rather then trusting your gonna file your earnings / prizes they do it for you prob for some kinda tax break off your tax's. So basicly you win a prize but are forced to pay taxes but not by the government but the sponsors.

but take what i say with a grain of salt, i don't know for sure.

I would assume that a SS# would suffice. Epic is only required to report the winnings, not withhold any. It is up to the winners to file their taxes.
I don't speak for Epic, but that's the way it worked when I won $1000 from a YouTube contest.
