There is 2 play co-op in story mode, and up to 5 play co-op in horde mode, horde mode is where you fight 50 waves of locust with your friends.

I wonder if we'll get 4 player co-op in Gears 3 like we did in Halo 3.

Nah, there's a content issue there. With 4 players the map needs to be designed with enough space, wider corridors etc, making it BAD design when playing solo or co-oping with just 2.
I think they've got the best idea opening up co-op via the HORDE gametype. They're quite right; when co-oping with buddies like that you really just want to kill stuff, not get stuck into the campaign (unless there's cool set pieces).

i think by the time gears 3 ships we may see a diffrent xbox so im sure by the time,
we will have so much more in gears of war 3
and will have a bigger bigger game..
so who knows we might end up seeing 5 player co op or something insane.
but for right now im just focusing on gears 2 and how excited i am to be able to GET IT.

No, thats 2 player coop. Thankfully, there is a 5 player gametype called Horde mode which is basically where you and 4 other friends load up a multiplayer map like Gridlock and fight against wave after wave of campaign bots like Drones, wretches, tickers, boomers, maulers, flamers, reavers, and possibly Brumaks. It's actually the first time I've seen campagin bots in a multiplayer gamemode or map. Pretty awesome. Excellent tradeoff I say.

Gears of War should always be 2 player co-op. Horde mode defiantly makes up for it. Thats the type of game mode you play all night with your friends while filling up on dew. But I want to know, is it possible to 4-player splitscreen on horde mode?

I don't agree with 4 player co-op. But it would be nice to pick your starting character. Like if you could play as Dom and follow the normal campaign. Or even play as Baird, Cole, Tai, or Dizzy when the group splits up. You know so you can see the campaign mode through every characters eyes. This would also pull out achievement possibilities. Because I've always wondered how Baird and Cole found their way into the sewers of that plant. And even more if they talk about Marcus and Dom behind their back. Kinda like how Marcus said something along the lines of...
"Yeah but don't tell Baird that. He's scared ****less as it is."
